Ronald Gregory Brett (1969-2012)
Ron Brett, a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and son, passed away in the presence of his family on June 29, 2012, after a valiant 3-1/2 year battle with colorectal cancer, a battle he fought courageously to win. Throughout his 42 years with us, he led an active and meaningful life and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Ron was born on December 14, 1969, in Eugene, OR. to Tom and Sandi Brett. He attended Coburg Elementary School and Cal Young Middle School and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1987. During his youth, he played many sports, including baseball and basketball, and became an addicted sports fan as a result. He went on to graduate from the University of Oregon (UO) with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. He left UO with more than just a degree - he became a lifelong Ducks football fan, supporter, and season ticket holder. He attended all the football games and bowl games along with family members, even though it required constant travel down to Eugene each fall.
In 1992 Ron moved to the greater Seattle area and ultimately launched a career in the real estate appraisal business, one that he resolutely continued on a full-time basis to within a few months of his passing. He met the love of his life, Katie Cook, and they married in June of 2006. They were blessed with fraternal twin daughters, Payton Elizabeth and Hayley Nicole in the fall of 2011.
Ron was an avid outdoorsman, immersing himself in snow skiing, water skiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and hiking and he shared these passions with most of his friends. Ron was also an accomplished big game hunter of blacktail deer, mule deer, antelope, and elk. His exploits left many freezers packed full of venison and jerky (his favorite).
Ron was unflinchingly honest and had an innate kindness that constantly manifested itself in charitable deeds. He was also a man of principle, never sacrificing them for any reason. He had an incredibly strong work ethic and was humble, giving, and selfless. He was almost humble to a fault, as he absolutely refused to talk about or view himself in a flattering manner, even though everyone else did. He was a man more of deeds than words - he didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk. Frequently he assisted family and friends in need, providing them with a place to stay and, on many occasions, financial assistance, and he never expected anything in return. Ron was a man of deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, loving and relying upon Him. He said that he didn't know the Lord's plans or reasons for his circumstances, but accepted them by faith.
Ron is survived by his wife, Katie Brett, of Newcastle, WA; daughters, Payton and Hayley, of Newcastle, WA; brother, Ryan Brett, of Bellevue, WA; sister, Wendy Nesland, of North Bend, WA; and parents, Tom and Sandi Brett, of Eugene, OR.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the Ballard Campus of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, WA. A reception will be held in Eugene, OR. at the First Baptist Church Garden Room at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. The church is located at 3550 Fox Meadow Road in Eugene (97408).
