Nellie Elouise Broyles, 74, of the Chuckey community, died Saturday evening at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Broyles was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Horse Creek Mission Church.
Her family stated, "She was a gentle, quiet, loving person with a sweet smile and beautiful laugh that warmed a room. She loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, her church, family and friends. She enjoyed going places, especially the lake with her youngest daughter and her spouse, Kathy and Johnny Tarlton, with whom she resided. She loved animals and had two special pets, Smokey Joe and Flossie."
Survivors include three daughters and their spouses: Brenda and Eric Hyder of Limestone, Joyce and Dennis Lamb of Chuckey, and her "beloved baby daughter and her spouse who also were her caregivers," Kathy and Johnny Tarlton of Chuckey; one sister: Louise Davis of Chuckey; three grandchildren: Hannah Lamb and Logan Lamb, both of Chuckey, and Zac Hyder of Limestone; and her special friends: Mary and Luke Ball.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Dessie and Sebe Davis; one sister: Janet June Davis; and one brother: Carson Lee Davis.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Bowens will officiate.
Interment will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Broyles, Robert Holt, Eddie Tarlton, Kenneth Bitner, Johnny Lee Tarlton, and Danny Waites.
Honorary pallbearers will be Stacy Hensley, Dr. Andy Roberts and his staff, Dr. Mandeep Bakshi, the 4 East Nursing Staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital, the staffs of the cardiology department of Laughlin Memorial Hospital, especially Crystal, and Caris Heathcare.

Marvin's father, Luckey Crawford Broyles was born in 1905 to Vergetta "Jettie" (Bitner-Broyles) Wilhoit. Vergetta and Alfred K. Wilhoit were married about 1912 in Greene County, Tennessee. Luckey, and a brother, Fay Broyles, were born to Vergetta well before her marriage to Alfred. To unravel all this I'm going to start with Vergetta's mother, Keziah E. "Kisie" Broyles. Keziah was born in 1854 to Ephram and Matilda (Cannon) Broyles). In 1872 she married Jacob Cobb Bitner. Jacob and Kisie had three children, William Dobson Bither, James Elbert Bitner and a daughter, Dora Bitner. In the 1880 Census, Kisie, now divorced, is shown living with her mother. With them are Kisie's three children. All are using the "Broyles" surname. In the 1900 Census, Kisie is still living with her mother. She says she has had four children and all four are still living. James Elbert Bitner is the only one of Kisie's children living with her. In the 1910 Census, Kisie is living with her son, James Elbert Bitner. James is shown as the head of the household. Living with them is Vergetta "Jettie" Bitner who is listed as James Elbert Bitner's sister. Jettie is listed as single but says she has two children and both are living. Also shown in the 1910 Census are Luckey Burgner and Fay Woods. The two boys are listed as James Elbert Bitner's nephews. We know from other records that Luckey and Fay are Jettie's sons. In the 1920 Census, James Elbert Bitner is still the head of the household. Also in this census record are Kisie (again using the Broyles surname) and nephews, Luckey and Fay. The two boys are also using the Broyles surname. It appears that Kisie, Jettie, Luckey and Fay used the Broyles surname during the rest of their lives. A number of genealogies show that Vergetta's parents are Wyley Winton Broyles and Allie Mumpower but that does not seem to be correct. Wiley and Allie are shown in the 1900 Census and they do not have a daughter born in 1890. So, the remaining questions are 1) Was Kisie really Vergetta's mother and who was Vergetta's father? 2) Who was or were the father(s) of Vergetta's sons, Luckey and Fay? and 3) Where was Vergetta when the 1900 Census was taken?
