Poplar Ridge Christian Church, Piney Flats, Tennessee, was the setting on Saturday, July 26 at 11 o'clock in the morning for the wedding of Miss Marjorie Kathleen Cross, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rice Hicks Cross, Sr. of Piney Flats to Mr. John Roger Ralph of Tullahoma and Goodlettsville, Tennessee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Ralph of Goodlettsville.
The Rev. Edward Hayes, church pastor, was the officiating minister for the single ring ceremony.
Vows were exchanged before a background of English ivy and magnolias. Tall wicker baskets of white gladioli were placed at either side of the altar.

was give by Miss Brown, pianist of Piney Flats, Mrs. Joe Hardwick, violinist, of Bristol and Mrs. Joe Sutherland, soloist, of Johnson City. Preceding the ceremony Miss Brown and Mrs. Hardwick presented "Poems" - Fibich, "Calm as the Night" - Bohm and "The Rosary" - Nevin. Mr. Sutherland's selections were "Because" D'Hardelot and "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life." During the ceremony Miss Brown and Mrs. Hardwick softly played "Ave Maria" - Shubert-Wilhelmj. The traditional wedding marches were used.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose for her wedding a white ballerina-length gown of marquisette over white .....

Glenn Richard Torbett Sr., 74, 707 S. Mountain View Circle, died Tuesday, July 25, 1989, in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
He was a Piney Flats native but had lived most of his life in Johnson City. Mr. Torbett was a son of the late Millard and Zeffie Zimmerman Torbett.
He was a member of Muncey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was active in several committees.
Mr. Torbett was a World War II Air Corps veteran.
He was a retired vice president of Summers Hardware with 49 years service. After retirement, he worked for Golden Key Real Estate.
Mr. Torbett was a charter member of the Metro Kiwanis Club, serving as president from 1972-73. He was a member of the Johnson City Home Builders Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Cross Torbett; step-mother, Ollie Torbett, Piney Flats; two sons, G. In the 1900 Census, Tennessee is reported to have had five children and that all five are still living. All five children are shown in the 1900 Census. In the 1910 Census, Tennessee says that she has had eight children and seven are still living. All seven living children are shown in the 1910 Census. There is a boy buried in the Cross Cemetery: James K Hancher, born 24 June 1900 and died, 20 December 1908. I believe that he is the missing child in the 1910 Census.

MISS VIRGINIA D. HANCHER
PINEY FLATS – Miss Virginia DeVault Hancher, 88, 1396 Weaver Branch Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1991, at her home.
She was a Sullivan County native and a daughter of the late Joseph D. and Tennie Cross Hancher.
Miss Hancher was a graduate of Bluff City High School and a graduate of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City.
She was a school teacher for 44 years. Miss Hancher taught at schools in Carter County; at Mary Hughes, Holston Institute and Bluff City high schools; and at Chattanooga Junior High School. She also taught grade school in Benhams, Ky.
After retiring, Miss Hancher served as director of a sorority house at Newberry (S.C.) College.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Bristol, and was a member of Faith Lutheran Senior Citizens.
Miss Hancher was a charter member of the Sullivan County Historical Society; a member of Julius-Dugger Daughters of the American Revolution, Elizabethton; a member of the Retired Teacher Association, Sullivan County; and a member of both the Tennessee Retired Teachers Association and the National Retired Teachers Association.
She was a member of the Golden Fifties Club of ETSU, the Daughters of the American Revolution Commander’s Club, Rocky Mount Historical Association and the Mary Hughes Senior Citizens.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
