OLDEST LIVING CHILD BORN HERE IS MARRIED
When Frank Boone Shortridge and Miss Tulen E. DeWald, both of this city, were married at Eugene Saturday, there ended for Mr. Shortridge 61 years of watchful waiting for the girl who just suited, although he is not a watchful waiter in any other way, and will not allow his marriage to interfere with duty to country should his services be needed. Mr. Shortridge is the oldest living white child born in Cottage Grove and a son of those well known pioneers, “Aunt” Amelia Shortridge and the late James H. Shortridge. He was a well known athlete and sprinter during his younger years and would still pass for 20 years less then his actual age. The bride is 45 years of age and a native of Tennessee, although she has lived here a number of years. She is a daughter of the late W.V. DeWald. The wedding was quietly solemnized at the Hotel Osburn, Rev. H.W. Davis, of the Baptist church, officiating, and Mr. and Mrs. Osburn being the only other witnesses.

BASIC FACTS
James Miller DeWald was born on 16 October 1839 in Washington Co., Tennessee.1 He and Martha Northington were married on 14 September 1864 in Washington Co., Tennessee.1,5 He and Nancy E. "Nannie" Northington were married in 1880.6 He died on 30 October 1899, at age 60.1 He was buried in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Limestone, Washington Co., Tennessee (V.)1 James Miller DeWald had reference number 3281. He resided in Sullivan Co., Tennessee; Washington Co., Tennessee (abt 1880.)1,6 Civil War, Confederate Army.7 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850, 1860, 1880.) He was a Carpenter (1880.)3 James Miller Dewald was born in Washington County, Tennessee. Newland says that he lived for a while in Sullivan County and then returned to Washington County. (Dorothy DeVault Bicknell says that James lived 2 to 3 miles east of his parents on the road to Limestone. Their house was on the Nollichucky River just below Jackson Bridge.)
James married sisters Martha and Nancy "Nannie" Northington. Martha died in 1878. She and several of her children are buried in Bristol City Cemetery, Bristol, Bristol City Co., Virginia. Shortly after Martha's death, James and his family were living with Martha's sister, Julia A. (Northington) Witt and her family. James, Nannie and a son are buried in the New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Limestone, Washington Co., Tennessee.
James is one of two James Miller Dewalds/DeVaults. The other was the grandson of Michael Dewald of Berks County, Pennsylvania. (Our James Miller Dewald being the grandson of Henry Dewald of York County, Pennsylvania.) Both James Miller Dewalds/DeVaults were the seventh child of a Daniel and Mary Dewald. Both lived in east Tennessee. This similarity has caused consideral confusion in some early genealogies.

Blountville - The death of Frank J. Dewald, 78, which occured Tuesday night at a Bristol hospital, and that of his wife, Mrs. Ada Lee Dewald, also 78, who died just 26 hours earlier, were attributed to complications resulting from their inhaling fumes in an early morning fire at the county home according to Dr. S. R. McDowell.
Bob Carter, superintendent of the county home, where the elderly couple resided for the last two months, stated, "At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Mr. Dewald struck a match in his room and it set the bed afire. Neither he or Mrs. Dewald were burned but when I got to them they were strangling on the smoke. I couldn't get a doctor right away."
Dr. McDowell, who is the county physician, was quoted as saying; "I did not see Mrs. Dewald and did not see Mr. Dewald until Tuesday. Mrs. Dewald had been an invalid for some time. Mr. Dewald developed pneumonia and I had him taken to the hospital in an ambulance. I think it was the smoke that caused their conditions."
Mr. Carter told relatives of the couple that he tried for two days to get a doctor.
Mr. Dewald, a native of Limestone, spent most of his life in Bristol where he worked as a carpenter.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Surviving are two foster daughters, Mrs. Abe Mauk of Knoxville and Mrs. Alberta Arnold of Washington, D. C.

Spanish-American War, Phillipines, Company E 14th US Infantry.1,3 He resided in Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee (bef 1900); Last heard of at Presidio (near San Francisco, California?)8,3 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1880), Phillipine Islands, Military Station Cuartel de Mersik (1900); California, Contra Costa County (1910.) He was a Factory worker (1910.)4 In Newland's book the following information appears under Charles Pepper Dewald:
"4-Charles Pepper Dewald b 1872-left home when 9 years old - later
served in the Spanish-American war in the Phillipines. Never
returned home, but wrote once a year for a while; Married a
Jennie _____; separated; last hear of in the 20's. Two
children:
a-Thomas Dewald - changed name to Davault lived in Banning
from 1946. I contacted him-twice-said he knew nothing
about his family. He married Alpha Craver, who was
b July 22 1914 at Kenefic, Okla; she died Sunday
Feb 1st 1975 at Banning. Four daughter and one son;
Bobbie of Kileen, Texas; Laretha Morven of Phoenix;
Della Coggins, Riverside and Fran Furey, Flagstaff,
Ariz a son, Doil of San Bernardino, who m Nancy Springer of
Beaumont about 1956.
b-Geo A Davault - living I think in San Diego area"
Charles' mother died in 1878 when Charles was six years old. In the 1880 Census, Charles, his father and siblings were living with Charles' aunt Julia A. (Northington) Witt* and her family. It is possible that when Charles father, James Miller Dewald, remarried, Charles stayed with his aunt and this gave rise to the Newland's comment that he left home at nine years of age.
Regarding the family of Charles' son Thomas: I'm sure that Newland must have met a Thomas Davault and learned of his family when both were living in Banning, California. However, he is not the son of Charles Pepper Dewald. He is Thomas C. Davault born on December 18, 1912 in Oklahoma and died August 26, 1977 in Riverside County (SSN: 447-07-1275). He is the son of Henry Gordon and Bessie Rosalena (Campbell) Davault. Thomas C. Davault is a descendant of Abraham and Catherine (Gross) DeVault and is not a descendant of Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania. I have deleted the information on the family of Thomas C. Davault from this genealogy.
I have left the information about wife Jennie and two sons, Thomas and George. So far I have found no record of a marriage or children. There is a Jennie (Weaver) Dewald listed in the 1920 Census for Darke County, Ohio. She is divorced and living with her brother John Weaver and his family. No Dewald children were listed in this census record.
Charles Pepper Dewald was in the Spanish-American War. He died in Los Angeles County, California and is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
I have often wondered where Charles' middle name comes from. I noticed in the Green Hill Cemetery in Bristol, Virgina that there is a "Pepper" family. Charles' parents lived in the area and his mother is buried in the Green Hill Cemetery.
* Note: Julia A. (Northington) Witt is buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington Co., Tennessee. She is not far from Charles' father and step-mother.
