Alaska Is More Important Than Ever to U.S. Defense
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPI) In this age of rapidly development missiles and attack techniques, Alaska's role as an advance outpost of continental defense has never been more important.
Release of $30 million in Federal funds to start construction of a ballistic missile early warning station near Nenana in the interior of Alaska highlights the strategic importance of this vast, far northern territory.
In connection with this station, 22 miles of the Alaska railroad is to be relocated away from the base at a cost of $250 million.
Because of the territory's importance in the Nation's global defense picture, Alaska's defense leaders have never made a secret of their strategic mission, which is:
1 - To provide early warning of an air attack.
2 - To intercept and destroy enemy bombers seeking to fly over Alaska on the way toward targets in Canada and the U.S.
3 - To strike immediate counterblows using Strategic Air Comd planes from Alaska bases.
The importance of Alaskan bases for use in this global strategy, as contrasted with North Atlantic Treaty Organization bases, is accentuated by the fact that Alaska is American territory.
Alaska has six major military installations. Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage is the headquarters for the united Alaskan command under Lt. Gen Frank Armstrong. The other large bases are Ladd and Eielson near Fairbanks; Ft. Richardson near Anchorage; Ft. Greely, an artic training post about 90 miles from Fairbanks and a Naval base on Kodiak Island.
In Washington, Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker has said:
"U.S. Army forces stationed in Alaska are separated from Soviet basis by only a few hundred miles.
Proximity of these bases to the American mainland coupled with modern weapons and aircraft in the hands of the Soviets, present a constant threat of attack of only minutes rather than hours of warning. Constant alertness is demanded of the U.S. troops to minimize the results of this ever-present possibility of attack."

1503 JOHN BUNYAN WOLFE (1857 - 1940)
John Bunyan Wolfe was born on October 18, 1857, near Piney Flats, Tennessee. He worked on his farm during formative years. At age 23, influenced by his cabinet-maker grandfather, he decided to go into the furniture business. Starting in an open shed on ghe family farm, the business grew and prospered. The lathe was originally powered by a converted, "horse-powered" molasses mill. The animal was replaced in 1882 by an new six horsepower engine.
A partnership, The Wolfe-Hughes* Manufacturing Company, was formed in 1889, producing quality wooden furniture and made-to-order items ranging from bee frames to coffins. The partnership was eventually reorganized as Wolfe Brothers Furniture Company.
John Bunyan married Lenora Edessa Hughes in 1886. Three children were born to this union: Edward (1887-1890), Samuel Robert (1889-1918) and Mary Winifred (1894-1984).
Always the entrepreneur, John Bunyan became a ioneer in the emerging fields of telephone services and electrical power generation. In 1900, he wanted telephone service for the business. With none readily available, together with his younger brother, William, he created a telephone company. Beginning with eight lines and a switchboard in his home, this venture evolved into the Holston Phone Company with the central office located in Elizabethton. The company was later sold to the Postal Telegraph Company of Bristol, with the provision that Piney Flats residents were not to be charged long distance rates for calls to Bristol.
Not having an available source of electricit required by new furniture-making machinery, John Bunyan built his own steam-driven electric generating facility. As a byproduct to the factory needs, he ran power lines to his and nearby stockholder's homes. As power demands grew, a larger capacity, hydroelectric plant was constructed at an old mill on the Watauga River. By then, everyone along the "light line" begged to be connected. He charged one dollar per month which included free power for a porch light. Thus was born the Piney Flats Electric Light Company, one of the first of its kind in rural America. In 1941, with the advent of TVA, the power company was sold to the Johnson City Power Board.
John Bunyan served as President of the Bluff City Bank and was on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Bristol. An active Mason, he was a member of several Masonic bodies. Affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church South, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Piiney Flats Union Church, donating the oak pews, built at Wolfe Brothers Furniture Company, in the original part of the church.
John Bunyan was always active in community affairs. For over twenty-five years he was a member of the Sullivan County Sunday School Association. In 1931 he was District Vice President of the Tennessee State Sunday School Association. He as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of Mary Hughes Institute. He donated generously with both time and material to Mary Hughes Institute, even personally finishing all the woodwork in the building.
Although continuing to be active after a heart attack in the 1920s, John Bunyan Wolfe succumbed to a fatal heart attack on May 5, 1940.
Of his three children, only Samuel Robert (1889 - 1918**), married, in 1911, to Nannie Elizabeth Wexler (1888-1976). They had three children, Samuel Robert, Jr. (1913-1984), Nelle Elizabeth (1917-) and Hildred Wexler (1918-). Samuel Robert, Jr. married Tommie Jewel Kirby (1912-) in 1937, and they had six daughters, Mary Ann (1938-), Elizabeth Louise (Betty) (1939-), Connie Lenora (1941-), Winifred Kirby (1943-), Hildred Carolyn (1944-1950) and Martha Jean (1948-). Hildred was killed in an auto accident in 1950. Nelle married Creed Nelson Starns (1909-1982), and they had a son John Nelson (1938-). Hildred Wexler never married. Both he and Nelle now reside in Piney Flats.
* The Hughes half of the Wolfe-HughesManufacturing Company was John's cousin, Edward Hughes.
