In 1918, Verena Devine, cousin to Ida, was the Strawberry Festival queen, and had four attendants, Misses Velma Murphy and Hilda Baertline, escorted by Harry Lutz from the army and Frank Godfrey from the Navy. That was during the first World War and everything was military. Even the celebration was postponed until July 4 and combined with Independence Day programs. Instead of being called a Strawberry Queen, Miss Devine, now Mrs. Fred Knowlen, was the Goddess of Liberty. No one knows what happened to the free strawberries, cake and cream, but as it was the only 1918 festival, it was counted as a Strawberry Fair and so goes down in history. The horse show and rose festival were held quite as usual. Could the season have been late enough that there were still berries? We do not know.

Webber P. Doughton, Sr., 94, of Lebanon, died on Monday, May 21, at Lebanon Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 25, at Calvary Community Church. Interment followed at the Lebanon I. O. O. F. Cemetery.
Doughton was born July 17, 1906, in Lebanon, the son of Bynum and Mary (Keebler) Doughton. He graduated from high school in Lebanon, then attended Oregon State University where he graduated in 1932 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He worked as a farmer. He also worked for several years in construction. He retired from farming at the age of 70.
He was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church.
He married Elida Norelius on Aug. 31, 1935, in Corvallis. She died in 1990. He married Mildred Walker on February 23, 1993, in Lebanon.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Lebanon; daughters Mary Ann Sanker of Albany, Judy Peterson of Lebanon, Joan Moore of Salem and Roberta Eudaly of Portland; sons John Doughton of Portland, Webber Doughton, Jr. of Newberg, George Doughton of Woodland, Calif. and Michael Doughton of Jefferson; step-sons James Walker and Richard Walker, both of Lebanon; sisters Ruth Powell of Wessington Springs, S.D. and Mary Helen Bundy of Lebanon; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Two brothers and four sisters died before him.
Huston-Jost Funeral Home handled arrangements.

LEBANON - Mary Helen Bundy, 82, of Lebanon died Thursday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Lebanon to Bynum and Mary (Keebler) Doughton. She married Dean Bundy on Feb. 8, 1953, in Vancouver, Wash.
She was a homemaker and had a great love for music, reading, friends and especially liked walks by the ocean and in the mountains.
Mrs. Bundy is survived by husband Dean of Lebanon; sons Dick Surry of Walla Walla, Wash., and Dennis of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., daughters Meri Surry and Margee Bundy-Blackford, both of Lebanon; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Brothers Millard, Preston and Webber Doughton and sisters Isabelle Phillips, Dorothy Mikkelson, Ruth Powell and Margaret Doughton preceded her in death.
A memorial service will begin at noon Tuesday at the Free Methodist Church in Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery.
