Museum building, once Guerrant Clinic, not without its own history, grandson says
Wallace Guerrant stood behind the podium of his great-grandfather, Edward O. Guerrant, while telling the history of the Guerrant Clinic and Hospital and his family's history. (Sun photo by James Mann)
The former Guerrant Clinic and Hospital looks much today like did in 1927 when the late Dr. E.P. Guerrant purchased the building and adapted it for use as a medical facility.
That's what Guerrant's grandson, Wallace Guerrant, said Tuesday, telling more than 100 people attending a grand opening ceremony Tuesday for the Bluegrass Heritage Museum that few changes to the building had been made over the years.
Wallace's grandfather, after completing his medical studies, came back to Winchester in 1912 and began practicing. He moved here intentionally, his grandson said, because E.P.'s father, the late Dr. E.O. Guerrant, a Civil War physician and later a Presbyterian minister, wanted a place where the most serious medical cases could come.
"It just so happens that the Louisville and Nashville Railroad came through Winchester. That was really the only viable means of getting cases out of the mountains that were really ill because bringing them down by road was just out of question," Wallace said, noting that while roads met, at the Estill County line there was no bridge.
When E.P. Guerrant came to Winchester, Wallace said, he started out at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, but the problem was that if one was in dire straits, traveling there likely would "just about kill you." Thus, E.P. began working toward fulfilling his father's dream of having a hospital for the mountain people of Kentucky.
E.P. closed down Winchester's first hospital, which was stationed on Fairfax Avenue, (West Lexington Avenue) after the Clark County Hospital opened. He later purchased the Guerrant building, which was first built as a house in the late 1800s.
Four years after the facility opened, it handled 1,074 cases from the mountains, Wallace said, 129 of those of which were hospitalized and 53 had major operations.
"This was a busy little center. By 1935, it was written up in the Courier-Journal as one of the four best small hospitals east of the Mississippi," Wallace said, noting there still is a fair amount of medical equipment stored on the building's third floor.
Wallace and his brother, Putney, he said, were raised nearby in a home on Highland Street. The first operating room, he said, was established on the second floor of the Guerrant Building, and was about 12 feet by 8 feet wide. It remained that way, Wallace said, until the third floor was raised, after which the operating room was transferred there.
The third floor then became the infections ward and was used for additional wards.
"At that time, small pox was still ravaging the countrysides," he said. "... A nurse also lived up on the third floor, but was not allowed to come down on the second or first floor," Wallace said.
Wallace also recalled the three different nurses' homes and how his grandfather was a rather "gruffey physician," unlike Wallace's father (the late Dr. Edward O. Guerrant), who was refined and smooth in his technique. He also spoke of his memories walking out the back door of his youth home, into the back door of the clinic, asking a secretary for a quarter and going to watch a movie at the Leeds Theatre.
"I'm excited about the future of this building," he said. "The second and third floor are still rather quaint looking as they were literally back in the 1920s, even though a few walls have been taken out. Many of you will recognize an old room where you were in beds," he said.
Many of the horsehair-filled mattresses used in the hospital/clinic were thrown away, but the family has stored many of the 1920 hospital beds, he said.
"You can't roll 'em up, can't crank 'em, you just have to lay still and be pillowed as best you can," Wallace said.
Wallace told those in attendance he was certain many had memories of the building and encouraged them to share them with himself, museum director Jim Pitts or tourism director Nancy Turner.

Martha J. Lipinska1,2
F, #4998, b. 22 February 1892, d. 26 August 1972
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Martha J. Lipinska was born on 22 February 1888.3 She was born on 22 February 1892 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.4,2,5 She and Russell Hamilton Guerrant were married on 22 September 1937.1,6 She died on 26 August 1972, at age 80, in Deland, Volusia Co., Florida.3 Martha J. Lipinska had reference number 5260. Her Social Security Number was 341-07-3911, issued: Illinois, last residence: Deland, Volusia Co., Florida.4 She was enumerated on the census in Cook County, Illinois (1920, 1930); Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (1940.) Martha was first married to Michael Stasiak (born about 1892) on 16 Apr 1913 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This marriage is shown in the Cook County, Illinois, Marriages Index, 1871 - 1920 (Ancestry.com). In this marriage record Martha's name is shown as Martha Lipinska.
Martha's second marriage was to and David L. Ferguson (14 Jan 1884, Whitehaven, Copeland Borough, Cumbria, England - 8 Sep 1924, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois). Martha and David were married twice. Their first marriage was on 10 Jun 1916 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan. This marriage is shown in Michigan, County Marriage Records, 1822 - 1940 (Ancestry.com). In this marriage record David's parents are listed as Robert Ferguson and Unknown Fleming. Also in this marriage record Martha is listed as Martha Lipinski Stasiak. Martha's parents are listed as Michael Lipinski Stasiak and Unknown Dravan. There is a second record for this same marriage that provides some additional information. It is shown in Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867 - 1952 (Ancestry.com). In this second marriage record it shows that this was David's first marriage and Martha's second marriage. It also shows that Martha's maiden name is Lipinski. Finally, it shows that David and Martha are both residents of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
Martha and David were married a second time on 30 Aug 1919 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This marriage is shown in Cook County, Illinois Marriage Indexes, 1912 - 1942 (Ancestry.com). In this Cook County marriage record Martha is listed as Martha Stasiak.
Martha's fourth marriage (third husband) was to Russell Hamilton Guerrant. They were married on 22 Sep 1937.
Martha and David L. Ferguson are shown in the 1920 Census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They are shown with a son, Roy R. Ferguson (17 Sep 1913, Illinois - 22 Dec 1988, Florida). In the 1930 Census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, Martha is shown as a widow with son Roy Ferguson.
Since Roy was born after Martha's marriage to Michiel Stasiak and before Martha's first marriage to David L. Ferguson, I suspect that Roy is the biological son of Michael Stasiak. Roy used the Ferguson surname his entire life.
In the Census records, Martha always showed her parents as having been born in Poland (Germany). There is a family shown in various records of Nicolaus Lipinski/Lipinska. Nicolaus (1833 - 29 Jan 1896, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois) and wife Mary Durawa were married before immigrating to the U.S.A. in 1872. They had 14 children, 7 of whom were still living in 1900. One of the surviving children was Martha Lipinski/Lipinska who was born in May 1892. Except for the month this looks like our Martha.
