She was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1900); Washington County, Tennessee (1910); Carter County, Tennessee (1920 - 1940.)¹ Leona's father was John William Norris. Sometimes he went by the name of Isaac and that is the name that appears on Leona's Social Security record.

Leona's parents were never married. They appear to have separated shortly before 1900. In the 1900 Census, Leona is shown living in Sullivan County with her grandmother, her mother and her aunt and her two siblings. All were using the Cretsinger surname.

In the 1910 Census, Leona is listed as a ward living with the family of Charles Pickney and Blanche Hannah (DeVault) Faw. Leona was 16 years old and Harry Faw was 14 years old. Harry and Leona's daughter, Martha Blanche, was born less than a year after the 1910 Census was taken.

It appers that Leona married Benjamin Harrison Bennett in early 1913. They had daughters, Virginia Lee Bennett and Louise Christine Bennett.

Heidi Jo Hunt said that Martha was the daughter of Harry Lee Faw and Sarah Leona "Leona" Norris. Heidi goes on to say Martha knew that Harry Faw was her biological father and this father-daughter link has been corroborated by DNA testing. Cecilia M Rice, Martha's daughter and Heidi's half-sister, also confirmed that she had independent knowledge that Harry Lee Faw was Martha's father.

Martha's mother, Leona, married Benjamin Harrison Bennett shortly after Martha was born. Martha seems to have used the Bennett surname during her lifetime.

Heidi Jo Hunt reported that Martha married Howard Carlyle Rice and they had two daughters, Laura Leona Rice and Cecilia M. Rice. Howard and Martha divorced about 1935 and that is when Martha had a relationship with Emmett Finley Johnson. This relationship resulted in the birth of Peggy Jean Rice. Peggy Jean always thought that Howard Rice was her father. Knowledge of her true father was not learned until after Peggy's death. After the 1940 Census was taken, Howard and Martha remarried and moved to Lexington, Kentucky. That was when Ben Rice was born. Howard and Martha divorced for a second time. Finally, sometime in the 1940s, Martha married Arlie D. Caudill. They remained married until Arlie's death in 1985.

Heidi Jo Hunt reported that Martha placed several of her children in an orphanage for eight years. This must have been about the time that Howard and Martha divorced for the second time.

CAUDILL. Joe Powell has a tree on Ancestry.com. In this tree he says that Howard and Martha had a daughter, Geraldine Rice, born about 1932 in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. I have not been able to confirm this. Geraldine does not appear in the 1940 Census with the rest of Martha's children. It appears that Martha and Emmett had a relationship after Martha's marriage to Harold Rice and before Emmett's marriage to Artha Calhoun. This relationship resulted in the birth of daughter Peggy Jean. This relationship was confirmed by Emmett's brother, Gary Johnson.

Joe Powell has a tree on Ancestry.com. In this tree he says that Howard and Martha had a daughter, Geraldine Rice, born about 1932 in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. I have not been able to confirm this. Geraldine does not appear in the 1940 Census with the rest of Martha's children.

OBITUARY - Artha M. (Calhoun) Johnson, wife of Emmett Finley Johnson

Artha M. Johnson, age 90, of Medina passed away in Western Reserve Masonic Community on Monday, April 27, 2009. She was born in Newland, N.C. on September 4, 1918 to the late Tilman and Melissa Calhoun, and spent much of her life as a homemaker. Artha was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She will be greatly missed as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Emit Johnson in 1998, son, Finley Johnson in 1997; six brothers, Don, Austin, Bill, Jake, Bernie, Henry and sister, Mattie. She is survived by her son, Gary Jr. and his wife Shelva: five grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Barb Johnson and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2009 in the Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel with Pastor, Jeremy Johnson officiating. Burial to follow in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Those who are unable to attend and wish to share a fond memory may do so online at www.reedfuneralhome.com. It appears that Martha and Emmett had a relationship after Martha's marriage to Harold Rice and before Emmett's marriage to Artha Calhoun. This relationship resulted in the birth of daughter Peggy Jean. This relationship was confirmed by Emmett's brother, Gary Johnson.

Sometime before 1940, Louis divorced Mary and married her sister, Carol Lena Tuchek. In the 1940 Census for Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, Louis is now using the name, Louis L. Berry is shown with wife, Carol Berry. They have two children, Eugene Berry and Carol A. Berry. Birth records show that Carol Ann Berry is Carol Lena (Tuchek) Berry's daughter. At this time it is thought that Eugene James Berry is Mary Charlotte Tuchek's son, however, that really depends on when Louis left Mary and married Carol. So far I have not found these records.

Eugene married Susan Jean Unknown before 1966. He and Peggy Jean Rice were separated in April 1966.⁶
