PRATT LOSES GOOD CITIZEN IN DEATH OF YOUNG MAN
Hovey Templeman, well known in Pratt and a resident of this county for many years, died at the home of his wife's mother, Mrs. Fred Davault at 706 West Third Street, last Thursday morning.
Hovey had been afflicted with cancer for several months and although every known science in America was resorted to and the best of physicians of the land employed, the dread disease became unconquerable and after a long siege of suffering, the young man passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones who had remained so faithful to him through the long hours or suffering and pain.
OBITUARY - The Pratt Union; Pratt, Kansas; Wednesday, December 3, 1930; Page 3 (Newspapers.com)
William Hovey Templeman was born m Carroll county Mo., on Oct, 21, 1899 and died at Pratt, Kansas, on Nov. 27, 1930, aged 31 years, 1 month and 6 days.
He moved to Kingman with his parents in 1904 and then to Wellsford, Kansas in 1905 and to Pratt county in 1910.
He was baptized into the Church of Christ by Evangelist B. F. Martin in 1914 and has been an ardent and successful worker in that church up to the time of his death.
He was married on April 5, 1923 to Alma Grace Devault, eldest daughter of Mrs. Fred Davault of 706 West Third Street in this city. To this union three children were born, Claude William, 6 years of age; Alma Jean, 4 years of age and Barbara Ann 18 months of age.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Templeman and three children, one sister, Miss May Templeman of Wichita, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Fred Davault, five sisters-in-law and husbands as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lynch of Minneola, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Brehm of Pratt, Misses Opal, Margaret and Dorothy Davault and one brother-in-law, Homer Davault, all of whom have been tied together with Hovey in the bonds of love and affection as would his own blood relation be.
Many other relatives and friends mourn the loss of a sterling young gentleman and a noble Christian character.
Hovey was loved by all who knew him. His keen sense of right and good will to all surrounded him with warm friends wherever he went. His intimate and useful work with the church brought him great enjoyment in life. He had done so much for his wife's mother and her family who was left a widow several years ago and his work of love and devotion to them brought him many tokens of esteem from his friends who were close to him and knew of his labor of love.
His work, while as a young man, has been left for some one else to take up and complete. He has been a never lacking stay to the Church, to his family and those he loved. He had lived such a clean and devoted life that no one could lay the finger of scorn upon a tarnished spot of his character and this together with his devotion to all, made him fill a place in life that has been both valuable to the world and to his Church and family.
The Union extends the deepest sympathies of the entire force, to the bereaved ones. May they find consolation that their loss is also the loss of all who have known him but that no one could wish him back to again endure the suffering that was his in life.
The following verses were Hovey's motto in life and he used them in his church work too:
A careful man I ought to be,
A little fellow follows me ---
I do not dare to go astray
For fear he'll go the self-same way.
I cannot once escape his eyes,
Whate'er he sees me do he tries;
Like me he says he is going to be ---
The little chap that follows me.
He thinks that I am good and fine,
Believes in every word of mine;
The base in me he must not see ---
That little chap who follows me.
I must remember as I go
Thru summer's sun and winter's snow
I am building for the years to be ---
That little chap who follows me.
