MARTIN SMITH
Martin Smith, 83, 3201 Bristol Highway, died Monday, Dec 2, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Smith was a St. Louis native and had lived in Johnson City most of his life. He was the son of the late Ward and Martha Allen Martin Smith.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Science hill High School.
He was formerly employed as furniture department manager by Kings Inc. for many years.
Mr. Smith was a member of Central Baptist Church and the William Rigell men's Sunday School Class.
He was a member of the Johnson City Noon Lion's Club, where he received several awards.
Mr. Smith was a World War II Army veteran, having served as a second lieutenant. He served for three years in the China, Burma and India Theater.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise Susong Smith; and several cousins.

The funeral service for Martin Smith, 83, Colonial Hill Retirement Center, who died Monday, will be held Thursday, Dec.5, 2002. at 2 p.m. from the East Chapel of APPALACHIAN FUNERAL HOME with Dr. Ronald Murray and the Rev. Willard Warfield officiating. Burial will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park. Military honors will be accorded by Kingsport VFW Post No. 3382. Active pallbearers, who are requested to meet at the funeral home by 1:45 p.m. Thursday, are George Granger, Harry Harman, Frank Hutchins, Ralph Jones, Jim martin, Dennis Powell, Dave Purner, Elmer Rowland, Bill smith and C.B. Willis. Honorary pallbearers will be the William Rigell Sunday School Class and the Johnson City Noon Lion's Club, Jim Tittle, Richard Moore and Jim Neece. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the William Rigell Sunday School Class, c/o Central Baptist Church, 300 N. WILLIAM KEEFAUVER PASSES AWAY AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS
Funeral Services Will Be held at Residence on Broad St. Tomorrow Afternoon at 2 o'Clock
William Elbert Keefauver, age 56 years, passed away at his home on Broad street at 2:30 o'clock this morning. Though he had been ill during the past week, Mr. Keefauver's death came as a profound shock to his many friends and relatives in this section.
Mr. Keefauver is survived by his consort, who was before her marriage Miss Mellie Harrison, sister of Mayor J. W. Harrison, of Kingsport. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J. W. Martin and one brother, J. C. Keefauver, both of Jonesboro, Tenn. He also leaves a host of near relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Services will be in charge of Rev. E. O. Woodyard and Rev. S. G. Ketron. Interment will take place in the City cemetery.
Active pall bearers will be: Tom C. Warrick, Will S. Pierce, D. A. Pyle, W. W. McDannell, J. C. Cope, George Wexler, Frank B. Purkey and James Dodson.

Mr. Keefauver was born in Washington county, Tenn., Nov. 15, 1870, being a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of that section. He was a man loved by all who knew him. He had been in failing health for a number of years.
Mr. Keefauver was married to Miss Harrison 31 years ago, to which union was born one child, which died in infancy. He had been a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 23 years.

Born near Jonesboro, she spent her life there. Her husband preceded her in death in 1963. Mrs. Cox was a member of harmony Baptist Church for 50 years.
Mrs. Cox is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Vesper Judd of Cook[e]ville, Tenn., Mrs. Dean Commer of Wichita, Kans., Mrs. Albert Sutton of Hendersonville, N.C.; three sons, W. Lawrence Cox of Kingsport, Earl L. Cox of Fall Branch, and Ernest Fred Cox of Fort Worth Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Howard Keys of Jonesboro; three brothers, James Keefauver, Robert Keefauver and Earnest Keefauver all of Jonesboro, and eight grandchildren.
Fall Branch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Keefauver was a Washington County native and had lived there most of his life. He was a son of the late James C. and Florie Bacon Keefauver.
He was a retired hospital administrator and a former employee of Jones Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and Johnson City Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Keefauver was a graduate of Draughon’s Business College, Knoxville.
He was a member and former deacon of Central Church of Christ.
Mr. Keefauver was preceded in death by one daughter, three brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth C. Whitehead Keefauver; one son, Vincent J. Keefauver, Spartanburg, S.C.; one daughter, Ingrid A. Keefauver Roland, Knoxville; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Keefauver was a Maryville native and lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a daughter of the late Charles S. and Pearl Harmon Whitehead.
She was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where she received her bachelor's and master's degree in education.
Mrs. Keefauver was a retired educator, having taught in the Johnson City School System and the Washington County School System, where she was a special education teacher for several years.
She was a member of Central Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was a former Bible teacher through World Bible School teaching courses via international correspondence.
Mrs. Keefauver was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Keefauver; one daughter, Cecile Keefauver Carver; and one brother, Charles Whitehead.
Survivors include one son, Vincent Keefauver, Spartanburg, S.C.; three daughters, Ingrid K. Roland and Adelle Cooter, both of Knoxville, and Linda Joiner, Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Beth Keefauver, Asheville, N.C., Scott Keefauver, Spartanburg, Logan Carver and Julia Carver, both of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Nicholas Roland and Jonathan Roland, both of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

SULPHUR SPRINGS -- Mrs. Florence Ida Wilcox, 52, died unexpectedly Friday at her home here.
She was born and reared in Washington County.
Survivors are her husband, Paul Wilcox; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Delaney, Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Johnny Wilcox, Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Mrs. Jones Cox, Fall Branch, and Mrs. Howard Keys, Gray Station; and three brothers, James and Ernest Keefauver, Jonesboro and Robert Keefauver, Grays Station.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sulphur Springs methodist Church. The Rev. Arthur B. Edwards, the Rev. B. Chastain and the Re, William J. Powell will conduct the service. Burial will be in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Russell Sells, John Sells, Allen Sells, Lawrence Cox, Earl Cox, Gene Keys, Clarence Hale, Roger Hale and John Furguson.
The body will be removed to the home at 2 p.m. Saturday from Fall Branch Funeral Home. It will be taken to the church one hour before the funeral.

Carl R. Keefauver, 35, 320 West Ravine Road, died at the Kennedy Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., Wednesday at 9 p.m. following a four-months illness.
He formerly was an employee of Tennessee Estman Corporation for a number of years working in the spinning department. He was a veteran of World War II having served in North Africa and Italy.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Chassie Hickam Keefauver; one son, Carl W. Keefauver, both of Kingsport; three sisters, Mrs. Howard Keys and Mrs. Paul Wilcox, both of Jonesboro, Tenn., Mrs. Susie Cox of Fall Branch, Tenn.; three brothers, Robert, Ernest, James, all of Jonesboro.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde B. Watkins, pastor, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. W. B. Dail.
Burial will be in the Kingsport Cemetery.
The body will be removed from the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral home to the residence at 4 p.m. Friday.
