Young Mother Strangles Baby
A hysterical 16-yearl-old mother last night apparently strangled her 16-day-old daughter to death and then tried to take her own life by slashing her wrists.
Police booked Mrs. Patricia Core of 6673 Arch Way on suspicion of murder at the County Detention Ward. They said she was out of danger and in good condition.
Investigating officers said they had not uncovered a motive for the sudden outburst on the mother's part.
She had been home from the Community Hospital only eight days.
Her husband, Floyd, a 23-year-old truck driver for the Shell Oil Co., said he was at a loss to explain what possessed his wife. They had always been happily married, he told police.
Core found his wife writhing in agony on the floor in the front room of their home when he returned home about 7 o'clock last night. When he found her she wasn't seriously hurt; he rushed to the bedroom and found his daughter dead on the bed.
Core told police he immediately phone the doctor and after the doctor had given Mrs. Core first aid and knew he could do nothing more for the baby he called the police.
Deputy Coroner Paul Miller investigated the case for the coroner's office.
Police said the investigation would continue.
