BASIC FACTS

Mary Myrtle "Myrtie" Sewell was born on 13 October 1885 in Missouri.6,7 She was born about 1886.8 She was born on 13 October 1887 in Missouri.9 She and Claude Samuel DaVault were married on 3 February 1904 in Pratt Co., Kansas.8 She died after 1952.10 She died on 29 August 1957, at age 71.6 She was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas.6
Mary Myrtle "Myrtie" Sewell had reference number 14929. She was enumerated on the census in Pratt County, Kansas (1910 - 1920, 1925.) Notwithstanding lots of published information to the contary, I believe that Mary Myrtle "Myrtie" (Sewell) Davault was the daughter of John Lundsford Sewell and Martha G. Nulty. Myrtie was raised from infancy by Mary Francis (Pope) Scantlin-Sewell. (See Mary Francis Pope's obituary below.) As such, Myrtie's birth year is probably closer to 1885 and not 1887 as suggested by a note left by Lizzie on Myrtie's Find-A-Grave memorial.

OBITUARY - Mary Francis (Pope) Scantlin-Sewell (Step-mother of Mary Myrtle "Myrtie" (Sewell) Davault); Pratt Daily Tribune; Pratt, Kansas; Saturday, February 26, 1921; Page 4 (Newspapers.com)

Obituary.
Mary Francis Pope was born in Gasconade County, Missouri, on September 11, 1858; and died at her home in Pratt, Kansas at 6:30 a. m. on February 23, 1921.
When eighteen years of age she was united in marriage to James Scantlin near Bland, Missouri. To this union two children were born, one of whom survives her, J. D. Scantlin of Tracy, Minnesota. Mr. Scantlin lived but a few years and in 1888 she was united in marriage with John L. Sewell at Bland, Missouri. To this union four sons were born, all of whom, together with the husband, survive her. The sons are George D. Sewell of Omaha, Nebraska; Roll S. Sewell of Pratt; Boley D. Sewell of Iowa, and Clarence E. Sewell of Kansas City, Missouri. Besides these she leaves to mourn her loss, a step-daughter, Mrs. Claude Davault of this city, whom she has reared from infancy. Mrs. Sewell also leaves five brothers, none of whom are residents of this city.
Mrs. Sewell joined the. Baptist church when she was but eighteen years of age and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pratt.
Mr. and Mrs. Sewell came to Kansas in 1899 and settled in Pratt county. They lived on a farm south of town for three years and the remainder of this time they have lived at their present residence at 609 South Oak Street.
Mrs. Sewell has been an invalid for a number of years but has borne her ill health with a jovial spirit which has made for her a large circle of friends.
Claude and Myrtle were married at her home by Willy K. Estill, Minister.

Made Money Trapping
Buehl and Cleo Davault, the two sons of Claude Davault being 14 and 16 years of age cleared $265.00 in six weeks of trapping this winter and did not miss any school while doing it. They caught Musk rats only. They used 25 traps and it required some grit to get up on cold mornings at 5 o'clock and make the rounds of the traps but it paid and the boys stuck to it.

GIRLS SEEK HOMES.
Ruth and Helen Davault, left Tuesday, accompanied by Frank Davault, for Holly, Colorado, near which place they will take up homesteads. Frank Davault will build two houses for the girls. It is their plans to remain on the claims seven months of the year. The two Pratt pioneers will not be alone as there are several persons near them, former residents of Pratt. The Misses Davault have been employes of the New Method Laundry, for some time. Miss Ruth had been book-keeper and Miss Helen bundle-wrapper. Their father is an employe of the Express company. They will endeavor to obtain employment at Holly, during their absence from the homesteads.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - The Pratt Daily Tribune; Pratt, Kansas; Thursday, December 4, 1919, Page 4 (Newspapers.com)

Sgt. Frank Davault arrived home the forepart of the week from Camp Gove, Florida. Sgt. Davault has just finished a three year term of enlistment in the army, having served seven months overseas. He will visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Davault and other relatives for the present. He intends making his home in Pratt but has not yet decided what line he will take up.

Note: I have some problems with the above newspaper article. It seems to suggest that Sgt. Frank Davault was not married in December of 1919 but our Valentine Franklin "Volly" DaVault, Jr. was married at that time.

BASIC FACTS

James Beal DaVault was born on 13 October 1921 in Missouri.5,4 He died on 12 June 1942, at age 20, in Gulf of Mexico.3 He died on 13 June 1943, at age 21, in Gulf of Mexico.6 He was buried in Lost at sea.
James Beal DaVault had reference number 14939. World War II; U.S. Navy; Seaman, First Class; 3423402.2,6 He was enumerated on the census in Pratt County, Kansas (1930, 1940.) He was a Laborer - mill and elevator (1940.)7 James was a U.S. Navy sailor serving as an Armed Guard on the tanker "S. S. Cities Service Toledo" during World War II. At 0750 on the morning of June 12, 1942 the unescorted Cities Service Toledo was torpedoed by U-158 20 miles east of the Trinity Shoal Light Buoy in the Gulf of Mexico, while she proceeded on a nonevasive course. Two torpedoes struck two seconds apart on the starboard side amidships in the #6 and #7 tanks. The tanker rapidly took a starboard list. Five minutes later two more torpedoes struck the starboard side about amidships at the #4 and #5 tanks, causing the tanker to burst into flames. The armed guards (the ship was armed with one 5in, two .50cal and two .30cal guns) stayed with the ship as long as possible and fired three rounds at a light thought to be the U-boat. Most of the eight officers, 28 crewmen and nine armed guards abandoned ship in two lifeboats, because all rafts and the two other lifeboats were destroyed. One of these lifeboats could not get clear the flames and the men had to jump in the water. The Cities Service Toledo sank about two hours after the second attack. The Norwegian motor tanker Belinda picked up the 17 men in the remaining lifeboat several hours later. Eight hours after the attack, the surviving 13 men in the water were picked up by the American steam tanker Gulfking and the Panamanian steam merchant San Antonio. All survivors landed at Burwood, Louisiana and were then sent to New Orleans, where four men were hospitalized. One officer, ten crewmen and four armed guards, including James Beal Davault, died in the attack.

James' name is listed on the East Coast WWII Memorial at Battery Park, Manhattan, New York Co., New York.

Two Fliers Killed in La. Plane Crash
PORT VINCENT, Jan. 16 AP. Searchers on horseback, guided by a circling state police plane, quickly reached a rain-soaked swamp area here today where two Kansas fliers were killed in a plane crash.
More than 75 state troopers, sheriff's deputies and farmers, beat through the isolated hardwood swampland all night in a heavy rain, after residents reported hearing the plane hit in the dark.
It sounded "just like two cars colliding head on on the highway," residents said.
The silver winged Ercoupe plunged into the forest about 20 miles southeast of Baton Rouge after circling half an hour at nightfall in the rain trying to locate itself.
State police headquarters in Baton Rouge identified the victims as:
William Buxon, Emporia, Kan.
R. F. DeVault, Pratt, Kan.
State Police Maj. Richard Cotter, who located the wreckage from the air about 2 ½ miles north of this Livingston Parish river community - said the front of the craft was demolished.
He saw the bodies and radioed the ground party.
An official at the airport in Emporia, said the two men, both employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, left Emporia in Buxon's small plane last Tuesday on a trip to Florida.
Buxon, about 27, was the pilot. The official said Buxon told him they planned to be gone about a week or 10 days.
Major Cotter said the dead pilot apparently was circling low under rain clouds when trees loomed in front of him and he tried too late to pull up to safety.
