Bishop Earl G. Hunt Jr. church ‘giant,’ dies at age 86
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UMNS)—United Methodist Bishop Earl Gladstone Hunt Jr., 86, a leader in the church and in world Methodism, died March 26 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.
Elected to the episcopacy in 1964, he led annual (regional) conferences in the church for 24 years before retiring in 1988.
During his 46-year career, Hunt served at all levels of the United Methodist Church and was active in the World Methodist Council. He also was widely respected as an evangelist, earning the top awards given for outstanding evangelism in the denomination.
“He was a strong, articulate, passionate voice for the spread of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,” said the Rev. H. Eddie Fox, director of world evangelism for the World Methodist Council in Nashville, Tenn. “…When he stood to speak, everyone listened.”
Fox, a fellow Holston Annual Conference native, knew Hunt for almost 50 years. “Whether it was on the world scene (or) whether it was in the Council of Bishops, he was certainly a giant.”
Hunt was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on Sept. 14, 1918, the son of Earl Gladstone and Tommie Mae DeVault Hunt. He earned a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in 1941 and a divinity degree from Candler School of Theology in 1946. He was ordained a deacon in 1944 and an elder the following year.
He began his pastoral ministry at Sardis Methodist Church in Atlanta as a student pastor. Returning to his home conference in 1944, he served churches in Kingsport, Chattanooga and Morristown, Tenn. In 1956, he was elected president of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., where he served for eight years.
He became a bishop at age 46, when the Southeastern Jurisdiction elected him and assigned him to lead the Charlotte (N.C.) Area. During his 12 years there, he appointed the first black pastor to serve as a district superintendent in the Southeastern Jurisdiction and he organized a lay advisory council.
In 1976, Hunt was assigned to the church’s Nashville (Tenn.) Area. There, he began his writing ministry, producing several books on theology and evangelism. At the time of his death, he was working on his last book, An Open Door.
Four years later, Hunt became leader of the Florida Area, where he served until 1988. While in Florida, he led the denomination’s Committee on Our Theological Task. The committee spent nearly eight years perfecting a document addressing the church’s theological task in the world. In 1988, the General Conference adopted the document, which is still contained in the denomination’s Book of Discipline.
Hunt was the keynote speaker for the 1976 World Methodist Conference in Dublin, Ireland. He served 10 years on the council’s executive committee and was awarded the World Methodist Chair of Honor in 1988.
Upon retiring, he moved to Lake Junaluska, N.C. There he served as president of the Foundation for Evangelism, an affiliate ministry of the United Methodist Board of Discipleship. In 2002, the foundation honored him as a Lifetime Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church, a rare honor. Other recognition included the Philip Award, given by the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists.
“Bishop Hunt was larger than life in so many ways,” said Bishop Richard Looney. Looney, president of the Foundation for Evangelism.
Hunt’s arrival at the foundation in 1988 came at a critical time, Looney said. “He brought real strength and credibility in moving the foundation forward. … He gave so much energy, and that helped to renew the foundation’s vitality.”
Hunt gave his energy to numerous other organizations during his career, including the General Council on Ministries and the governing board of the National Council of Churches. He led the United Methodist Bicentennial Planning Committee, the Board of Higher Education and Ministry, and the Council of Bishops, and served as a trustee for 10 colleges and universities.
The bishop is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Kyker Hunt; and son, Dr. Earl Stephen “Steve” Hunt, and daughter-in-law, Edeltraut Hunt, of Bethesda, Md.
Funeral services will be March 30 at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake Junaluska. Principal speakers will be Bishop Ken Carder and James C. Logan. Bishops Looney, Charlene P. Kammerer and J. Lawrence McCleskey will also participate. Looney will lead a committal service later that day in Johnson City.
Memorial gifts may be sent to the Foundation for Evangelism, P.O. Box 985, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745; Given Estates Resident Supplementary Assistance Fund, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803; or Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 947, Emory, VA 24327.

OBITUARY - Johnson City Press, Johnson City, Tennessee; Monday, November 19, 2018

ASHEVILLE, NC - Mary Ann Kyker Hunt, aged 98, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018. A native of Briceville, Tennessee, Mary Ann Kyker Hunt was the oldest daughter of Minnie M. Erwin and Dr. Charles H. Kyker. Her mother, a nurse, and her father, a physician, met and married in Dayton, Ohio. They returned to Tennessee, Dr. Kyker’s home state, and practiced medicine in the coal fields and mines near Knoxville, where Mary Ann was born in 1920 in a mining camp. They shortly moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, where Dr. Kyker established a medical practice and where Mary Ann grew up. She was a childhood friend of her future husband when they lived near each other on Unaka Avenue. Mary Ann attended East Tennessee State University (then East Tennessee State Teacher’s College) and earned a B.S. degree in education in 1942. She married the late Earl G. Hunt, Jr. on June 15, 1943, and moved with him to Atlanta, Georgia when he entered Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Mary Ann taught in elementary schools in Johnson City, Tennessee, Decatur, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee during the future Bishop Hunt’s early ministry. They have one son, Dr. E. Stephen Hunt. Mary Ann was active in the women’s and youth organizations of the Methodist Church; directing the first junior camp for Holston Conference. She also directed community drama and local church plays, participating in Little Theatre and the Church Drama Players. In 1957 she moved with her husband and son to Emory, Virginia when Earl G. Hunt, Jr. was appointed president of Emory & Henry College. Her husband was elected a Bishop at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 1964 at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Mary Ann enjoyed the role of a Bishop’s wife and accompanied Bishop Hunt in successive appointments in the Western North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida Episcopal Areas. Her hobbies, besides travel, included theatre, making samplers, and knitting. Together they made several overseas trips, including the first visit by an American Bishop to the then East Germany to recognize the first Bishop elected by the DDR Conference, Dr. Armin Haertl. When Bishop Hunt retired in 1988 they moved to Lake Junaluska where in 1989 Bishop Hunt accepted the Presidency of the Foundation for Evangelism, serving until 1996. Health issues required Mary Ann and Earl to move to Givens Estates in Asheville, North Carolina, a comprehensive retirement community which ironically Bishop Hunt had helped to found.
Mary Ann Kyker Hunt was predeceased by her three siblings and her husband, and is survived by her son Dr. E. Stephen Hunt and her daughter-in-law Edeltraut Gilgan-Hunt, as well as numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church of Asheville with Reverend Dr. Robert M. Blackburn, Jr. and Bishop Lawrence McCleskey officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City, Tennessee.
The care of Mrs. Hunt has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.

OBITUARY - Johnson City, TN:

MRS. LIDA A. DEVAULT
Funeral services for Mrs. Lida A. Devault, who died yesterday at her home on Unaka avenue, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Earl G. Hunt, 106, Unaka avenue, with the Rev. J. W. Broyles, pastor of the First Methodist church in charge. Interment will be in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.
Pall bearers will be: E. S. DePew, Will DePew, Eugene Barnes, I. F. Miller, G. H. Hart, and Charles Miller.
Mrs. Devault is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Earl Hunt and by one brother, Sam Douglas of Sulphur Springs.
The 1900 Census for Washington County lists Lydia as divorced and living with her father. It is possible that the census record should have said widowed not divorced. It is also possible that they divorced.
Newland says that Thomas died six months before their only child was born. It looks like from his grave stone that he died six months after their child was born.

WILLIAM H. WILLIE R.
NOV. 1, 1897 DEC. 2, 1901
JAN. 31, 1960 MAY 11, 1987.
The following essay was written by Judith Kathryn (Smith) Stewart:

"WILLIE IRENE ROSE AND WILLIAM HENRY
Aunt Willie and Uncle Bill, both very special people in my life and I am sure many others feel the same way for they both touched many lives in a positive way. They lived on a farm in the Sulphur Springs are of East Tennessee very near Douglas Chapel. I remember well, as a child, Mom, Sue (my sister), and I walking from Granny Martins two miles that took us past the chapel. Mon would carry Sue because she was too small to walk nearly that distance. On the way Mom would always point out a certain road and say we were related to the Smith's who lived there but we never went to see them that I remember. Mom told me, when I asked about how we were related, that she wasn't sure. I now know that Seth Smith was the 1st cousin once removed and 1/2 3d cousin once removed of Willie and my Mom. The Smith Mom married was no kin to these Smiths.
Willie's mother was a keefauver and Bill was a Keefauver too so that made them second cousins and well as 1/2 3d cousins. This gets even more tangled later.
They had a store in Sulphur Springs at one time but I don't remember it. Aunt Willie also cooked for the Veterans at the VA in Johnson City for a period of time. Betty Jean, daughter of Hacker, told us that she remembered special things Willie had learned to make at the VA.
Uncle Bill had twinkling eyes. I don't remember him as being very talkative but he was always right there listening to everyone else. My husband is that way also but he tells me it's because he can't get a word in edgeways, which just might be the same reason Uncle Bill mostly listened. We are a very talkative family to say the least. Uncle Bill was a handsome man as you can see in the photos. Tall and lean was he. In his later years he had back trouble and had to put a board under the mattress on his side of the bed. The church was packed at his funeral. The singers were also from a long time Sulphur Springs family and knew Bill very well. As they sang special songs that were his favorites, the tears ran down their faces.
Aunt Willie carried on as best she could. Her daughter, Dolene and her family moved in with her for a period of time until Willie was able to handle being alone again. During this time, Fred and I got married and Dolene and husband, John T. Barnes, gave us a wedding gift of the use of their house in the Conklin Community, where we lived for several months.
Willie was a survivor. Her third child, Bobby Lee died at birth in 1932. Her husband died in 1960 and another son, named Donald, died just 2 years later but she carried on. I never heard her say a bitter word.
Flowers, flowers, flowers all over the place! She and I traded many cuttings over the years. She gave me a start of Lily of the Valley and I planted it beside my front door. It thrived and spread out to make a grand show when it bloomed. Oddly, the year Willie died it did not bloom. I waited on blooms the second year and was not rewarded with blooms. Finally, the third year after she died it bloomed again and has ever since. Make of it, as you will.
Willie's oldest daughter, Mary Florence, inherited her love of flowers. Florence, as she was always called, was born just 2 years after my Mother. My Mother used to say she was an Aunt at a young age and Florence was the one who made her an Aunt at the age of 2. Florence married Opie Woodruff who was the brother to her Aunt Louise's husband, Ollie Woodruff. Now we are getting into a real tangle of just wat is the relationship of children to each other. I rely on the Family Tree Maker to sort this out.
Florence and siblings are the 1st cousins to her Aunt Louise's children, Helen and Ann. She is also the 3d cousin and 1/2 4th cousin to them. To her own children she is mother, 3d cousin once removed and 1/2 4th cousin once removed. To the rest of Willie's neices and nephews she is 1st cousin, 3d cousin and 1/2 4th cousin. How's that for tangled!
Besides flowers, Florence loved crafts. She was an excellent craftsperson. She was featured in the local Herald and Tribune newspaper for her Christmas tree decorated entirely by items made herself. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club where she won many prizes for her work. The gorgeous roses she and son, Dave, grew were also prizewinners. They were both members of the local Rose Society. Since her death, Dave carries on the traditions they established together.
She was very proud of the fact that she helped work on the Vanguard missile. Florence helped me tremendously with this book and gave me many of the pictures you see here.
Willie's son, Jack, was a world traveler, indeed many of his trips were as pilot either on his own plane or for an employer. I remember that he just barely got in under the height requirement for being a pilot. He was in the Air Force and later became a private pilot. He created something of a stir when he flew into Tri-Cities in his own plane. One Sunday he invited all who wanted to come, up to the airport. He then took those that wanted to for a ride. That was the first time I ever flew and I never did get to fly again in a small plane. It was several years before I flew in an airliner to Germany but I was just as thrilled. My cousin, Gail McCracken, was a daredevil too. She kept daring him to do tricks with the plane. He compiled and Gail was slightly green when she got off the plane. Several others took a ride also that day but I can't remember just who.
Every time he came home for a visit we bugged him to death to tell us what all he had been doing since the last time we had seen him. He was excitement personified for us. His stories were listened to raptly and believed as gospel. I have no idea if he glorified his adventures any or not.
Jack loved to play "El Paso" by Marty Robbins as loud as he could. He was an extremely charming pearson.
He married Lea Baker and I remember asking him why he had waited so long to marry. He told me he waited to meet the right person. Lea was the only one he said that kept him coming back. I consider that a high compliment. They never had children but considered their 2 poodles children.
He and I were always close as cousins and when I planned to marry he gave me some tips on relationships. He maintained that absence makes the heart grow fonder and that is the one thing I disagreed on with him.
Jack's main hobby for many years was photography, both still and video. People make jokes about seeing other people's home movies but Jack's videos were thrilling. How else is one to see what a pilot sees as he approaches a landing, not to mention those vistas from an airplane. He and Lea lived in Texas, first in Fort Worth and later in Houston.
The last time I saw him was a few months after I had my leg amputated and I was flat on my back. He and Aunt Willie came when he was in for a visit. I treasure that visit especially because a few months later he was killed in a nasty airplane mishap in Texas. He was preparing to fly a group of oilmen to a meeting when the engine sheared off and killed him and others.
Rowan Company Inc. was the last employer of Jack where he worked as Chief Pilot and Manager of Corporate Aviation as well of Vice Precident of RDC Marine Inc. The Company newspaper, Grapevine, gave Jack a glowing eulogy. [See notes for William Henry "Billy Jack" Keefauver for a transcription of the eulogy.]
My family gave a "History of Airplanes" by Janeway to the Jonesborough Library in his memory. I included the following:

Dedicated to the memory o Jack Keefauver who "Danced the skys" for 40 years.
High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I'v climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun -- split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
And touched the face of God.

This personifies Jack Keefauver.
Lea, Jack's wife, not only stood by him in almost everything he did, but was an accomplished woman in her own right. She was warm, chic, knowledgeable, very attrictive, and tall for a woman. A perfect match for Jack.
Lea worked as a Real Estate Agent and during her dealings met the Columbian Lemus family in the spring of 1986. They had an 18-month-old daughter named Jennifer at the time. Lea and Flor Lemus, mother of Jennifer, became friends. Flor would turn to Lea for help in translating documents. In 1988 Flor was having family problems that Lea and Jack helped her with. Jennifer would greet Lea with "Hello" in English and a very tight friendship began between the families.
Jennifer proved to be a very smart little girl and both Lea and Jack got extremely involved with seeing she had every chance possible. After Jack died, Lea brought Flor and Jennifer to Tennessee for a family reunion and we all got to meet them. Jack's death was extremely hard for Jennifer because she looked on them as Grandparents. Lea carried on her relationship with the Lemus family until her own death. I do not know what became of them since.
The twins, Donald and Dolene, arrived next in Willie's and Bill's life. I mentioned Donald earlier. He was called Don or Donny and I along with others idolized him to a degree. One never saw him without a smile. He never let on if we cousins irritated him as we followed him around like pupies.
Donny caught a squirrel and built a large wire cage in a tree for it. It could climb and cavort as it wished. Don fed it by hand, holding out a hickory or walnut for it to take. Don was the only one who could get this close. Anyone else trying to feed it would get bit. Don also had a German Shepherd dog as a pet that idolized him as well.
Even tho' he smiled all the time he had a serious side. When he was 17 he lied about his age to get into the military. He was sent to England after going through basic training. Less than a year later he died as a result of an injury during a fight. We were all devastated. His body was shipped home for burial escorted by two officers. This took a long time. Aunt Willie told us later that his dog howled all night long when Don died. The casket was sealed with a glass for viewing. When the casket was brought home the dog leaped up on top of the casket and lay down with his head on his paws and mourned. He wouldn't eat for a long time and Willie thought he would die from starvation. He finally decided to eat just in the nick of time. As it happened, I was flat on my back with hepatitis and was told I couldn't go to the funeral. I literally begged the doctor for permission, which he reluctantly gave. I couldn't recognize the Don in the casket. He wasn't smiling. Don's funeral was the first 21-gun salute most of us had ever attended. Seven guns were near the casket and seven were hidden just over the hill. The seven near the casket shot and the ones over the hill would echo back. This was done three times. It still runs cold chills over me when I think about it. As I write about Don tears run down my face 51 years later.
Donald's twin, Dolene, is the only surviving child of Willie and Bill in 2003. Dolene was very athletic in school and played basketball. Dolene and Donald, as twins, had their own looks with Dolene favoring her father more. She was also a lot like Uncle Bill in her ways. Doe, as she was called by some family members, has always grown a large garden and canned and froze large amounts of produce for her family. Gardening and grandchildren take up a lot of her time now a days. She and her husband, John T. Barnes really helped Fred and I out when we got married. They were living with Willie and Bill died and gave us, as a present, the use of their furnished house for several months. Jobs were very hard to come by in those days and free housing was a Godsend. I don't get to see Dolene very often anymore as we live several miles apart and on differently traveled paths."
