PIONEER RURAL LADY MEETS SUDDEN DEATH
Mrs. Edward Kitzmiller Succumbs to Heart Failure, Induced by Shock -- Was highly Esteemed
Mrs. Maude Kitzmiller, wife of Edward Kitzmiller, the pioneer farmer residing two miles north of Pullman at Kitzmiller siding, died suddenly at 5:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from acute dilation of the heart, induced by a near-accident in which Mr. Kitzmiller figured. Accompanied by three of her children, Mrs. Kitzmiller was driving home from Pullman behind the family horse when one of the children dropped a package from the buggy and the horse was stopped while the child went back to recover the parcel. The horse switched one of the lines from Mrs. Kitzmiller's hands and she evidently pulled on the other, starting the animal over a steep embankment. Mrs. Kitzmiller became frightened and jumped from the buggy to the ground, succumbing almost instantly, although no injuries of any nature could be found. Attending physicians ascribe the cause of death to violent shock, caused by impending danger. The buggy remained upright and neither of the little children were injured.
Mrs. Kitzmiller passed her 36th birthday last December. She was a pioneer of Pullman and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Mathews, pioneer farmers of north of this city. Deceased is survived by her husband and four small children, as well as by her parents and three sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mrs. Ed McCracken of Pullman, Mrs. Bert Pickel of Pullman, and Mrs. James Shanks of Walla Walla. The brothers are Hugh Mathews of the Camas prairie district in Idaho and Ted Mathews of Pullman.
Mrs. Kitzmiller enjoyed a wide acquaintance and was held in highest esteem by all. Her sudden taking away is a distinct shock to the entire community and the bereaved husband, children, parents, and brothers and sisters have the heart-felt sympathy of all.
The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Presbyterian church, interment being in the South Side cemetery.
