Jacob Latture Jones1,2,3,4,5
M, #17683, b. 24 July 1860, d. 19 December 1919
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Jacob Latture Jones was born on 24 July 1860 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1,2,6 He and Nancy Ann "Nannie" Gross were married on 18 December 1881. He died on 19 December 1919, at age 59.1 He was buried in New Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.7 Jacob Latture Jones had reference number 17952. He was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1870, 1880, 1900, 1910.) He was a Farmer (1880, 1900, 1910.)3,4,5 This excerpt is taken from the history of Walter Clyde and Hassie Jones Smith titled "On the Hill" and writtien by Frank Stewart Smith.
Jacob Latture Jones was born July 24, 1860, and died December 19, 1919. He was married December 18, 1881, to Nancy Ann Gross, who was born May 2, 1862, and died September 29, 1945. Both are buried in New Bethel Cemetery
Here let me include a paragraph about the Grosses. The Gross genealogy traces back to Jacob Gross (I) who died around 1790. His grave is one of the earliest in New Bethel Cemetery. New Bethel Presbyterian Church was organized in 1782. Jacob Gross (I) was supposed to be one of the original members. The New Bethel Sesquicentennial Book, published in 1932, has a revealing footnote on Jacob Gross (II), the son of Jacob Gross (I). Near the close of his “very irregular life of more than three score and ten years”, he professed repentance and was restored to the church before his death in 1872. The son of Jacob Gross (II) was Alfred Farrington Gross. A.F. Gross was a gunsmith, served with the Jackson Home Guard (local defense troops) during the Civil War. Nancy Gross Jones was the daughter of A.F. Gross and Julia Woods Gross
Now back to the Joneses once more. The two brothers, Jacob Latture “Jake” Jones and George Whitfield “Whit” Jones, were business partners during their early adult life. They did logging and saw milling. Just after the turn of the century, together they purchased a threshing rig and did some custom work for area farmers. This was of course long before the emergence of tractors and combines as we know them today. At one time the two brothers joined with other locals to launch the short-lived Piney Flats Manufacturing and Canning Company. They owned farms adjoining one another. Together they built two fine brick homes, one for each. Bricks were molded and fired on site. In time, the corporate ventures were abandoned in favor of full time farming. The Whit Jones farmhouse was demolished many years ago. The J.L. Jones home still stands on the North Slope of Poplar Ridge, but in sadly neglected disrepair.
