SonAndrew Johnson Bachman (b. 13 June 1882, d. 26 January 1955)
SonSamuel Bernard Bachman (b. 13 May 1884, d. 3 April 1914)

BASIC FACTS

Sarah Drake Stover was born on 27 June 1857 in Tennessee.1,2 She and William Bruce Bachman were married on 7 June 1881 in Knox Co., Tennessee.1,3 She died on 22 March 1886, at age 28, in Bluff City, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1 She was buried in National Cemetery, Greeneville, Greene Co., Tennessee.1
Sarah Drake Stover was also known as Mary Clare Stover.3 She had reference number 21122. She was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1860, 1880.)4 Mary Johnson, daughter of President Andrew Johnson, married Colonel Daniel Stover. (Colonel Stover was in charge of recruitment of the Fourth Tennessee Infantry.) Daniel and Mary (Johnson) Stover had three children, Andrew Johnson Stover, Eliza "Lillie" Stover and Sarah Drake Stover. Colonel Stover died of tuberculosis in 1864. Following his death, Mary (Johnson) Stover and her children moved to the White House to live with her father, then the 17th president of the United States. While president, Andrew Johnson purchased the Holston Cotton Factory in what was then called Zollicoffer (later called Union Depot and now called Bluff City). The business was intended to provide an income for Mary (Johnson) Stover and her family. In 1869 Mary moved to to Union Depot and built a large brick mansion that was named Stover Hall. Mary died in 1883 and Stover Hall appears to have passed to daughter Sarah Drake Stover and her husband, William Bruce Bachman. William and Sarah had two sons, Andrew Johnson Bachman and Samuel Bernard Bachman. The boys were young when Sarah died in 1886. Several years later Stover Hall burned to the ground but most of the contents (including the Johnson and Stover memorabilia) were saved.
In 1892, William married Lula May Peterson. Lula raised Sarah's two boys and four children of her own. In 1906, William and Lula built a smaller, albiet large home called "Long Shadows" on the site of Stover Hall. Sarah's two boys were given toy guns for their amusement. One day, when they were not being supervised, they used the large portraits of President Andrew Jackson and Colonel Daniel Stover as targets, damaging the portraits.
In 1965, Long Shadows was owned/occupied by William and Lula's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Bachman and her second husband, Herbert Payne Richards. Mary was then the caretaker of the Johnson-Stover memorabilia that had been passed down. Mary Elizabeth (Bachman) Houston-Richards never had children. In 2015, Long Shadows was owned by Betsy and Harvey Carrier.
