BASIC FACTS
Cleophas Edward "Edward" Smith was born on 15 September 1867 in Blountville, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1,8,2,9 He and Jennie Susan "Mimi" Cross were married on 17 September 1892.1,10 He died on 18 March 1957, at age 89, in Athens, McMinn Co., Tennessee.11 He was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Athens, McMinn Co., Tennessee.12,11,7 Cleophas Edward "Edward" Smith was also known as Cleophis Edward Smith.11 He had reference number 26174. He was a Farmer - general farming (1900 - 1940); school teacher in Sullivan and Greene Counties.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was enumerated on the census in Greene County, Tennessee (1900 - 1920); McMinn County, Tennessee (1930, 1940.) From Homer H. Smith's Genealogy of the Cross Family of Sullivan County, Tennessee:
C. E. Smith and Jennie Cross were married September 17, 1892. They taught school in Sullivan County and later in Greene County, Tennessee, near Afton. About 1923 they moved to Sanford, McMinn Co., Tennessee. Their daughter Gladys is a stenographer and lives in Florida. Their son Ralph married Mildred Armstrong and has a clothing store in Athens, Tennessee. Their son, Clifton, married Frances Higgins and is coach in Charleston High School. They have a son Don Alan Smith. Their daughter Elma married Blan Sherrill and they live at Sanford, Tennessee. They have a daughter, Frances Louise Sherrill.
Email from Don Alan Smith:
Papa, as my brother and I called him, and Mimi bought a big farm at Sanford, Tennessee, in McMinn County some time in the early 1920s. Sanford is now just a wide spot in the road, but back then it was a village in the proper sense of the word, with a country store and a post office within the store. Sometime around 1930 my uncle Blan Sherrill became the post-master. Sanford is between Riceville and Calhoun on the Lee Highway, US 11. Mimi of course was our grandmother; we knew she was a Cross before she and Papa married in Upper East Tennessee. I have heard it said that Papa introduced tobacco farming to Lower East Tennessee. At some time after the war warehouses with auctions were established in Sweetwater and Athens; Papa played a big part in getting these going; before that, the southern-most warehouse in East Tennessee was in Knoxville. By now, of course, tobacco farming has really declined. But while it lasted Papa was a strong supporter of the federal “tobacco program,” with its system of allotments to keep a lid on supply. So too was he a strong supporter of the New Deal and the TVA: he and Mimi went down to Chickamauga Dam on the TN River when President Roosevelt came to “dedicate" it.
Back to Upper East: My father was born in Chuckey, short for Nolichuckey, Greene County. I assume that that is where the family moved from in the early 20s. By then, Gladys, the oldest of the four children, had graduated from Tusculum College (the first college graduate in the family) and gone to Washington DC to find work that fit her talents and abilities. She hated farm work. I expect that her success there may have had something to do with opportunities open to women at the time of the First World War. The 20s found her in post-war Florida’s boom. She made friends there with whom she kept in contact for years thereafter, but something went badly awry there: economic recession, nervous breakdown? I just don’t know. Mimi went to Miami on the train and brought Gladys back to E. Tennessee. I first knew her as a semi-invalid, suffering from frequent headaches, but she improved. She became her parents’ driver (they never learned how), secretary, bookkeeper, archivist, and general factotum. She became an active member of the Calhoun Methodist Church. (My grandparents were not churchgoers, although when the young minister of the newly established First Lutheran Church in Cleveland visited Mimi, she seemed to appreciate it. Is there a Lutheran strain in the Cross fabric?) Gladys was a much appreciated citizen of the southern part of McMinn County, but I don’t think she had any social life outside the family. I thought that she must have had a lot of money; but, if she did, much of it must have gone to shoring up George Sherrill’s wayward life and to needy causes that she learned about. She lived to an advanced old age---I can’t remember when, but I distinctly remember her attending my father’s funeral at the Broad Street Methodist Church in Cleveland in 1984. She was probably in her nineties then. As far as I know, all the Methodist Smiths that I know of were members of what before 1939 was the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
