A native of Kingsport, she had resided in Piney Flats for a number of years. She was the widow of Sam R. Wolfe, Sr., and was a member of the Piney Flats Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Sam R. Wolfe, Jr., Piney Flats; two daughters, Mrs. Creed Starnes, Piney Flats, and Hildred Wolfe, Aberdeen, S.D.; one brother, Dan B. Wexler, Johnson City; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Hodges, Piney Flats; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Nelle Starnes
PINEY FLATS – Nelle Elizabeth Wolfe Starnes, 86, Colonial Hill Retirement Center, Johnson City, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a native of Piney Flats, where she had lived the majority of her life.
Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Samuel Robert Wolfe Sr. and Bess Wexler Wolfe, and was preceded in death by her husband, Creed N. Starnes in 1982, and her brother, Samuel R. Wolfe Jr.
She received her B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University and her master’s degree from Columbia University. Mrs. Starnes had also completed additional graduate studies. A popular teacher, she taught for 38 years at Mary Hughes High School and at Sullivan East High School. Mrs. Starnes was a member and past president of both the Sullivan County Education Association and Delta
Kappa Gamma. She had participated in various professional and civic organizations through the years, including the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Starnes was a member of Piney Flats United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School and served in various capacities.
Survivors include one son, John N. Starnes and his wife Patsy Houston Starnes, Vinton, Va.; one sister, Hildred Wexler Wolfe, Johnson City; three granddaughters, Shannan L. Starnes, Nashville, Betsy S. Louis, Richmond, and Jennifer S. Scrugham, Knoxville; two great-grandchildren, Sophie Louis and Daniel Scrugham, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mrs. Starnes will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, in the Piney Flats United Methodist Church. Rev. Laura R. Rasor will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday and at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday.
Burial will follow the service in the Shell Cemetery, Piney Flats.

Piney Flats United Methodist Church.

Mr. Wolfe was a member of the Piney Flats United Methodist Church and the M. M. Martin Masonic Lodge, Piney Flats.
He was a retired millwright and an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Tommy Kirby Wolfe; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Hager, Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Betty Muse, Mrs. Connie Landreth, Mrs. Winifred Goebel, and Mrs. Martha Johnson, all of Johnson City; two sisters, Mrs. Nelle Starnes and Miss Hildred, both of Piney Flats; 10 grandchildren; and four nephews.

Creed M. Starnes, 73, Piney Flats, died Friday evening in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.
He was a native of Scott County, Va. and was a son of the late Creed S. and Emily Horton Starnes.
Mr. Starnes had been a resident of Piney Flats since 1940.
He was a retired district maintenance engineer with the Tennessee Highway Department, having retired in 1971.
Mr. Starnes was a member of the Piney Flats United Methodist Church, the M.M. Martin Masonic lodge, and the Sullivan Historical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nelle Wolfe Starnes, of the home; one son, John N. VESTA MILHORN HUGHES
Vesta Milhorn Hughes, age 91 of Kingsport, TN formerly of Piney Flats, TN passed away Thursday (February 11, 2010) at Indian Path Medical Center.
Born on September 23, 1918, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Lena Boyer Milhorn, she has resided in Sullivan County, TN her entire life.
Mrs. Hughes was retired from retail sales and was a Presbyterian.
She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who's greatest joy was being with her family.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Church Hill Health Care for all their kindness and love and to the Nursing Staff at Indian Path Medical Center.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Hiram Hughes in 1974, two brothers, Jesse Milhorn and Sam Milhorn and by two sisters, Leona Hawk and Emma Lou Castle.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Ford and husband Jerry of Kingsport, TN and Cindy Eisenhart and husband Larry of Herndon, VA; five grandchildren, Lisa Davis, Jeri Alber, Jon Ford, Andrew Eisenhart and Kelly Eisenhart; two great-grandsons; Brandon Barnes and Todd Davis; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11a.m.-1p.m. Saturday (February 13, 2010) at East Lawn Funeral Home. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the chapel with the Rev. Robert Burlingham officiating.
Burial will follow in Shell Cemetery, Piney Flats, TN with her great-nephew Hank Hare officiating.

JOHNSON CITY - Norma Lee Cross, age 95,of Johnson City, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 2, 2015 (sic) at Cornerstone Village, Johnson City. A lifetime resident of Piney Flats and Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Colleen Shell Hughes. Mrs. Cross graduated from Mary Hughes High School and Steed College. Mrs. Cross was a longtime member of First Christian Church, where she was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class, she was also a past member of the Johnson City Country Club. She had a gift of hospitality. Anyone that met her was an instant friend. Mrs. Cross cherished and embraced her family and friends. She was an avid golfer, Bridge player and Rummikub player. Mrs. Cross, alongside her late husband, Duane helped with the ground work in establishing the ARC (Association of Retarded Children of Washington County, INC.) in May of 1977. Norma also was instrumental in the establishment of WACARCA, League Home, a residential facility for disabled young women. Along with several of her friends, she spent much time preparing homes for special needs residents. Norma served as Secretary for WACARCA for several years. Alongside other parents in the community, Norma helped establish the first Sunday School Class for special needs children at First Christian Church of Johnson City.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cross is preceded in death by her husband, Duane Cross and a brother, Pete Hughes.
Survivors include, Daughters, Diane Mullins and husband, Phil, Isle of Palms, SC, Pat Blakely and husband Tom, Knoxville, Kay Cross Copp, Johnson City, Martha Cross, Johnson City; 7 grandchildren, Amy Allen and husband Chris, Chuck Bower and wife Christy, Ashley Askew and husband Chad, Katherine McDonald and husband Ben, Mary-Michael Conkin, Martha-Wayne Fleming and husband Brian, Emily Ann Jennings and husband Matt; Thirteen great grandchildren, Claire Allen, Lauren Allen, Harper Jennings, Bailey Conkin, Grant Allen, Zoë Askew, Samuel Bower, Elijah Bower, Grace Askew, Townes Jennings, Hudson McDonald, James McDonald, and Blair Conkin
The funeral service for Mrs. Cross will be conducted at 12:30 P.M. Tuesday, January 5, 2015 in the sanctuary of First Christian Church with Dr. Eugene Wigginton officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11:00 until 12:30 in the Atrium of First Christian Church prior to the service in the sanctuary. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Chris Allen, Chad Askew, Ben McDonald, Matt Jennings, Brian Fleming, Mike Lacy, Phil Torbett, and Chuck Bower. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Cross, Don Ward, Hugh Bellamy, David Sentell, and Ryan McNabb.

Thomas “Pete” Edward Hughes, 68, 357 Main St., Piney Flats, died Tuesday, June 12, 1990, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
He was a native of Piney Flats but had lived in Michigan 25 years before returning to Piney Flats three years ago.
Mr. Hughes was a son of the late Samuel D. and Colleen Shell Hughes.
He was a retired electrician for General Motors Corp.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Norma Hughes Cross, Johnson City; four aunts, Lelia Hughes Taylor and Selma Shell Hendrix, both of Piney Flats, Margaret Hughes Snapp, Ooltewah, and Gladys Hughes Bachman, Bluff City; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Thomas “Pete” Edward Hughes, 68, of 357 Main St., Piney Flats, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Shell Cemetery, Piney Flats, with Dr. Ralph Sims officiating. Pallbearers, who are requested to be at the cemetery at 1:40 p.m. Thursday, will be: Wayne Snodgrass, Fred Campbell, George “Bill” Smith, Osler Cole, Joe Colven, Ward Tipton, and Harry Slate. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience Thursday prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Association of Retarded Citizens of Washington County, 3119 Bristol Highway, Suite 302, Johnson City, TN 37601.
