Mary Elizabeth Kitzmiller was born on 6 September 1822 in Gray's Station, Washington Co., Tennessee.1,5 She and Samuel Erwin Edwards were married on 2 March 1845 in Washington Co., Tennessee.1,6 She died in May 1883, at age 60, in Gray's Station, Washington Co., Tennessee.1 She died on 27 September 1883, at age 61, in Gray's Station, Washington Co., Tennessee.5 She was buried in Buffalo Ridge Cemetery, Washington Co., Tennessee.1 Mary Elizabeth Kitzmiller had reference number 10000. She was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850 - 1870.) Several genealogies, including Newland's genealogy, show an Elijah Edwards as a child of this marriage. This appears to be the result of a census taker's error. The 1860 Census for Washington County, Tennessee shows the third child as Elijah A. Edwards, age 12. I believe that this is really Elizabeth A. "Eliza" Edwards who was age 12 in 1860. Eliza is not shown in the 1860 Census.

Parents
BASIC FACTS
Samuel Erwin Edwards was born on 20 September 1803 in Indian Creek, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6 He was born on 22 November 1803 in Indian Creek, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.7,6,8 He and Mary Elizabeth Kitzmiller were married on 2 March 1845 in Washington Co., Tennessee.7,5 He died on 6 April 1876, at age 72, in Tennessee.5 He died on 6 April 1878, at age 74, in Tennessee.7 He was buried in Buffalo Ridge Cemetery, Washington Co., Tennessee.8 Samuel Erwin Edwards had reference number 10001. He was a Blacksmith (1850, 1860); farmer (1870); large land owner.8,2,3,9 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850 - 1870.) Several genealogies say that Samuel was first married to Elizabeth Jobe (1805 - 1844).
According to Frederick Russell DeVault, Samuel Edwards owned the land the "Boone Tree" was on. (There is a marker there today.)
In 1839, at the removal of the Cherokees to Oklahoma, he assisted and was a 2nd Sergeant of the Volunteer Militia.
Samuel was a prominent member of the Old Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church. He was Chariman of the committee that accepted the resignation of Rev. Martin V. Kitzmiller, the fourth pastor of the church (1847-1851), who was a cousin of Samuel's wife, Mary Elizabeth (Kitzmiller) Edwards. Samuel had a large burial plot in the Old Buffalo Ridge Cemetery, where he and Mary Elizabeth are buried. It is 36 feet long, 10 feet wide, surrounded by a stone wall 3 feet high and has a small iron railing on top. Also buried in the plot are Samuel and Mary Elizabeth's first child, "Lizzie" Edwards and a grandson, Ernest Morrell, who died in infancy. Several genealogies, including Newland's genealogy, show an Elijah Edwards as a child of this marriage.

BIOGRAPHY - The National Cyclopedia of American Biography, Vol. 32, pages 371-372 plus photo page
EDWARDS, David Kitzmiller, grain merchant, was born near Jonesboro, Washington co., Tenn., Aug. 7, 1851, son of Samuel Erwin and Mary (Kitzmiller) Edwards. He was educated at a district school on Boone's Creek, Tenn., and at Holston Institute in Jonesboro. After teaching school for two years in his native state he taught for a year and a half in Texas, returning to Tennessee in 1873. In 1874 he removed to California and for six years taught school in Monterey county. He then entered the grain and warehouse business in the Salinas Valley, forming a partnership with Thomas W. Faw under the firm name of Faw & Edwards. In 1887 he removed to Los Angeles where in 1889 he formed with Max N. Newmark the firm of Newmark & Edwards, wholesale grain dealers and warehousemen, with headquarters in Los Angeles and warehouses in Redondo, Wiseburn, Northam, El Toro and Compton. He retired from active business in 1906. Edwards was a director of the Merchants National Bank of Los Angeles. From 1906 to 1909 he was a member of the Los Angeles board of public works and inspector of public works, one of his assoiates on the board being Gen. Adna R. Chaffee (q.v.). During this period was begun the great Los Angeles aqueduct, 250 miles in length, which cost $25,000,000. From 1911 to 1914 he was chairman of the Los Angeles county highway commission, which built 300 miles of good roads. For twenty years he was a director of the Y.M.C.A. of Los Angeles, to which he contributed liberally. He was a member of the Los Angeles chamber of commerce, the Masonic order and the California and San Gabriel Valley Country clubs. He also held various positions of honor and responsibility in the Temple Baptist Church, Los Angeles. Among the outstanding attributes of his character were love of his fellow man, a deep sense of personal responsibility as a citizen and a keen pleasure in the simple routine of his daily life. He radiated kindness and friendliness and his time, energy and financial resources were at the disposal of any worthy cause. He was married twice: (1) in San Jose, Calif., in January 1881, to Edith, daughter of Henry Rivers of Ontario, Canada; she died in 1898, leaving a daughter, Hazel Florence Edwards, who married James Roy Pinkham; (2) in Auburn, N. Y., Nov. 14, 1900 to Sarah Edith Hadley of Los Angeles. He died in Los Angeles, Calif., July 2, 1932.

----------
David K. Edwards, on of the ablest and most loved of the rapidly diminishing group of Los Angeles pioneers, died suddenly and peacefully at his home on Westmorland Boulevard yesterday afternoon from an attack of cerebral hemorrhage.
Born in Washington county, Tennessee, in 1857 [1851]. Mr. Edwards went with Thomas F. Fall [Faw] to the Salinas Valley in Central California in 1874. There he taught school, married Edith Rivers of San Jose, engaged in the grain business and attracted by the fame of the great boom here of 1886, made his way south and became a resident of Los Angeles.
Mr. Edwards was typical of the best that the boom brought. After a brief and not wholly detectable experience as a real estate agent, he became again a grain merchant and established the pioneer firm of Newmark & Edwards, grain dealers.
POPULATION LEAPS
When he arrived in Los Angeles, the permanent population was estimated at something less than 50,000; when the "pallid messenger" summoned him yesterday to depart, the population was estimated at something less than 1,500,000.
Only two months ago, at the time of the death of W. B. Mathews, who was City Attorney when Mr. Edwards was a member of the first municipal Board of Public Works, he called me on the phone to meet him for luncheon at the California Club, that we might talk over old times. I was City Hall reporter for The Times during the years he served on the Board of Public Works. His body was then feeble, but his brain was active and his memory unimpaired. To listen to him talk was like reading a history of the growth and development of Los Angeles during his formative years; for few men in Los Angeles had been so active in unremunerative public service as "Deacon" Edwards.
After about twenty years in active business he had retired, and for the next twenty-five years he devoted himself unselfishly to the public welfare, to the municipality, the church and the State. A brief resume of the public activities in which he engaged serves well as an object lesson to the present generation.
ON FIRST BOARD
When the bonds for the Owens River Aqueduct that brought a second river to Los Angeles were voted, the charter was amended and a board of public works was created, to be intrusted with Aqueduct affairs. There was a deadlock between Mayor and Council, for the politicians were looking after their own. Finally a citizens' committee was appointed to recommend three men to the Mayor and Council, and D. K. Edwards was the first man selected. With his associates, J. A. Anderson and A. A. Hubbard, he formed the first Board of Public Works. Anderson was succeeded at the end of the "short term" by Gen. Chaffee, and under the supervision of Chaffee, Edwards and Hubbard the Owens River Aqueduct was constructed.
Later, he served for four years on the Board of Education and was chairman of the Los Angeles Highway Commission. In 1906 Mr. Edwards became a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was one of the staunch supporters of Frank Wiggins, its most noted secretary.
For twenty-five years he was a director of the Merchants' National Bank and of the Fidelity Savings and Loan Association. He was a Baptist when he came to Los Angeles and a Baptist when he died. For an unbroken period of twenty years he was director-secretary of the Southern California Baptist Convention, and his death creates a vacancy on the board of directors.
BACKER OF Y.M.C.A.
He was deeply interested in the growth of the Young Men's Christian Association movement and was for many years a member of the board of directors of the Los Angeles Y.M.C.A.
Mr. Edwards was new in politics when he entered the old City Hall in 1906, but he brought with him a sterling character that was always above suspicion. In my last conversation with him he said to me. "I never believed the tales of graft and corruption in the old City Hall that malicious tongues used to relate. I served on the Board of Public Works for ten years or more and during that whole time no one ever approached me with an offer of a bribe or cut in on any public work, although the Aqueduct and the first outfall sewer were big jobs."
I smiled at his naive honesty that almost approached credulity; for I, too, knew the City Hall of those days; and while there were lobbyists of doubtful integrity and unmoral politicians, none was so stupid as to offer "Deacon" Edwards a bribe.
MARRIED TWICE
He was twice married, but he leaves no sons to carry on. The pride and concern of his last years centers about his two grandsons, the sons of his only daughter Hazel and her husband, J. Roy Pinkham.
Mr. Edwards married Edith Rivers of San Jose in 1881. She died in Los Angeles in 1891 and, a few years later he married Edith Hadley of Los Angeles, whom he leaves. Mrs. Hadley is well known here for the part she has taken in the growth and development of the Y.W.C.A.
Funeral services will be conducted in Francis Chapel of the First Baptist Church on Westmoreland Boulevard at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Rev. Dr. John Snape will preside.
As a final tribute to "Deacon" Edwards and his associates at the old City Hall, I recall a remark I heard one day in the press room "When one goes in to the the Board of Public Works, one doesn't need to carry a lantern to find an honest man."

"You will recall she is my youngest sister (a widow for some 15 years); two sons both in France - came home well and sound. Her only daughter, Gladys, a graduate of Occidental College and a fine Christian woman, is a teacher of physical education in Redonda High School (where her Uncle Joseph Polk lived). She wants to be a foreign missionary - when our F M S gets enough money to pay up debts and send out new forces. The boys are married now - have children - they live in nice new five-room cottages next to their mother. They are, with my help, getting their houses on the partial payment plan. Jonathan Edwards (Ed) Morrell was born December 6, 1878 in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was the son of John Wesley Morrell (born March 12, 1848 and died March 22, 1899) and Elizabeth Annie Edwards (born 1852 in Tennessee and died in the 1930’s). Ed Morrell married Alice (Allie) McPhaul (born February 18, 1875 in Guadalupe, California) on December 19, 1901 in Guadalupe, California at the home of Allie McPhaul.
Their son, Lyman, was born December 13, 1903 in a small cottage in Redondo Beach just a block north of their Catalina home that was moved to Heritage Court in Dominquez Park in 1989. He died in 1936. Daughter Velma was born January 16, 1906 and died after her 100th birthday on May 2, 2006 in Santa Barbara, California. The family did not move into the Morrell House until after Velma was born.
Lyman and Velma both graduated from Redondo Union High School. Velma was class valedictorian in the class of 1923 and graduated from college in 1927. Lyman owned a hardware store in Redondo Beach.
Ed and Allie Morrell moved to Monrovia around 1933 to be near Lyman. He was in the Pottingers Sanitarium for tuberculosis. They rented their home to two teachers, Rachel DeNick and Aileen Hammond, who taught at Redondo Union High School. They moved back to their home on Catalina when they thought Lyman was doing better. There was a downstairs apartment added to the back of the house for Lyman because of the tuberculosis.
Sun Parlor:
Ed put a door from the parlor to the kitchen to avoid having to walk all the way around to answer the door. It had Wilton carpet with a narrow border of wood earth tones. All floors were wood plank. The tiny closet behind the front door was for overcoats. The windows had shades and sheer netting. The davenport sat on the north wall under the window and had a tweedy with tan and brown upholstery. It seated three and had flat wood arms. You could see the entire wood frame. There was a mahogany cabinet with china dishes and a hall tree.
Living Room:
It also had Wilton carpet with border in blues and went to within one foot of the walls. There was a player piano on the north wall near the toy closet. The toy closet had a doll buggy, table, glass dishes and games. There was a black desk facing west on the wall between the pocket door and south wall. It had a pull down front for writing, one drawer and chair. The phone sat on the mantel. The living room had a black mantel clock. The built in book case was full of books, Bobsey Twins, William S. Hart and a domino set. There was also a stereoptica with cards on the shelf.
Stairway:
The stairway from the parlor had a deep forest green runner with brass holders. The stairway from the dining room did not have carpet. At the top of the stairs there was a big round light, about 9” diameter round ball.
Dining Room:
There was a black wood table with a massive pedestal and four legs, two matching armchairs that sat in the corners of the dining room, four side chairs with dark leather seats. The plate rail had hand painted plates with flowers and scenes are around the room. There was a carpet on floor. A set of Havilland china was in the cabinet. There was a silver plate coffee pot and tea set on the side board. A linen Damask tablecloth was on the table.
Kitchen:
The kitchen had a small wooden icebox until the late 1920’s when they won an electric refrigerator. The original stove was a wood burner on the east wall that was later replaced with a gas stove with a hood. The iron and ironing board were in the kitchen. Ed had to have bacon, eggs and biscuits every morning. There was an oil cloth table cover on this table during the day and a cloth cover put on for meals. A cast iron skillet always sat on the stove.
Hallway Upstairs:
There were pictures of Velma’s great grandmother and grandfather. They were in 2’ by 3’ oval frames that went from the waist up (one in each picture) and the hung on the east wall and a 2’ by 3’ oval filigree framed mirror. There was a mahogany shelf at the top of the stairs filled with Velma’s dolls.
The upstairs bathroom had a wooden wall hung toilet tank. There was a white porcelain sink, bathtub and linoleum on the floors.
The fireplace was used more in the master bedroom than the one in the living room.
Ed was a hunter. He and Mr. Steele bought a cabin in Tehachapi. Ed belonged to the Redondo Beach Rifle Club.
Allie was very active in church activities and belonged to the Baptist Church in Redondo Beach.
Lyman made the cedar chest in the Industrial Arts Class at Redondo Union High School that Velma donated to the Redondo Beach Historical Society to put back in the house. Allie made the afghan that was in the master bedroom and Velma also donated it to the Redondo Beach Historical Society.
The telephone was in the master bedroom closet. It was concealed there because it was installed by Ed’s brother-in-law, George Temple, who was the District Manager of Home Telephone.
There was a barn on the right side of the back yard. There was a clothesline on the left side of the yard. They raised chickens for food and eggs. They had a cow and kept it at the mill works plant. Ed brought home fresh milk daily.
In 1994 the lease was up on the mountain house which had Velma’s bedroom set. It is a birdseye maple set with a double bed, dresser with mirror and chest of drawers. She donated this set to the Redondo Beach Historical Society in 1994 and it is on display in the master bedroom. She also donated several chairs, braided rugs, couch, lawyer’s bookcase and family photos, which are all on display at the Morrell House.
The Morrell House was rented out from the time Ed and Allie moved to Santa Barbara in 1956. The house deteriorated over the next thirty years until it came close to the wrecking ball. In 1988 the Redondo Beach Historical Society started working with the owner of the house (who wanted to put condominiums on the property) and the City of Redondo Beach to have the house moved and renovated. The City had the house moved to its current location and volunteers worked on the restoration until completion in December 2004. All of the Morrell family furniture was moved into the house and the Society is continuing to furnish it with period pieces from the 1900’s to 1950’s to show how the house might have looked during the Morrell times.
