CROSS, EDWARD DALLAS PINEY FLATS, TN -- Edward D. Cross died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Greystone Health Care in Blountville. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was past president of the Vocational Agriculture Club. He taught school for several years in the Sullivan County School System and served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a 4-H Club leader and past president of the Piney Flats Ruritan Club. He served on the executive board of UETHD and served 72,000 hours of volunteer service at the Fort Howard Veterans Hospital in Baltimore. He was a president of the Piney Flats Senior Citizens for many years and retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1972. He was a member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. In accordance with Mr. Cross' wishes, there will be no service. Friends may call any time Sunday at the home of his niece, Bettie Jo Cassell, 200 Fair Acres Drive, Bristol, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Poplar Ridge Christian Church, 206 Poplar Ridge Christian Church Road, Piney Flats, TN 37686. Frances Hickman - KINGSPORT
KINGSPORT ? Frances Webb Hickman, Kingsport died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday March 3, 2007 at Netherland Health Care.
Born in Piney Flats, she had lived in Kingsport more than fifty years. Mrs. Hickman was employed with First Tennessee Bank for a number of years. She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Frances will be remembered for her loving smile and warm heart.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Webb, and second husband, Lee Hickman; her parents, George and Myrtle Cross; and one brother, Billy Cross.
Surviving are her daughter, Cyndee Rees, of the Harmony Community; her son, Tony Webb and wife, Pam, of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Terence Webb, Trever and Laura Rees; and one brother, Bob Cross and wife, Anne, of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be in the funeral home chapel at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.

Couple Wed In Ceremony At Bluff City
Bluff City, Tenn. -- Miss Clara Frances Cross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Cross of Piney Flats, became the bride of William Harold Webb, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Webb of Bluff City, Saturday evening at 8 o'clock in the Bluff City methodist Church.
After a wedding trip to Canada, the couple will be at home at 102 Lee Street, Kingsport. Mrs. Webb now is employed in the accounting department of Tennessee Eastman. The bridegroom is also employed in this city since his recent discharge from the Navy. He was in the service for more than three years.
The candlelight ceremony was performed by Rev. L. R. Hankins.
Miss Teeny Mottern of Bristol was the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids were Miss Margaret Nellie Webb, a sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. James Thomas, both of Bluff City. They wore pastel shaded net gowns.
William Charles Fleenor, Jr. was the best man, and the ushers were Robert Cross, brother of the bride, Jack and Junior Webb, brothers of the bridegroom, and Jack Mottern.
The nuptial music was presented by Mr. Hazelle Bailey and Tom Beatty of Kingsport.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white satin and net wedding gown and carried a bouquet of rosebuds, centered with a white orchid. Her veil was fingertip length.
A wedding reception followed in the home of the bride's parents.

He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church; a Mason; a member of Colonial Heights Aerie No. 327, Eagles; a member of Moose Lodge #972; member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3302, and Hammond Post #3, American Legion. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Frances C. Webb; daughter, Cindy; son, Tony; his mother, Mrs. Lester B. Webb, Sr., Bluff City; sister, Miss Margaret Nell Webb, Bluff City; and brothers, Lester B. Jr., Bluff City, and Edward J. (Jack) Webb, Bristol.

Funeral services for William H. Webb, 49, 2324 Woodridge Ave., will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. at First Broad Street Methodist Church with Dr. Thomas F. Chilcote, Rev. J Ray Stuart and Rev. William _. Hickle officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The body will remain at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home until one hour before the services, when it will be taken to the church. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Ray W. Dinham, Joe O. Gass, Robert F. Lee, John S. ____ Jr., G. P. Smith, Henry Stone Jr., C. A. Couple Wed In Ceremony At Bluff City
Bluff City, Tenn. -- Miss Clara Frances Cross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Cross of Piney Flats, became the bride of William Harold Webb, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Webb of Bluff City, Saturday evening at 8 o'clock in the Bluff City methodist Church.
After a wedding trip to Canada, the couple will be at home at 102 Lee Street, Kingsport. Mrs. Webb now is employed in the accounting department of Tennessee Eastman. The bridegroom is also employed in this city since his recent discharge from the Navy. He was in the service for more than three years.
The candlelight ceremony was performed by Rev. L. R. Hankins.
Miss Teeny Mottern of Bristol was the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids were Miss Margaret Nellie Webb, a sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. James Thomas, both of Bluff City. They wore pastel shaded net gowns.
William Charles Fleenor, Jr. was the best man, and the ushers were Robert Cross, brother of the bride, Jack and Junior Webb, brothers of the bridegroom, and Jack Mottern.
The nuptial music was presented by Mr. Hazelle Bailey and Tom Beatty of Kingsport.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white satin and net wedding gown and carried a bouquet of rosebuds, centered with a white orchid. Her veil was fingertip length.
A wedding reception followed in the home of the bride's parents.

KINGSPORT – Lee D. Hickman, 77, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2004.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1949, and was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company, after 36 years of service. Mr. Hickman was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the VFW. He was an avid golfer. His mother and father, Lee and Viola Hickman, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Hickman of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Cyndee and Carlyle Rees, Harmony community; one son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Pam Webb, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Terence Webb, Trever Rees and Laura Rees; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Sandra Hickman, Piney Flats, and Herschel and Joyce Hickman, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; one niece, Susan Paris and husband, Sam, Franklin, Tenn.; and two great-nieces, Annie and Lily Paris.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel, with The Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post 3382 of the VFW.

M. C. “Tip” Smith has a career in coaching and directing high school or college athletics in East Tennessee that spans forty years. He began his career at Charleston High School after graduating from Carson-Newman College in 1931. In 1939 he moved to Bradley Central High School, where his teams won state championships in basketball during 1940 and 1942. During World War II, Smith served on the staff of the military physical training program at the University of Tennessee. He resumed coaching basketball in 1946 at Tennessee Military Institute and returned to Bradley Central High in 1949. During the subsequent seven years, he took teams to the state tournament four successive seasons. Moving on to the collegiate ranks, Smith became basketball coach at Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1955 and served as athletic director until retiring in 1973. At that time, he was awarded an honorary doctor of education by the college. Smith finished off his illustrious career as Acting Dean of Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1974. During his distinguished coaching career, Smith won eight district and seven regional tournaments and participated in eight state tournaments, winning twice. Quite an impressive record from a very impressive individual, “Tip” Smith.
Clifton and Frances met at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City.

JOHNSON CITY -- Olin DeVault Cross, 46, Piney Flats, died early today in Memorial Hospital here.
A life-long resident of Sullivan County, he was a member of Poplar Ridge Christion Church.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rice H. Cross Sr., Piney Flats; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Torbett, Johnson City, Mrs. Marjory Ralph, Tullahoma. and Mrs. Martha Lacy, Johnson City; four brothers, Kyle Cross, Jonesboro, Duane Cross, Johnson City, Rice H. Cross Jr., Lawrenceburg, Ind., and William H. Cross, Piney Flats.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Morris Funeral Home.

The wedding is planned for Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m., at the Poplar Ridge Christian Church, Piney Flats. WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT

Poplar Ridge Christian Church, Piney Flats, Tennessee, was the setting on Saturday, July 26 at 11 o'clock in the morning for the wedding of Miss Marjorie Kathleen Cross, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rice Hicks Cross, Sr. of Piney Flats to Mr. John Roger Ralph of Tullahoma and Goodlettsville, Tennessee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Ralph of Goodlettsville.
The Rev. Edward Hayes, church pastor, was the officiating minister for the single ring ceremony.
Vows were exchanged before a background of English ivy and magnolias. Tall wicker baskets of white gladioli were placed at either side of the altar.

was give by Miss Brown, pianist of Piney Flats, Mrs. Joe Hardwick, violinist, of Bristol and Mrs. Joe Sutherland, soloist, of Johnson City. Preceding the ceremony Miss Brown and Mrs. Hardwick presented "Poems" - Fibich, "Calm as the Night" - Bohm and "The Rosary" - Nevin. Mr. Sutherland's selections were "Because" D'Hardelot and "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life." During the ceremony Miss Brown and Mrs. Hardwick softly played "Ave Maria" - Shubert-Wilhelmj. The traditional wedding marches were used.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose for her wedding a white ballerina-length gown of marquisette over white .....

Duane Cross, age 92, of Johnson City, died Friday, January 13, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Sullivan and Washington County, he was a son of the late Rice H. Cross and Nancy Mottern Cross, of Piney Flats. Mr. Cross was born in Sullivan County and graduated from Mary Hughes High School and received a B.S degree from Milligan College.
He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater of operations in the Quarter Master Co. of the 24th Division.
Mr. Cross was a member of the Optimist Club and also of the Johnson City Country Club. He was a member of A.R.C. (Association of Retarded Citizens), and the Washington County Community Service. He was one of the founders of A.R.C. in 1961, and the Dawn of Hope. Mr. Cross served on the Board for a number of years for CORE-Residential Services.
He was a member of First Christian Church since 1959, Johnson City, and the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class. He served on several committees at First Christian Church.
Mr. Cross was President and CEO of Cross-Lacy Oil Company which served the Tri-Cities area for over 35 years. Duane was a great farmer and continued to grow beautiful tomatoes that were supplied by God’s beautiful rain and sunshine. Duane loved to play golf and spend time with his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cross in preceded in death by brothers, Olin Cross, R.H. Cross and Kyle Cross; sisters, Marjorie Cross Ralph, Dorothy Cross Torbett, Martha Cross Lacy.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma Hughes Cross, Johnson City; Daughters, Diane Mullins and husband, Phil, Isle of Palms, SC, Pat Blakely and husband, Tom, Knoxville, Kay Cross Copp, Johnson City, Martha Cross, Johnson City; 7 grandchildren, Amy Allen and husband, Chris, Chuck Bower and wife, Christy, Ashley Askew and husband, Chad, Katherine McDonald and husband, Ben, Mary-Michael Conkin and husband, Mark, Martha-Wayne Fleming and husband, Brian, Emily Ann Jennings and husband, Matt; Twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Bill Cross and wife, Myrtle, Piney Flats.
The funeral service for Mr. Cross will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Monday, January 16, 2012, with Dr. Bill Gwaltney, Mr. Chuck Bower and Dr. Tim Wallingford, Minister, officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. in the Atrium of First Christian Church prior to the service in the sanctuary.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 17, from the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Boone Dam V.F.W and members of the Army National Guard. Active pallbearers will be Chris Allen, Chad Askew, Mark Conkin, Dan Cross, Brian Fleming, Mike Lacy, Ben McDonald and Phil Torbett. Honorary pallbearers will be, Charlie McCoy, Reno Burleson, Dr. Gil Rannick, Hugh Bellamy, Frank Meroney, Harvey Carrier, Don McKelmont, and Don Ward. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Appalachian Funeral Home at 9:30 A.M. Tuesday to travel in procession to the cemetery.
