Andrew J. Sherfey1,2,3
M, #26110, b. 24 October 1864, d. 13 January 1893
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Andrew J. Sherfey was born on 24 October 1864 in California.1,2 He died on 13 January 1893, at age 28, in Ione, Amador Co., California.1 He was buried in Live Oak Cemetery, Sacramento Co., California.1 Andrew J. Sherfey had reference number 26387. He was enumerated on the census in Sacramento County, California (1870, 1880.) He was a Farm laborer (1880.)3 The information collected here for the family of Andrew Sherfey is the product of a great deal of conjecture and supposition. The International Genealogical Index (IGI Version 5.0) shows a Mary F. Sherfey, listed as Andrew's sister. Mary F. Sherfey is buried in the same cemetery as Andrew. Her birth date (August 10, 1859) and birth place (Missouri) were taken from Mary's tombstone. Rather than being Andrew's sister, I think that she was his wife. There are a couple of facts that support this assumption. First, there was already a sister named Mary (Mary Catherine Sherfey). Second, Mary Frances Sherfey was born in Missouri. The birth locations of the other Sherfey children show that the family was living in Illinois at the time that Mary Frances was born. Subsequent investigation led to the belief that the maiden name of Mary Frances Sherfey was "Sumpter". Mary F. Sumpter is shown in several census records, while still single She was the correct age and born in the correct place to be Mary Frances Sherfey. In 1880 Mary Frances Sumpter, still single, was living in Amador County, California near the Sherfey family.
Both Andrew and Mary Frances Sherfey died young. Any minor children from this marriage would probably have been taken in by other family members. The 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records show an Alice M. Sherfey, living with Andrew's sister, Mary Catherine (Sherfey) Nordyke. In these census records Alice is listed as Mary Catherine's niece. The census records also show that Alice's father was born in California. In the 1910 Census Andrew's brother Samuel and his wife Louisa are shown with two girls, Edith and Ethel. I could not tell how the girls are related to Samuel, but they may have been nieces. Neither of these two girls ever married and always used the Sherfey surname. In the 1910 and 1920 census records, the girls show that their father was born in California. The only Sherfey sibling born in California was Andrew. I have assumed that these three children were the children of Andrew and Mary Frances (Sumpter) Sherfey.
Not all the facts agree with these assumptions. In the 1930 census record Edith and Ethel list their father's birth place as Tennessee and not California. (Possibly they were thinking of their adoptive father, Samuel.) Also, Andrew died on January 13, 1893. This was exactly ten months before Edith and Ethel were born. None of the census records list these children's mother as having been born in Missouri.

John L. Crouch1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
M, #26122, b. 4 October 1860, d. 29 July 1931
Parents
BASIC FACTS
John L. Crouch was born on 4 October 1860 in Illinois.2 He was born about 1867 in Illinois.1 He and Julia Acenia Brown were married in 1881.5 He died on 29 July 1931, at age 70, in Joplin, Jasper Co., Missouri.5,9 He was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City, Jasper Co., Missouri.10 John L. Crouch had reference number 26399. He was enumerated on the census in Greene County, Illinois (1870, 1880); Jasper County, Missouri (1900 - 1930.) He was a Produce Commission - Merchant (1900); commission man (1910); produce commission company (1920); manager - commission house (1930); self employed broker - commission (death certificate.)4,9,6,7,8 I believe the John L. Crouch that was the son of Elbert Crouch and Mary Euin Melvin is the same John L. Crouch that is shown living in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri from 1900 until his death in 1931. Here is my thinking:
Let's start with the John L. Crouch that was the son of Elbert and Mary (Melvin) Crouch. John's parents were both born in Tennessee and their families were among the earliest to move from East Tennessee to Illinois. Most of these families settled in Macoupin and Greene Counties. John's parents were married in Greene County in 1843. It appears that they delayed starting a family for quite awhile. Elbert and Mary are shown in both the 1850 and 1860 Census without children. Mary (Melvin) Crouch died in 1865 and was buried in Hermitage Cemetery in Greene County, Illinois. Elbert quickly returned to Washington County, Tennessee where he married the widow Amanda Jane (Bacon) Combs. Then Elbert, Amanda and Amanda's daughter, Edna Arlena "Lena" Combs, returned to Greene County, Illinois. The first census that shows Elbert and Mary's children is the 1870 Census. In that census Elbert is shown with his second wife, Amanda. However, this 1870 census record seems to have several problems. The first listed child is John L. Crouch, shown as being 3 years old. In order for my hypothesis to be correct, John should have been 10 years old. The next child listed is Dicy Ella Crouch. She is listed as being 7 years old. Either John's age is incorrect or he and his sister are listed out of birth order. The third child in the census is Amanda's daughter, Edna Arlena "Lena" Combs. She is listed as Edgar Combs. I have pretty much decided to disregard the 1870 Census. In the 1880 Census, Elbert is still living with wife Amanda. The oldest child is John L. Crouch, age 20. This gives John an estimated birth year of about 1860. Elbert's daughter, Dicy Ella Crouch passed away and is not shown in the 1880 Census. The last child is Amanda's daughter, Edna. She is shown as Orlena Hale, a widow. This is Edna Arlena (Combs) Hale and she was, in fact, the widow of John G. Hale, who died in 1878 and was buried in Hermitage Cemetery. Not long after the 1880 Census it appears that Elbert and wife Amanda moved to Benton County, Arkansas. Elbert died there in 1883 and was buried in Barron Cemetery, Bentonville, Arkansas. The last we hear of this John L. Crouch is the 12 June 1889 newspaper article shown below. It says that John and his step-mother, Amanda are visiting in the Palmyra area. Palmyra is in Macoupin County. Elbert Crouch and family lived in neighboring Greene County but certainly had many friends and relatives living in Macoupin County. The article goes on to say that they have disposed of their personal property and are returning to Arkansas. After this newspaper article, nothing more is heard from this John L. Crouch, nothing. He disappeared off the face of the earth.
Okay, let's examine the John L. Crouch that appears in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. In one way he is the exact opposite of the above John L. Crouch. This John L. Crouch has no past. He is shown in various genealogies with no parents and no census records prior to 1900. However, there are some clues to his past. First, in the 1900 to 1930 Census records, this John L. Crouch says he was born in Illinois and both his parents were born in Tennessee. Let's see what we can learn from his family. John was married to Julia Acenia Brown. Julia's parents were Thomas R. Brown and Sarah Elizabeth Saxton. They were both born in Illinois and married in Greene County in 1862, the same county where the above John L. Crouch was born. Julia was born there in 1864. John and Julia were married about 1881. I do not know where they were married but their first two children were born in Illinois. The first was born in Greene County. At some point this John and Julia moved to Arkansas because their third child was born in Arkansas in 1893. We next find the family shown in the 1900 Census for Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. There they lived out their lives.
I think there are too many coincidences for these two John L. Crouches to be different people.

Hale had reference number 26401. I'm guessing that John F. Hall and John G. Hale are one and the same. John G. Hale is buried in Hermitage Cemetery, the same cemetery where Elbert Crouch's first wife is buried. John G. Hale's birth and death dates are about right. His parents were living next to Elbert Crouch and family in the 1880 Census. In that same census, Edna Arlena "Lena" (Combs) Hale, (shown as Orlena Hale) is living with her parents and shown as a widow.
