William John "Buddy" Woolf was also known as William F. Woolf.9 He had reference number 10900. His Social Security Number was 411-01-8346, issued Tennessee.4 He resided in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., Tennessee.4 He was a Bookkeeper - packing company (1930); credit manager - oil refining company (1940.)2,3 He was enumerated on the census in Henry County, Alabama (1910, 1920); Hamilton County, Tennessee (1930, 1940.) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE - from Daniel Murdo MacDonald, Jr. to Tracy Lynn DeVault

[Referring to William John Woolf, Sr.'s nicknames.] Yeah, Pepa (to me) or William J. Woolf, was Buddy to a lot of people down in Ala and Ft. Gaines. His business associates called him Willy or Willy J.
As you no doubt know, I have very mixed emotions about him, mainly over Bill [William J. "Bill" Woolf, Jr.].
But I will tell you this, nobody anywhere in your genealogy trees, no individual you have ever researched, knew his job better than W.J. Woolf Sr.
He was the regional sales manager for the entire S.E. United States for the food additives, mainly lard and cooking oil and all that, for Armour and Company. I think he worked for them something like forty years, his entire working life. Armour never laid off a single worker in the Depression. They had to do two significant pay cuts, but they never laid anyone off. I cannot begin to tell you what this meant to a man who had two grammar school aged kids in the Depression. He would kill for Armour. As a kid traveling with him on his visits to plants, I’d have to stop him from covering up Swift products with Armour products on the grocery store shelves. It was like a war to him.
A plus and a minus in his career, simultaneously, was the one meat account Armour insisted he do for the company. This involved semiannual visits to the old guy up near Frankfort Ky., (before that, Corbin) to discuss the contract with him in his living room or on his big front porch. It was Colonel Sanders, when he still owned the business. I met him twice, although “met” is an exaggeration. What that amounted to was my grandfather pointed me out in the front yard next to the Armour car and the old chicken guy barely acknowledged me. I swear to you, he had the white outfit on, with the little black tie strap thing, both times. The second time I had the distinct privilege of watched a weasel or mink or something break into his personal chicken coops to the right of the house.
My grandmother Margaret DeVault Woolf would whisper to me that the main reason Pepa was assigned to the Col Sanders account was that he was the only Armour salesman who could handle the Colonel’s foul mouth. He apparently could not complete an English sentence without gutter profanity.
I would imagine, too, that Pepa’s overwhelming expertise was not lost on the Colonel. I don’t say this with no evidence: I witnessed dozens of encounters all over the Southeast, from Virginia to Mississippi to Kentucky to Florida, where the local managers gathered to get “Uncle Buddy’s” view on a problem or challenge they were facing. They clearly considered him the final word on any issue.
Pepa (my name for him which the younger kids in the family adopted and mangled) could tell a farmer what he was feeding a hog or cow by looking at the animal. He was NEVER wrong. The man knew farming and farm animals and farm products down to his bone marrow. If you were compromising something with the beef you took in, the last thing you wanted was for Willy J to come into your freezers and look at those sides of beef. And that, officially, was not his area of expertise. Nothing got past him.
We would always visit the grave of Man O War after each visit to the Colonel, and then go on to my favorite, Calumet Farms. At Calumet, in about 1957 or 58, I got to pet on the nose the last triple crown winner before Secretariat, Citation. I didn’t even understand what a Triple Crown Winner was at the time.
Pepa/Willy J/ Uncle Buddy worshipped Man O War. All you have to do is figure the overlap between them. Man O War won his 19 of 20 races, losing the one because he got turned around at the start, when Pepa was what, about 18-19. You would have thought Jesus was buried in that oval moated memorial off the road to Lexington. I think they have since moved his remains to the new Thoroughbred Memorial in Lexington, something that really disappoints me. His original gravesite was perfect, beautiful.

Marjorie DeVault Woolf had reference number 10901. Dan MacDonald pointed out that Marjorie's two sons were both juniors and yet neither was the biological son of the father they were named after. In 2019 we (Daniel Murdo MacDonald, Jr. and I) learned via an autosomal DNA test by Ancestry.com that Dan's biological father was Robert Lee Bender, Sr.

Note from Dan MacDonald from an email dated May 17, 2018:
For some of you who don’t know about Skipper Hayes, he was a little 8 year old boy riding his bike to get something for his mother at the store, back on Sept. 6, 1958. My mother hit him with her 54 Chevy, killing him instantly. She never saw him until it was too late, way too late. We will never know whether Skipper ran the stop sign, whether my mother had a totally clear view of the street he was coming down. She told me two days later that she hadn’t seen him until she hit him, which is supported by the news story. She also said he’d come down a driveway behind a hedge, which is definitely not supported by the news story. I have the accident story, but it doesn’t say anything about the condition of the intersection. She was going to the house of the family whose only son, Dub Rice, would eventually become my stepfather. In the past two weeks—for the first time ever—I’ve been in contact with a cousin of Skipper, a nice lady down in Englewood, TN.

EXCERPTS FROM A LETTER FROM HARRY FAW TO NEWLAND DEVAULT DATED JUNE 1956

An interesting story is told of Isaac's marriage by his grandson, Harry Faw, of Johnson City in a letter to Newland DeVault in June 1956.

"The Hannah family lived originally at Roanoke, Va., on a farm where the city is now located. They decided to sell out and move west. The story is told that they were traveling west in a big covered wagon when they came to DeVault's Ford in the late afternoon, where they decided to pitch camp for the night before crossing the river. My great-grandparents, [Valentine & Susan Davault] lived on high ground, back from the Ford near where the large brick house now stands. My great-grandmother, Susan, sent word down to the Hannah wagon for the mother and the two little girls to come up to the house and sleep that night. The next morning my great-grandmother was teasing the little Hannah girls that she would let them marry her two sons, Isaac and Valentine Jr. As it happened the Hannah family located in that neighborhood rather than going west. Afterwards the two sons married the two Hannah sisters."

Harry Faw did not give the date the Hannah family crossed the river at DeVault's Ford; but since the girls were small, it must have been about 1835. The girls would have been then, Mary Elizabeth 8 and Edna 5.

Valentine and Susan Davault died suddenly in 1842 when they contracted typhoid fever from a spring near their home. They did not live to see their sons marry the Hannah girls. Great-grandmother Hannah lived to be almost 97 years old and she did see her two daughters marry the DeVault boys.

Here is another interesting story about Isaac DeVault and several of his slaves as told by Harry Faw in his June 1956 letter.

"During the Civil War, my grandfather [Isaac DeVault] had some former slaves who were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. After the war a couple came back and wanted to live on the farm. The house which they had previously occupied was then occupied by a white family, but he told them that if they would select some trees in the woods, cut them and take them to a saw mill to have a house pattern cut, they could build the house and live there on the farm and work for him. They did this. There lived with them a little girl, Negro, a foster daughter. This little girl grew up to be an old woman and lived in a little house near Johnson City until she recently died. When I was born in 1896, the house built and occupied by the Negroes had been torn down. During their lifetime they had set out some 'rock lilies' around the house and they continued to grow and thrive there. Several years ago I got some of these and have them in my yard where they continue to bloom and keep spreading."

Harry Faw continues, "I have a picture of him [Isaac DeVault], sitting in a chair with one hand on an upright cane. He, in this photo, is a fine looking old gentleman, with perfect composure and serenity. I think the six words on his tombstone throw light on his character -- these words, 'I have fought a good fight'.

In gathering this information for you, since 1952, when you first wrote me, it has been the occasion for me to contact first cousins, whom I have not seen or communicated with for over fifty years, which of course I regret, but hope to make up for opportunities by seeing them soon."

LETTER FROM HARRY FAW TO HAROLD H. DUGGER

JOHNSON CITY, TENN.
JULY 1, 1958

Mr. Harold H. Dugger
Department of History
East Tenn. State College
City

Dear Mr. Dugger:

Please pardon our delay in writing to you about the will which we turned over to you recently.

The will is a certified copy of an original will of my great, great grandfather, Henry DeWald, who died in York County, Pennsylvania about 1817. From the looks and condition of the certified copy which we gave to you it appears that it was certified to about the year the original will was probated. This copy has been in the possession of my ancestors since the time it was certified to.

The name DeWald is the German spelling of the French spelling of the name DeVault. We have been advised by those who have made rather extensive research regarding the DeVault family that Henry DeWald came to this country from the Alsace country, that province between France and Germany which has been fought over and for by those two countries for hundreds of years. When the Province was under the control of Germany we understand they spelled their name “DeWald”, when under the control of France it was spelled “DeVault”. Henry came to this country as DeWald, landing at Philadelphia where the ship list gives the name. He served in the Revolutionary War and when he passed away he was buried in York County, Pennsylvania with his name on his tombstone as Henry DeVault. At the time of his death he owned two farms in East Tennessee, one in Washington County on the Watauga River near Austin Springs and one northwest of that location several miles in Sullivan County. He willed the farm on Watauga River to my great grandfather, Valentine DeWald and to Valentine’s brother, Fredrick. After his death, Valentine was buried in the DeVault cemetery on the farm as Valentine DeWald, although his grandfather had been buried in the name of DeVault. From the time Valentine passed away all the family has been known by the name DeVault. Sometime after Valentine & Fredrick had lived together on the farm, Fredrick sold his interest to Valentine and went to Leesburg, in Washington County, west of Jonesboro, where he built a brick home on the Knoxville-Washington stage line and which was used as a tavern, where he lived until his death and which property and farm is now in the ownership of his descendants. When Valentine DeVault passed away his farm passed to the hands of his son Valentine. Another son, Isaac DeVault, purchased a farm northeasterly and adjoining the original farm, built a large two story brick house and lived there until he passed away, raising a family there, one of whom was my mother, Blanche Hannah DeVault. When she and father married they lived there until 1906 at which time the farm was sold, going out of the DeVault family. It is now owned by Mr. J. M. Masengill of this city.

One sidelight which happened in connection with the DeVault family living at Leesburg during the Civil War is interesting, probably more especially to the members of the family. One day a young cavalryman was riding west along the road in front of the DeVault home, in a gallop, when he stopped suddenly and called from his horse. When a young lady, a daughter of the family, went out to see what was wanted he asked her if he might get some food; it was about noon time. She told him she would be pleased to have him come in and have lunch. He advised her that he was afraid to get off of his horse that he knew of Union troops being in that area. She carried out a tray of food for him and stood and held the tray while he ate. As he was looking down at her, she being attractive and beautiful, he asked her if she was married. When she advised him that she was not married he asked her to wait until the war was over. We are not told what her answer was but after the war was over he returned to see her, courted her and they married and lived together until one of them passed away in old age. He was a Presbyterian minister in Kentucky during their active lives.

My brother, William W. Faw, and I are happy to loan this will to the college indefinitely for such use as you may find it would be in connection with a museum which you may establish or until it appears to be proper and sufficient reason for our retrieving it.

If each sheet of the will could be plasticized or treated in some way that it would not break and be destroyed in handling it, it would make the will most interesting to those who might like to handle and read it.

Assuring you of our pleasure in cooperating in connection with this item and wishing the college well it its effort to establish their museum, we are

Cordially Yours,

Harry Faw

HF/pbb

Note: Although interesting, this letter contains a number of factual errors, notably in the area of the nationality of Henry Dewald, the spelling of his surname on his tombstone, the evolution of the spelling of the Dewald name, the spelling of the surname on Valentine Davault’s tombstone, and the disposition of the Valentine lands after his death.
