The Coueys'
Joseph Lincoln, Georgia Catherine, son Elbert and daughter Gladys arrived in Cayley in September, 1904 from Lebanon, Oregon. Dad brought a car of settlers effects; a jersey cow, driving horse for the new "Surrey with the fringe on top", dozens of jars of fruit as we knew there was no fruit grown in Alberta at that time, and our furniture.
Dad had come up to Alberta the spring of 1904 and as he had the late C. C. Chaffee in Oregon, who also had come up the year before, he landed at Cayley and was invited to stay at the Chaffe home to look the country over. He went as far north as Lacombe, but that had been a wet year and he saw the farm machinery mired down in mud, so he chose the Cayley district. He filed on a homestead southeast of Cayley.
He returned to Lebanon and made arrangements to get away in September - and when the family arrived here the Chaffees' asked us to stay with them until we found a place to live. We went into Cayley and lived in a house owned by Nurse Murray for that winter. We lived upstairs and she down.
As there was no school in Cayley, Elbert and I walked a mile and a half to the school south of town. We found it very cold after living in Oregon. I remember that Elbert's ears were frost-bitten on the way from school one day, and mother wrote to one of her sisters in Oregon and told her and she wrote back and asked if his ears would come off. Our first teachers were Mamie Caspell (the late Mamie Marshall) and her sister Edna Caspell. J.T. North was a teacher in the school too.
In 1905 Dad bought a farm south of Caley. Peter Johnson and Hugh Johnson were our neighbors. The Clever family lived further south and as their three girls, Edith, Fern and Jennie drove to school, they picked me up on the way.
We sold the farm south of Cayley and bought one north of town and moved there about 1907. The Chaffees had moved up there too, so we were neighbors for a number of years. I remember we all attended the first Calgary Fair in 1907. One sister, Wilma, was born in 1910 in that home and Dr. Brown was the attending doctor.
Elbert and I attended Last Chance school after this move and had some interesting times. In winter Dad would hitch a horse to a stone sled and take us as it was very cold in those winters, sometimes up to 50 degrees below zero.
We attended church in Cayley and all the women worked putting on church suppers. I think I was only about thirteen or fourteen when I sang in the choir, and even played the organ for a time. I took music lessons from Mrs. Frank Walker.
Dad and Mother went back to Oregon in 1918 to live, but Elbert stayed on the farm until his death in 1962. His son Eldon and family reside on the farm now. Wilma, now Mrs. Ray Howard, lives in Oregon, and I, Mrs. George Cope, live in Calgary.
