He was a Day laborer (1900); butcher - own shop (1910.)7,3,4 He was enumerated on the census in Dallas County, Iowa (1880, 1900); Shelby County, Iowa (1910.) Bayard Transcript - October 18, 1913
D. C. Howell was operated on for an acute attack of appendicitis by Doctors: Deputy, of this place, Stewart, of Mitchell, and Palmer, of Bridgeport. The condition of Mr. Howell only allowed an attempt to remove the pus which had formed, the appendicts (sic) having broken before the operation. The exact result will not be known for a few days but it believed by the physicians that he will recover.
Since the above was written Mr. Howell's condition has become much worse and no hope is entertained for his recovery.
Also in the same newspaper:
Miss Elipha Peters, a trained nurse, from Scottsbluff, was with D. C. Howell during his operation for appendicitis, but had to return to the Bluffs on the afternoon train, as she had an critical case at that place. Her place was taken by a nurse from Denver.

PROMINENT MAN PASSES AWAY
This community was shocked on last Saturday to learn of the death of D. C. Howell which occurred at about four o'clock in the morning. His condition had not given much promise of recovery since his operation for appendicitis which was preformed (sic) Monday by Doctors: Stewart of Mitchell, Palmer of Bridgeport, and Deputy of this place.
Mr. Howell had suffered three attacks prior to the last one, and had permitted the operation only when he had felt it to be the last resort, as he had hoped to wear out the pain as he had done before. The fact that if he had been operated on a week before, that he would have undoubtedly been alive today, makes his death doubly hard, as his splendid constitution would have carried him through.
Mr. Howell was married in Michigan in 1891 to Miss Charlotte Holloway and to this union two sons and one daughter were born, all being present at his demise.
Mr. Howell came to Bayard a few years ago and started a meat market which was burned down a short time later, after which he went into the stock market, working at time-at his trade. Possessing a kindly disposition and a very jovial nature, he was universally liked and his loss is felt by his many friends, but falls most heavily on his wife, two sons and the daughter who loved him as a good husband and father.
All the skilled physicians, a good nurse and the loving care of relatives was done until he passed away. After a short service, conducted by Rev. Chilton at the home, the body was taken to Iowa, Sunday, for burial, accompanied by Mrs. Howell and children. We regret that we have not been able to secure biographical data.
- CARD OF THANKS -
Words cannot express our thanks or appreciation of the many acts of kindness shown us during the illness and after the death of our husband and father.
Mrs. D. C. Howell and children.

DEATH CALLS MRS.
CHARLOTTE HOWELL
AFTER LONG ILLNESS
----
Had Resided in Bayard For
Over Twenty Years. - Was
Buried in Iowa
----
Mrs. Charlotte C. Howell passed away at her home in this city Monday morning, following an illness of some length. Her condition had not been deemed serious during the day by her housekeeper or her daughter, Mrs. Cecile DeVault, who had spent the evening with her. At about 3:30 in the morning her condition became serious and before a physician could reach her bedside she had passed away, at about 4 o'clock.
For the past five years she had been a semi-invalid and while death is at all times sad, the knowledge that she is at rest in a better world will bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
Mrs. Charlotte Halloway (sic) was born in Des Moines, Iowa, May 9, 1872. She was married to Dallas Howell in that city in 1890. The family moved to Bayard about twenty years ago where Mr. Howell engaged in the butcher business which he conducted successfully until 1913 when he passed away following an operation. Mrs. Howell was a member of the Rebekah lodge but for a number of years had taken no active part in the affairs of the order.
She is survived by three children: Mrs. Cecil (sic) DeVault of Bayard. Sam of Gering and Richard of Placerville, Calif.; four grandchildren, a brother William Halloway of Coon Rapids, Ia.; two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Hess of Yale, Ia., and Mrs Bessie Barst of Adel, Iowa.
Short funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday at the Buell funeral home.
The body was shipped to Linden, Iowa, to be placed beside her husband, following funeral services held Wednesday in that city.
The body was accompanied to Linden by Sam Howell, Mrs. DeVault and her son, William.

BASIC FACTS
Samuel Needham Howell was born on 5 March 1895 in Dallas Co., Iowa.1 He died on 15 April 1969, at age 74, in Northridge, Los Angeles Co., California.4 He was buried in Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth, Los Angeles Co., California.4 Samuel Needham Howell had reference number 54. He was a Printer, employed by the Gering Courier for many years. He was enumerated on the census in Dallas County, Iowa (1900); Shelby County, Iowa (1910.) Bayard Transcript - October 5, 1922
Sam Howell, employe of the Scottsbluff Star-Hearald, spent Sunday with his mother and sister in this city.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
Sam Has 27 Years in At Gering Courier
Sam Howell started working for the Gering Courier in 1934 and has been a loyal, hard working employee ever since.
Born in 1895 in Linden, Iowa, Sam started his printing career at the Bayard Transcript in 1914 and has worked for the following newspapers and printing firms: Morrill County News, Bridgeport News-Blade, Scottsbluff Star-Herald, Prompt Printery, Scottsbluff Republican and the Manning (Iowa) Monitor, a German newspaper.
Sam couldn't read or write a word of German, but he could run a Linotype and hand set type for the paper. He said if the printer's devil put the hand set type back in the right case, he could spike a line as fast as the next by knowing the type sequence in the case and by recognizing the characters.
Sam enjoys press work and Linotype operating best of all the various printing jobs, and he has had plenty of press time on the old Washington hand press, Chandler and Price, foot power press, as well as a Lee 2-revolution, Cranston, Kluge, various snappers, Miehle cylinder and vertical, Kelly B, Duplex and Babcock.
Sam likes to tell about how he could pull through a Washington hand press with several sheets of paper over the type while practically all larger men couldn't begin to pull it through. Sam weighs a short 130 pounds and stands about 5 feet.
You can find Sam down at the Courier plant working most anytime of the day or night and Sundays, even though for the past several years he has been his own boss, naming his own time for work.
The courier crew always looks for Sam if they have misplaced anything around the shop or if they need a cut which ran anywhere from yesterday to 20 years ago . . . and Sam will normally come up with it.
Sam still laughs about the first time he saw a Linotype slug and couldn't figure out how in the world corrections could be made.
After years of work with few vacations, Sam was convinced he should do a little traveling and now, each year he flies to California to visit relatives.
Sam has kept his driver's license current even though he hasn't owned a car for over 25 years. He says every spring he gets the bug to buy one.
About the only trouble Sam has caused the plant is his habit of hoarding pay checks for an indefinite period, they cashing them all at once, which irritates the bookeeper.
In summing up the story of a faithful employee who has served The Courier for over 27 years with his endless toil, here is a man who has earned the right to come and go anytime he wishes from the Gering Courier and never needs to back up to accept his paycheck.

honorably discharged at St. Louis in March, 1865.
The services were conducted at the M.E. church in Linden at two o'clock Sunday
afternoon with Rev. J.H. Nightingale delivering an appropriate address, which
was followed by the ritualistic G.A.R. services, conducted by six surviving
comrades who also acted as honorary pall bearers with six sons of veterans as

Legion members, who closed he service a the West Linn cemetery with a military
