J. T. and B. F. Masengill, proprietors of Masengill's livery and feed stable and dealers in live stock and grain, are the sons of F. D. and Deborah (Webb) Masengill, the former born in this county April 30, 1815, and one of its oldest residents. The grandparents were Henry and Elizabeth (Emmert) Masengill, the former a native of South Carolina, and a pioneer of East Tennessee. He was a soldier of the Revolution and a distinguished Indian fighter. His first wife was a daughter of William Cobb, a pioneer of this State, and the marriage was among the first in this State, and occurred in the old Wommach fort. The Masengill farm was the one on which Gov. Blount called a meeting to organize the territory of Tennessee, and the farm was owned by Henry and his father-in-law. Henry's second wife was a daughter of Jacob Emmert. Their children, are F. D., John and Joseph. F. D. received the usual country advantages, and besides farming, boated down the Tennessee and Holston Rivers, but is now engaged as a farmer in the Sixteenth District. About 1856 he represented his county in the Legislature, and has been a prominent Democrat more or less all his life. His first wife, Deborah, to whom he was married May 17, 1836, was a daughter of Nathan Webb, of the distinguished family of Revolutionary times. She was born March 19, 1811, in this county, and died March 24, 1874. December 16, 1875, he married Martha, a daughter of E. T. Mauk, who was born May 1, 1844, in this county. By his first marriage he had seven sons and one daughter, and by the second one son and two daughters. J. T. was born July 23, 1849, in this county, and was educated at King's College, Bristol. In 1872 he married Mary A., the daughter of George P. Faw, of Washington County. They have two sons and two daughters. B. F. was born in this county August 11, 1854, and was educated at the Bluff City High School, and at King's College. In 1874 he married Fannie, a daughter of J. B. Worley, and has three sons and two daughters.

William Dean Howell
Established in 1828, the Howell Farm is two miles west of Morristown. William Howell, who cultivated about 112 acres, was the farm’s first owner. In 1859, he deeded 50 acres to his son William Alexander Howell, who obtained 175 acres three years later. William A. Howell and his wife Seletha Bettis were the parents of two boys, William E. and John L. Howell.
In 1878, William E. Howell inherited 175 acres of the family land. By building and operating a modern dairy, William increased the farm’s profits. A member of the Masonic order, Howell also served as a city alderman in 1907.
Glenn Alexander Howell, the only son of William and Kitty Gill Howell, acquired the farm in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression. Despite the hard times, Glenn and his wife Annie Mae kept the farm in operation and in 1963, it passed to their son William Dean Howell. As of 1976, William and his wife, together with their son and his family, lived on a 595 acre farm. The Howells specialized in livestock, raising dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine and horses.

OBITUARY

Mary Ruth Howell Corbett was born August 27, 1919 to Glenn Howell and Anna Mae Masengill Howell in Morristown, Tennessee. She was raised on a dairy farm and graduated from Morristown High School in 1936 and was Valedictorian of her class. She attended Carson-Newman College, transferring to the University of Tennessee, and graduating in 1940. She married L. Harold Corbett on October 11, 1941. They were blessed with two daughters Florence Deanna, 1945 and Carol Ruth, 1949. Mary Ruth’s pride and joy of her life has been her family. Her grandchildren are Mary, Ben, Amy, Carrie, Christie, Casey, and Cady Ruth. They all lovingly call her “Nano.” She lived in St. Petersburg, Florida most of her married life and moved to Orlando in 2008.
At First Presbyterian Church in St Petersburg, she held more positions than the ministers. She was president of Presbyterian Women and Highlander Sunday School Class, coordinated the church nursery and Vacation Bible School, Superintendent of the Sunday School, was a Ruling Elder, and held several offices in the Presbytery. (Believe it or not, she started out as a Methodist, a source of playful family fun over the years!) Additionally, she was an avid supporter of her husband’s active participation in Barbershop Quartet and Exchange Club, and of his position as a teacher for the Highlander Sunday School Class for twenty-nine years. Leadership positions in the community included Presidency of PEO, Mothers Christian Study Club, DAR, and PTA. She and Harold were Tour Hosts on 15 tours abroad. If you wanted something done, ask Mary Ruth Corbett. In her “spare time,” she played bridge, was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting and knitting. Her grandchildren still treasure the Christmas stockings she made for each of them as young children.
Harold, her loving husband of 60 years, died in 2001. In addition to her husband and parents, her brother William Dean Howell and niece Glenda Sue Jellicorse preceded her. She is survived by her daughters Florence Guidinger and Carol Fisher, son-in-law Larry Fisher, niece Mary Lynn Morell, nephew, Bill Howell, seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and “outlaws,” and more “greats,” plus many special friends have surrounded her with love these 92 years.
Sincere appreciation is extended to the staffs of Windsor Place, Orlando Lutheran Towers, and Cornerstone Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of our beloved Nano.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to First Presbyterian Church, 701 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701, or the Park Lake Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 309 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL, 32801.
A service in celebration of her life is planned for 3:00 PM, Sunday, May 27th at Park Lake Presbyterian Church, Orlando. Interment will be this summer in Morristown, Tennessee.
