Mr. Ronald Braxton "R.B." Cross of Piney Flats, died Sunday, surrounded by his family at his residence.
A native of Piney Flats, he was a son of the late Eva Torbett and Arleigh Clyde Cross.
Mr. Cross honorably served his country in the US NAVY during World War II. He was a Bronze Star and Silver Star recipient and received a Naval Citation for his meritorious service during the landing of Iwo Jima. Mr. Cross was present when the American Flag was raised at Iwo Jima.
Known for being the "rock" of his entire family, Mr. Cross's life was guided by his faith, his family and the Golden Rule.
A member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church, he served as a Deacon and a Trustee. He was a retired maintenance foreman from Lancaster Associates. He served several years as the Fire Chief of Piney Flats Volunteer Fire Dept., and was a member of the Bluff City Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post #6975.
The joys in his life were his family and grandchildren, the Atlanta Braves' games on TV or Radio, gardening and helping others.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cross was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Christine Cross; two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Teddy) Johnson of Piney Flats; son, Stanley (Patricia) Cross of Piney Flats; sister, Ida Mae Denton of Piney Flats; brother, Lewis "Jake" Cross of Piney Flats; three grandchildren, Robyn (Stacy) Ivester, Brandon (Anne) Cross, all of Piney Flats, and Amber Cross of Johnson City; three great-grandchildren, Braxton Lee Cross, Kendall Ivester, Clayton Ivester, all of Piney Flats; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 at Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City, with Mr. Roland Whittemore and Mr. Brad Perry, ministers, officiating. His family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until the service hour.
A Committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Poplar Ridge Christian Church Cemetery with military honors bestowed by the Kingsport Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post #3382 and the TN Army National Guard. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Shane Hale, Donnie Carter, John King, Tony Stout, Jerry Dempsey, David Tipton, Darius Hensley and Terry Denton.

PINEY FLATS - Lewis Clyde “Jake” Cross, 89, of Piney Flats, died Saturday, February 23, at The Waters of Johnson City.
He was the son of the late Arleigh and Eva Torbett Cross.
Jake was a member of Piney Flats United Methodist Church and New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats of late.
He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, and was stationed in Germany throughout the Cold War. After leaving the army he worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation for 35 years. After retiring from TDOT, he worked at F.J. Torbett Plant Farm in Piney Flats, helping his daughter and son-in-law, Phillip Torbett, at the greenhouse.
Jake was a lifelong member of the Bluff City Rescue Squad. He had received an award for being Piney Flats Ruritan Man of the Year.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by: three brothers, Ronald, Ralph, and David Cross; three sisters, Louise Jarrett, Ida Mae Denton, and Betty Ann Langston.
Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Mary Louise Hyatt Cross; daughter, Denise Torbett of Piney Flats; son, Michael Cross and his wife Katie, of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Colby Torbett of Piney Flats, Sheena Albright and her husband Patrick, of Kingsport, and Megan Kinkead and her husband Matthew, of Blountville; four great-grandchildren, Emma Grace and Cameron Albright, and Gunner and Zeke Kinkead.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Jake’s nieces and nephews for their love and support. They would also like to express a warm thanks to the caregivers and staff at The Waters of Johnson City for their loving care of Jake.
The family of Jake Cross will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM, officiated by Reverend Eric Spoon and Mr. Dell Gates. A committal service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Shell Cemetery in Piney Flats. Family and friends are asked to gather at the graveside by 10:50 AM.

Mr. Jackson was born Jan. 14, 1931 in Greeneville, a son of the late Warner Glen Jackson and Bessie Evelyn Jackson Pope.
He retired from Mead Paper after 42 years of service and was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Elizabeth Cross Jackson; and his step-father, Charles H. Pope, Sr.
Survivors include children, Dr. Ann Jackson and her husband, Dr. Stephen Fahrig of Nashville; David Jackson of Snellville, Ga.; grandchildren, Lindsay Smith, Emily Smith and Abby Smith all of Nashville.
The family will receive friends today from 12 to 2 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. with Pastor Stuart Albee officiating.
Burial will be private at a later time.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Campbell, John Sprigs, Whit Cross, Tim Holdway and Tom Holdway.
