DEVAULT, Robert M. Sr., Rev. 1942
Location: Butler village, on Main Street, the second door from Carroll Reece's mother.
Rev. and Mrs. DeVault moved to Butler in 1921 after he attended Carson-Newman College with Carroll Reece. When Butler Baptist Church was seeking a pastor, Mr. Reece suggested that they contact Rev. DeVault, who was then Paster of the French Broad River Church in the Oak Grove Community near Dandridge. He also became the Pastor of two rural churches, Bethel Baptist and Sugar Grove Baptist.
Living so near her, the DeVault children became very fond of Carroll Reece's mother - and she of them. She insisted that they call her "Grandma Reece."
Rev. DeVault and his family lived in a house owned by L. L. Goodwin. Butler Baptist Church had no parsonage, but they paid the $10.00 monthly rent. After Rev. DeVault's death in 1928, Mrs. DeVault paid the rent (which went up to $15.00). Rev. DeVault raised funds to pay the $6,000.00 debt of the Watauga Academy, thus the school was able to continue operating under the Home Mission of the Southern Baptist.

James H. "Jimmy" Gray1,2,3,4,5,6,7
M, #549, b. 9 April 1845, d. 31 March 1942
Parents
BASIC FACTS
James H. "Jimmy" Gray was born on 9 April 1845 in Russell Co., Virginia.8 He was born between 1846 and 1848 in Russell Co., Virginia.1,3,5 He and Virginia A. "Vertie" Boring were married on 1 January 1906.3 He died on 31 March 1942, at age 96, in Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee.1,8 He was buried in Gray Community Cemetery, Gray's Station, Washington Co., Tennessee.9 James H. "Jimmy" Gray had reference number 550. Civil War, Confederate Army, Company A, 22 Virginia Cavalry (Pension Request S16623, W11116.)1,9,10 He was enumerated on the census in Russell County, Virginia (1850 - 1870); Loudoun County, Virginia (1880); Washington County, Tennessee (1910 - 1940.) He was a Farmer (1910 - 1930.)5,3,4 James H. "Jimmy" Gray seems to be a man of many contradictions:
1) Newland DeVault and the recollections of Jimmy's nephew, Jonathan T. Bickley, say that Jimmy entered the Confederate Army at the age of fourteen and was only sixteen years of age when Lee surrendered. Since the words in both accounts are almost identical, I suspect this information came from a common source - possible Jimmy Gray, himself. However, I also think that this statement is probably incorrect. In the 1850 Census James Gray is listed as being five years old, in the 1860 Census he is listed as being fifteen years old, in the 1870 Census he is listed as being twenty-three years old and in the 1880 Census he is listed as being 34 years old. However, by 1900, he had dropped five years and was now listing his birth year as 1850.
2) Jonathan T. Bickley said that Jimmy married late in life and had no children. In fact, Jimmy was first married to Mary Jane Sims, daughter of John D. Sims and Minerva Young Duff. Jimmy and Mary Jane had a daughter, Alice May Gray born in 1878. In the 1880 Census, Mary Jane and daughter Alice are shown living with Mary Jane's parents. Mary Jane says she is married, however, she and daughter Alice are shown with the Sims surname. In the same 1880 Census, Jimmy is living with his uncle and his grandmother. Jimmy says he is single. Mary Jane Sims died in June of 1880, less than a month after the 1880 Census was taken. Alice was raised by her maternal grandmother, Minerva Young (Duff) Sims. In the 1900 and 1910 Census records, Alice is shown living with her grandmother and her granduncle in Lee County, Virginia. In both these census records, Alice is listed as her granduncle's niece. In the 1920 Census, Alice and Minerva are living together in Lee County, Virginia. Alice is now listed as a granddaughter. She is 40 years old and using the Sims surname. Minerva died in 1929 and I have not found Alice in the 1930 Census. In the 1940 Census, Alice is shown living with Jimmy and Vertie in the Kitzmiller Mansion. She is listed as Jimmy's daughter and is using the Gray surname.
3) James H. "Jimmy" Gray purchased the Kitzmiller Mansion in 1896 for $40,000. From that time on it was often referred to as the Gray Mansion. Jimmy died in 1942 and his wife retained dower rights to the property until her death in 1968. In his will, Jimmy Gray said that, after his wife's death, the property would pass to his nephew, Jonathan T. Bickley. However, Jonathan died a few months prior to Vertie, causing the mansion to pass to his heirs. The mansion was razed shortly after Vertie's death.
4) I tracked down Jimmy Gray's parents through a somewhat circuitous route. In an article about the Kitzmiller Mansion, much of the information came from Jimmy's nephew, Jonathan T. Bickley. Knowing that for this to be true, Jonathan's mother must have been a Gray. I looked in the RootsWeb genealogies for a family with a father named Bickley and a mother named Gray. Only one showed up: Thomas Jefferson Bickley married to Margaret Alice Gray. Margaret's parents were listed as Harvey Gray and Nancy Dickerson. Much checking of census records showed that the Grays did have a son named James and the Bickley's had a son named Jonathan.
5) Two questions remain: Was the town of Gray Station really named after James H. Gray as suggested by his nephew? Where did he come up with the $40,000 to purchase the Kitzmiller property?
Note: In 2010 I extracted Jimmy's obituary. It confirms that his father was Harvey Gray and that he had a child prior to his marriage to Vertie Boring.

Charles Smith "Charlie" Irvin1,2,3,4,5,6,7
M, #550, b. 23 March 1871, d. 7 August 1916
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Charles Smith "Charlie" Irvin was born on 23 March 1871 in Fordtown, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.8 He was born in May 1873 in Tennessee.3 He and Virginia A. "Vertie" Boring were married on 6 August 1892 in Washington Co., Tennessee.2 He and Virginia A. "Vertie" Boring were divorced before 1900.3 He died on 7 August 1916, at age 45, in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.5 He was buried in Fordtown Baptist Cemetery, Kingsport, Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Charles Smith "Charlie" Irvin was also known as Charles Smith Irvin.5 He had reference number 551. He was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1880); Washington County, Tennessee (1900); Spartenburg County, South Carolina (1910.) He was a Farmer (1900); tooth extractor (1910.)4,3 In the 1880 Census, Charles and his father, George Washington Irvin, are shown living with George's siblings, Jackson Irvin and Ellen Irvin. George is listed as single, his wife, Martha E. DeVault, having died in 1876 and his marriage to his second wife, Mollie C. Williams would not happen until March of 1881.
After his divorce from Vertie Boring, Charles married Sarah H. Unknown. In the 1910 Census they are shown living in South Carolina. They had a child that died in infancy and another, William Taylor "Taylor" Irvin, born 22 Aug 1910. Taylor Irvin moved to Grand Prairie, Ellis County (later Dallas County), Texas. He is shown there in the 1930 Census and was still living there when his half sister, Ada, passed away in 1988.
OBITUARY - William Taylor Irvin (son of Charles Smith Irvin and Sarah H. (Unknown) Irvin); Fort Worth Star-Telegram; Texas; Friday, June 24, 1994
GRAND PRAIRIE - William Taylor Irvin died Wednesday in Dublin, Texas, after a long illness. He was 83.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Grand Prairie. Burial will be in Southland Cemetery in Grand Prairie.
Bean-Massey-Burge Funeral Home in Grand Prairie is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Irvin was born in Cowpens, S.C., and lived in Grand Prairie for more than 70 years. He was a 50-year member of the Electricians Local 59 in Dallas.
In 1973, Mr. Irvin helped organize the Southland Cemetery Association and served as secretary-treasurer.
Survivors: Son, George Irvin of De Leon; and two grandchildren.
Note: Connecting Charles S. Irvin, husband of Virginia A. "Vertie" Boring to Charles Smith Irvin, son of George Washington Irvin and Martha E. Davault, has been a chore. Here is how I made the connection. Charles married Vertie Boring in August of 1892. They had two children and divorced before 1900. Charles is listed as divorced in the 1900 Census for Washington County, Tennessee. About three years later he married Sarah H. Unknown. Charles and Sarah are shown in the 1910 Census for Spartenburg County, South Carolina. (Their surname is spelled Ervin in the census record.) We know that this is our Charles S. Irvin because Charles and Sarah had a son, born in late 1910 (after the census was taken). This son, William Taylor Irvin, born in South Carolina, moved to Grand Prairie, Texas. He lived there the rest of his life. William Taylor Irving is the half-brother of Ada Virginia "Vertie" (Irvin) Murray. We know this because he is mentioned in Ada's obituary. In the 1900 Census, Charles S. Irvin says he was born in May of 1873 but in the 1910 Census he says he was born in 1871. This is important because Charles Smith Irvin was born in 1871. We don't find any record of Charles S. Irvin after 1910 and this is because Charles Smith Irvin died in 1916. Charles, his father and his step-mother are buried in the Fordtown Baptist Church Cemetery, Fordtown (now Kingsport), Washington County, Tennessee. I suspect that Charles' mother is also buried there but, if so, her marker has not survived.
