Edward Blades-Hervey1
M, #13203, b. 30 November 1895, d. 27 July 1966
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Edward Blades-Hervey was born on 30 November 1895 in Pomona, Los Angeles Co., California.2 He and Mary Lauretta Hughes Patterson were married on 16 June 1922 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.1 He died on 27 July 1966, at age 70, in Balboa Beach, Orange Co., California.2 He was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles Co., California.3 Edward Blades-Hervey had reference number 13471. He was adopted in There is no proof that William Rhodes Hervey adopted Edward or his brother Paul. His marriage certificate shows W. R. Hervey as his father. His death certificate shows Edward King Blades as his father and Browing Clark as his mother.2 His Social Security Number was 548-48-1672, issued California, last residence: Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.2,4,5 He was a Lawyer.2 He was educated Los Angeles High School; University of California at Berkeley.2 He was affiliated with Episcopalian.2 He resided in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.5 Arteriosclerotic heart disease and pulmonary emphysemia.2 Edward's father, Edward King Blades, is a descendant of Pierre D'Veau. As far as we know Pierre is not related to Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania. At least one other descendant of Pierre married a descendant of Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania. That was George C. DeVault who married Prudence Davalt.
After Edward's father died, his mother married William Rhodes Hervey. Sometime later Edward Blades and his his brother, Paul Harcort Blades, changed their surname "Hervey. "
Note from his daughter, Patricia (Hervey) Schneider
Edward Blades-Hervey was a delightful, dear man. He was always calm and honest and honorable. He was a good lawyer, protective of his reputation. He loved to fish and play tennis. He took me to the 1932 Olympics, to baseball and football games, to the beach, to concerts and the opera. My mother didn't seem to care much for those. He may have missed having a son. He was polite and respectful of his girls and was interested in real conversation at the dinner table. His friends were many and they were totally loyal.
According to an August 22, 1966 letter from George Hugh Banning, dad was still Edward Blades in 1913 at White's Prepatory School - Berkeley. There seems to have been no adoption by William Rhodes Hervey.
According to the 1900 Census, Los Angeles Co., California, dad and uncle Paul Harcourt were living at the time with Walter Robbins and his family. Dad is shown as being born in September? Robbins is shown as "physician" on that census. Brownie Blades is shown living with her father and is listed as "waitress". Why was this living arrangement like this?
Edward's father Edward King Blades was born in Illinois. He moved to Kansas with his parents about 1864. He graduated from Prinston in 1886 with a degree in law. He moved to Los Angeles County in 1887. Edward King Blades was a member of the Los Angeles Bar Association and a deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County. They family home was at 1243 Ionia Street, Angelino Heights, Los Angeles. Edward was a champion trap shooter. He was killed in a freak hunting accident when his dog caused his shotgun to go off while they were in a boat. They were alone in a duck hunting area of Long Beach. Edward fell out of the boat and was bleeding when he was found. He had lost so much blood by that time that he could not be saved. (See In Memorium Resolution to they Los Angeles County Superior Court by the Los Angeles Bar Association dated January 3, 1898.) Edward's mother, Browning Lescelles (Clark) Blades, called "Mamee" by her grandchildren, was forced to open a restarurant to support the family.
