Rice H. Cross Jr., 75, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Cross came to Oak Ridge in 1961 with the Atomic Energy Commission from Cincinnati, Ohio. He retired in April 1986 as a general engineer with the Department of Energy.
Born July 3, 1925, in Piney Flats, he was the son of Rice H. and Nancy Mottern Cross, now deceased. He attended Milligan College, where he played football and basketball.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Cross graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1951.
He was an elder of the West Village Christian Church and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. According to his family, he also enjoyed growing and selling vegetables at the farmer's market and playing golf.
Mr. Cross is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Nelms Cross; a son, Rice H. Cross III and his wife, Holly, of Oak Ridge; and three daughters, Kelly Loveless and her husband, Paul, of Houston, Texas, Nancy Peters and her husband, Wayne "Buddy," of Oliver Springs, and Jane Schneider of Oak Ridge.
He is also survived by three brothers and a sister, Kyle Cross of Jonesborough, Bill Cross of Piney Flats, and Duane Cross and Martha Lacy, both of Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Ann Nelms Beard of Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Daniel Cross, Natalie Cross, James Schneider, Jacob Schneider and Joshua Schneider, all of Oak Ridge, and Paul Loveless and Lynsey Loveless of Houston; and by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. Don Bullock and Greg Pitner will officiate.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the West Village Christian Church, 637 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Blountville -- Joseph Rhea Crawford, 67, died a this home here at 7:45 Sunday.
He was owner and operator of a general merchandise store at Indian Springs for a number of years.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Blountville Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the New Gunnings cemetery.
The Rev. Paul Counts will officiate, assisted by the Rev. George S. Derrick, the Rev. P. H. Horner and the Rev. J. R. Heifner. The body will be removed to the home Monday at 4 p.m. from the Huff Funeral Home in Kingsport.
Mr. Crawford was a member of the Holston Grove Lutheran Church and of the Woodmen of America.
Son of the late Samuel and Fannie Bachman Crawford, he is survived by his widow, Mrs Bertie Cross Crawford; by one sister, Mrs. Daisy Reid, and one niece, Miss Frances Reid, both of Cincinnati. A brother, John Crawford, preceded him in death.
Pall bearers will be H. N. White, Lee S. Anderson, R. B. Shaver, Raymond Massengill, Paul F. Anderson and Charles N. Cartwright.

James B. Masengill
James B. (B) Masengill of Chuckey died early Saturday morning in Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
A retired rural mail carrier and farmer, he was a member of the Chuckey Presbyterian Church, having served as Sunday School secretary for many years. He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his wife: Mrs. Lila Bitner Masengill of Chuckey; one son: Jimmy Masengill of Greenville; one brother: Reece Masengill of Russell ville; two sisters: Mrs. Sue Britton and Miss Lucille Masengill, both of Church Hill.
Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. at Jeffers Mortuary Chapel with interment in Chuckey United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Finlay officiated.
The VFW was in charge of the graveside service.
Pallbearers were Leonard Bailey, Ross Daniels, Andy Hensley, Clifford Williamson, John Emmett, Howard Thompson, Bobby Broyles and Ernest Carter.
Jeffers Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

MORRISTOWN -- Royston Hicks Masengill, 83, died at 11:15 Monday at his home in the Valley home community. He was a prominent farmer of Hamblen County, a former member of the county court and Hamblen County Road Superintendent. He was active on the Morristown Tobacco Market, was a member of the Panther Springs methodist Church and was a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ann Bell Masengill; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Ann Pyles, Knoxville; four sons, Douglas, Roy, Ralph, and Bill Masengill, all of Morristown; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Robert l. Wood, Morristown and Mrs. W. Ray Colboch, Rogersville; three brothers, William C. Masengill, Greeneville, J. W. Masengill and H. Rogan Masengill, both of Morristown; one uncle, George Masengill, Morristown.
Stephens Funeral Home, Morristown, is in charge.

W. C. (Bill) Masengill, 90, of 1015 Carson St., Greeneville, died Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in Durham-Hensley Nursing Home.
He was a retired salesman and farmer and member of Asbury Methodist Church. He was a member of the Greeneville Rotary Club and the Greeneville Elks Lodge, was a city alderman for 20 years.
Surviving are his wife: Helen Ruth Tullock Masengill; a son: Felty Masengill of Greeneville; two daughters: Mrs. Jim (Dinah) Seip of Greeneville, and Mrs. Hugh (Margaret) Wilhoit of Greeneville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister: Mrs. Ray (Deborah) Colboch of Rogersville; two brothers: J. W. and Rogan Masengill of Morristown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Baker Masengill; his parents, William Dallas and Florence Cross Masengill; a brother and five sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Kiser Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Y. Bacon and the Rev. Don McNair officiating. Interment will be in Greenelawn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Ralph, Douglas, Roy, William Wayne and Luke Masengill, Bobby Wood, Dean Howell and William Dallas Seip.
Honorary pallbearers will be C. W. Justice, John M. Jones, Charlie Hendrickson, Hubert Neas, John Wallace, Charles Bowers, Earl Smith, Ross Reed, Clark Harrison, Jack (Copper) Pierce, members of the Men's Bible Class of Asbury United Methodist Church, Roy Timmons, Percy Wilhoit Sr. and Robert Moore Jr.

William and Margaret had twin girls, Edna Mae and Margaret McCord, born on January 27, 1925. Daughter Edna died the next day and Margaret died three days after that. In the 1930 Census, William is living alone and daughter Margaret is living with her aunt, Jennie DeVault (Masengill) Wood.

The Masengills came from Whitby, Yorkshire, England in the 1600-1700's, and settled in East Tennessee. Howard Rogan Masengill was born June 27, 1905 on the Rogan Farm near Rogersville, Tennessee in Hawkins County.
The family bought and moved to a farm near Morristown, Tennessee February 1907. He graduated from Morristown High School in May 1924. He entered The University of Tennessee in September, 1924 and graduated in June 1928.
While at the university, he lettered in track, won a gold medal boxing, was on the cross country team and on the rifle champion team for three years. Took ROTC four years and commissioned second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves.
The next thirteen years, he taught school at The Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in Jamestown, Tennessee and Jonesborough High School in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
During these thirteen years he attended the Company Officers course, Heavy Weapons course and the Battalion Officers course at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Graduated from the Command and General staff School at Fort Leavenworth, January 5, 1945. Served with First Tank Destroyer Group in European-African, Middle Eastern Campaign, army of occupation in Germany and Executive Officer of occupation in Germany and Executive Officer of Taegu Military Post in Korea.
In the Inter-Allied shooting match he won first place in competition with picked teams representing Great Britan and France held in Tunis, Tunesia, December 24, 1943.
Rogan Masengill married Doris Case of Jamestown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward R. Case, Sr., December 22, 1938. Doris was educated in grade school in Jamestown, Cumberland Mt. High School in Crossville, Tennessee, and at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee and Draughon's Business College in Nashville, Tennessee. She was employed as a legal secretary in her father's law office after she finished business school and until she was married.
Rogan and Doris have one daughter, Myra Sue Masengill. She attended grammar schools in nine different states and graduated from high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She attended Greensboro College, Greensboro, North Carolina two years, then transferred to University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee and graduated in 1962 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She now teaches Home Economics at Morristown-Hamblen High School East.
Sue married Tommy R. Fox of Morristown, Tennessee, July 29, 1972. They have one daughter, Allison Case Fox born June 10, 1979. Tommy is a graduate of Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee and has a Masters degree from Union College in Kentucky. He taught school eleven years after graduation. He is now Regional Vice-President with A. L. Williams Company.
Rogan Masengill retired from the Army February 28, 1960 and the Army Reserves June 30, 1960 as Lieutenant Colonel. He taught Vocational Agriculture at the Alvin C. York Agriculture Institute in Jamestown, Tennessee and Cocke County High School for thirteen years after retiring.
Mr. and Mrs. Rogan Masengill and Mr. and Mrs. Tommy R. Fox and Allison reside in Morristown, Tennessee.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Springs Methodist Church. Rev. Allen Carpenter, and Rev. Bobby Ely will officiate. Burial will follow in the Jarnegan Cemetery.
Pall Bearers will be Fred Howard, Walter McGinnis, Hubert Bell, Mike Murror, Prentiss Moyers, Walter Thompson.
Flowerbearers will be members of the Adult Sunday School Class.
The body will be returned from the Colboch-Price Funeral Home to the home at 2 p.m. Saturday, and will be taken to the church one hour before services.
