Their maternal grandmother, Bessie Grace (Ensminger) Kirkendall, lived in the household and was taking care of the two children. After Bessie's death (1931) her unmarried sister, Harriet Ensminger, came in to help, however, after an argument between their mother and her aunt, the siblings were placed in foster homes. Charles joined the Navy shorly after his 17th birthday. After high school, Caroline worked for a bank and then joined the Navy when she was 20 years old.
