BASIC FACTS

Samuel Harvey Davault was born in 1816 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1,6 He was born in 1817 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.7,6 He and Alvira Folley were married on 9 February 1837 in Red Bird, Gasconade Co., Missouri.1,8,7 He and Ruth Ann Blain were married on 28 January 1874 in Phelps Co., Missouri.1 He died on 9 April 1889, at age ~73, in Redbird, Gasconade Co., Missouri.1 He was buried in Scantlin Cemetery, Phelps Co., Missouri (V.)9
Samuel Harvey Davault had reference number 14754. He was a Farmer (1850, 1860, 1880), blacksmith, Justice of the Peace.1,3,4,5 He was enumerated on the census in Gasconade County, Missouri (1850, 1860, 1880.) Mrs. Ruth (Davault) Gibney provided much of the information on Samuel and his descendants. Here is what she had to say about her grandfather, Samuel Harvey Davault.
"Samuel was a farmer, a blacksmith, and a justice of the peace. At one time he owned over 1000 acres of land. Samuel was a good provider; he could raise anything. He built an ice house, had a blacksmith shop and did work for neighbors. His house was large with two fireplaces upstairs and two downstairs. My father said the family were Pennsylvania-Dutch. Samuel always walked to Hermann, county seat of Gasconade County, to pay his taxes. He carried a cane, was gone a week and visited along the way."

Note:
Hermann is sixteen miles from New Florence, Missouri where Samuel's cousin, Peter Davault, operated a tavern on the Boone's Lick Road. One wonders if Samuel ever walked the additional sixteen miles to visit his kin?
One also wonders why, if Samuel was so successful in life, he was buried with just a field stone to mark his grave. In any case, the situation was corrected in April of 1971 when Ruth's daughter, Margaret (Gibney) Van Patten, had a nice stone placed on his grave.

BASIC FACTS

Ruth Ann Blain was born on 1 April 1839 in Merrimac Iron Works, Crawford Co., Missouri.5,6,3,7 She was born in 1843.8 She and Benjamin Franklin Fallis were married on 7 September 1854 in Newburg, Laclede Co., Missouri.3 She and Samuel Harvey Davault were married on 28 January 1874 in Phelps Co., Missouri.1 She died on 19 January 1896, at age 56, in Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas.8,6 She was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas.8
Ruth Ann Blain had reference number 14756. She resided in Missouri, Texas, Missouri.2 She was enumerated on the census in Gasconade County, Missouri (1880.) Ruth and her first husband, Benjamin Franklin Fallis, moved from Missouri to Texas. They decided to move back to Missouri and he died on the way back. Sometime after she returned to Missouri, Ruth married Samuel Davault. Later Ruth's daughter from her first marriage, Adella Fallis, married Ruth's step-son, Volentine DaVault. Also, another of Ruth's step-sons, Thomas Davault, married her niece, Lucinda Blain.
In 1892, a few years after the death of Samuel, Ruth, her children, and two of her step-children, James Canny Davault and Volentine DaVault, moved from Missouri to Pratt County, Kansas. Ruth's daughter from her first marriage, Alice (Fallis) Scantlin, and her husband George may have been the first of Ruth's children to make the move. Margaret (Gibney) Van Patten, says her mother recalled that the family moved from Missouri to Kansas to get to a dryer climate.

Note: Herman Davault, a third step-child, had previously moved to the state of Washington where he operated a barge on the Columbia River. By 1895, Herman, too, had moved to Kansas.

BASIC FACTS

John Davault was born on 17 August 1818 in Tennessee.1 He and Mary Elizabeth Hutchison were married on 24 August 1843 in Crawford Co., Missouri.1,4 He died on 13 February 1879, at age 60.1 He was buried in Wash Cemetery, Phelps Co., Missouri (V.)5
John Davault had reference number 14757. He was a Farmer (1850, 1870.)2,3 He was enumerated on the census in Crawford County, Missouri (1850); Phelps County, Missouri (1870.) John's wife married Phillip Johnson after his death. She is buried in Wash Cemetery, next to John, as Mrs. Johnson. The Harrison Heritage says that Mary (Hutchison) Davault-Johnson had no children by either marriage. There is a genealogy prepared by Joy Hoyle Mayfield (hoylem@lightspeed.net) that says that John and Mary Davault had a daughter, Eliza, born about 1845. I have not found any evidence of this child. If John and Mary did have a child, she must have died young, as no child was mentioned in John's will in 1879.

BASIC FACTS

Mary Elizabeth Hutchison was born about 1817.1 She was born on 17 March 1823 in Tennessee.6,3 She and John Davault were married on 24 August 1843 in Crawford Co., Missouri.7,8 She and Phillip Johnson were married on 17 August 1880.9 She died on 7 April 1915, at age 92.6 She was buried in Wash Cemetery, Phelps Co., Missouri (V.)10
Mary Elizabeth Hutchison was also known as Elizabeth "Mary" Hutchison.7 She had reference number 14758. She was enumerated on the census in Crawford County, Missouri (1850); Phelps County, Missouri (1870, 1880, 1910.) She was a Farmer (1880.)5 Harrison Heritage Volume VI, No. 4, Page 763 December 1986

James Hutchison was born in Virginia in 1785, and Mary Gregory was born there December 23, 1786. They were married in Virginia, but nothing further is certainly known of their ancestry, or the date of their marriage. However, since the family names do not occur together in any other Virginia county, it is likely that they descended from the above families listed in Mecklenburg County.
James Hutchison and his wife must have left Virginia soon after their wedding, for they lived more than twenty years in Tennessee, and all their children were born there. Most of this time they lived in Greene County, which was also the home of Joseph Hutchison, another Maries County pioneer but no traceable relationship. If the family tradition is correct, Robartus was nine years old when they came here, then they arrived in 1834, for he was born in 1825. Their first land entry here, however, was in 1839, when James Hutchison entered land on the Boubeuse later for many years owned by A. T. Bullock, on which he likely made his home until his death on May 4, 1848. His widow followed him to the grave January 19, 1849. Both are buried in Rock Springs Cemetery. Of the eleven children born of this marriage, no record has been found for three, and they are thought to have died in infancy. The other eight were: Esther, William, James M., Martha, Mary E., John G., Robertus E., and Benjamin Hutchison. Esther was the first wife of Lewis Harrison, and her descendants are recorded under that name elsewhere in this chapter. Mary E. married first John Davault, and second Phillip Johnson; no children were born of either marriage. James M. moved to Lawrence County so many years ago that all connections with relatives here have been broken. Martha, who married a Blackwell, removed to Indian Territory about the same time. No list of the descendants of either of them has been obtained.

Rhoda "Rody" Davault had reference number 14764. She resided in Maries Co., Missouri; Clark Co., Missouri (1850.)1 She was enumerated on the census in Clark County, Missouri (1850.) In Mr. King's book of Maries County History he states that this family moved to Quincy, Illinois. Eve (Kinkeade) Bossert says that Rhoda's son Daniel and his children moved back to Missouri after Rhoda's death. At one time I thought Rhoda was buried in Scantlin Cemetery. I now believe that this is the grave of Daniel Mosher's second wife, Anna Allison. However, why would Daniel's second wife be buried with Rhoda's brother and other relatives?

Newland DeVault, in his genealogy, missed the fact that Daniel Mosier was married twice. He attributed all the children to Daniel's first wife, Rhoda Davault. Daniel and Rhoda (Rody) are shown in the 1850 Census for Clark County, Missouri with three children. In the 1860 Census, Daniel and his second wife are shown in Lewis County, Missouri. Living with Daniel and his second wife are Daniel's three children by Rhoda and his first two children by Anna Allison. My guess is that Rhoda either died in Clark County, Missouri or Lewis County, Missouri. By 1870, Daniel and his family had moved to Maries County, Missouri.

He was a Farmer (1850 - 1880); school teacher; County Superintendent of Schools.2,8,3,4,5 He resided in Had a farm on homesteaded land about two miles southeast of High Gate, Maries Co., Missouri.8 He was enumerated on the census in Clark County, Missouri (1850); Lewis County, Missouri (1860); Maries County, Missouri (1870, 1880, 1900.) Daniel Price Mosher, one of the early High Gate, Missouri settlers, is buried at Bowles Chapel Cemetery. We are told that the parents, an uncle and several children came from France through Holland to the U.S.A. and settled in the state of New York, where the entire family was wiped out with Cholera excepting Daniel and three of his brothers. All four headed west with one stopping in Kentucky, one in Iowa, one to California, and Daniel to High Gate, Missouri.

There is a story that has been handed down in the Mosier family through the years. It is told that when the homestead grants of land in the High Gate area were being issued, Daniel Mosher rode all night on his mule to Linn, Missouri to be the first in line. He arrived ahead of Louis Allison to get his choice of land to file on. However, this created hard feelings to the point that occassionally, thereafter, a few pot shots were known to have been taken, but no one was ever hit.

Even though Daniel's stone says he died in 1898, he is shown living with his son, James D. Mosher in the 1900 Census.

DANIEL
MOSHER
1817 -- 1898.
Dorsie Mosher lists two children under James Newton and Sarah Ellen "Ellen" (Mosher) Williams: John W. Williams and Mary Jane Williams. In the 1870 Census, James and Sarah were living with her father and step-mother. In this census, the last two children listed for Daniel and Anna Mosher are John W. Mosher and Mary Jane Mosier. The birthdates for these two Mosher children pretty much match the dates that Dorsie gives for John W. Williams and Mary Jane Williams. (This gets more complicated as John W. Mosher later morphed into Sterling Price Mosher.) In the 1880 Census, James N. and Sarah Ellen (Mosher) Williams are shown with one child: Mary Jane Williams. It is my guess that John W. Mosher (aka Sterling Price Mosher) and John W. Williams are one and the same. Also, that Mary Jane Mosher and Mary Jane Williams are one and the same. I have decided to show John W. Williams (aka Sterling Price Mosher) as a son of Daniel and Anna. I have also decided to show Mary Jane Williams as the daughter of James Newton Williams and Sarah Ellen Mosher. This is due in part to the 1880 Census and in part due to the 1910 Census where Sarah says she has had on child and that child is still living.

BASIC FACTS

John Kinkeade was born on 10 November 1828 in Missouri.2,3 He and Julina Davault were married on 17 August 1848 in Crawford Co., Missouri.1,4 He died between 1852 and 1853.5
John Kinkeade had reference number 14768. The following is from Eve (Kinkeade) Bossert's genealogy of the Kinkeade family"
"The story of John Kinkeade is as sad as that of his brother James, but he was not forced to go to war. I have a discharge for John Kinkeade form Capt. E. H. Shepards Co. A, Missouri Volunteers, but I do not believe it is our John because of the age given (32). This John was enrolled May 8, 1847 and discharged Aug 20, 1848. Uncle Herman told me that Julina was given a pension because of his service but I have never been able to find her pension application. At any rate he and Julina were married Aug. 17, and the discharge record gives his being separated on Aug. 20 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The facts just don't agree"

Later in the genealogy Eve adds the following:
"This is a good time to finish the story of John Kinkeade's trip to the goldmines. My cousin Rae Freise told me that the ones who made this trip met and embarked from LeDuc Church. I do not know how long they were gone or how successful any of them were, but John sent Julina a ten dollar gold piece. There is some indication of foul play on the way home, at least the family had their suspicions aroused by story told to them by a man, believed to be a relative, that Uncle Herman called Sabbthic Glenn. I believe his name was Tobathic. We will never know!"
