Mary is listed as Sarah DeVault on the death certificate of her daughter, Mary Callie (Anderson) Cox. Several genealogies and the History of Maries County (Chapter 57) say that children Theodocia E. Southard and Walter Welmington Southard actually belong to William B. Southard and his third wife, Rebecca Deatherage. Rebecca's stone says she died in 1863. The birthdates of Theodocia and William are after 1863 and so I have listed them as children of Mary Davault.

William B. Southard1,2,3
M, #14503, b. 10 December 1814, d. 6 June 1881
Parents
BASIC FACTS
William B. Southard was born on 10 December 1814 in North Carolina.1,2 He and Elinor or Eleanor John were married before 1837 in McMinn Co., Tennessee. He and Catherine Frost were married on 12 October 1837 in McMinn Co., Tennessee. He and Rebecca M. Deatherage were married on 12 October 1839 in McMinn Co., Tennessee. He and Mary Davault were married between August 1863 and November 1864. He died on 6 June 1881, at age 66, in Maries Co., Missouri.1 He was buried in Southard Cemetery, Maries Co., Missouri (V.)4 William B. Southard had reference number 14771. He resided in North Carolina, Tennessee (1828), Maries Co., Missouri (1839-1840.)5 He was a Farmer (1870, 1880.)2,3 He was enumerated on the census in Maries County, Missouri (1870, 1880.) In May of 1864, William Southard was administrator of the estate of James G. Anderson. By November of 1864, he had married James' widow, Mary (Davault) Anderson, and they, as husband and wife, sold 160 acres of land to Archibald Jones. (This information is from the genealogy compiled by Eve Fern (Kinkeade) Bossert.)
SKETCH OF WILLIAM B. SOUTHARD (from Internet)
William B. Southard holds the proud distinction of having sired more children (to be tied only by his nephew Edward Franklin) than any other member of this family tree - thirteen in all. Having had difficulties with keeping a wife (he buried three) he was finally able to sustain his fourth to finish off a long, "productive" life in 1881.
William was approximately ten years of age when his parents, Gilliam and Rebecca Southard, relocated from Orange County to McMinn County, Tennessee. It was here in McMinn County that William spent most of his youth and where he met his first wife, Elinor John. Together they had one child in 1837. Why Elinor died at such a young age is unknown; however, being that William married again that same year of 1837 leads us to believe that Elinor died during childbirth. It can only then be assumed that William married again, quickly, as he sought a mother for his newborn daughter.
William married Catherine Frost in December of 1837, only to see her pass away the following year. Apparently William had fine features as he had no difficulty in finding a new wife (or wives.) He married again the following year, this time to a woman that would be by his side for nearly thirty years. Rebecca (Detherage) John had lost her husband, William John, to an untimely death and married William Southard in October of 1839. This was four years prior to William, along with his father, brothers and sisters, having moved to present-day Maries County, Missouri.
Rebecca gave William nine children before her death in 1868, which was probably brought on by her last birth. William married again the following year to Mary (Davault) Anderson, a widower, who gave William three more offspring.
William died several years after his youngest was born, at the age of 67. William was laid to rest in Southard Cemetery in Maries County.
Note: Rebecca (Detherage) John-Southard died in 1863 (not 1868 as stated in the above biography). This means that Rebecca had two less children and Mary (Davault) Anderson-Southard had two more then are stated in the biography.

Mrs. Dirlam Dies at Soldiers' Home
Mrs. M. J. Dirlam, who has been an inmate of the Soldiers' Home for several years, died early Tuesday morning surrounded by her closest relatives, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 26 days.
Her maiden name was Matilda J. Bowen. She was born March 3rd, 1845, on a farm on Jake Prairie. She married John Davault in 1859, and during the CIvil War she suffered many trials and hardships from the fact that her people were Southern sympathizers, while her husband was a soldier in the Union Army.
Five children were born to them, three of them dying in infancy, and the only daughter dying at the age of 30, after having become the wife of W. J. Gorman. W. E. Davault is the only survivor of the family. His home is in a suburb of Chicago, and he was here in time to be with his mother in her last hours.
After the war Mr. and Mrs. Davault lived in Gasconade county, near Red Bird, until about 1873, then bought a farm on Lane's Prairie, where they lived about five years, when they moved to St. James, where the husband soon became identified with the political and industrial affairs of the town, and was recognized as an enthusiastic and active member of the lodge of Odd Fellows.
They later became inmates of the Federal Soldiers' Home at this place, August 16, 1903, Mr. Davault having served as private in Co. I, 124th Ill. Inf. He died January 16, 1916. Six years after their admittance into the home they celebrated their golden wedding, but in a cottage they were occupying at the time while on furlough.
In June, 1919, Mrs. Davault married Chas. S. Durlam, and after a short leave was readmitted with her husband.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of the Home, and was very inpressive and largely attended. A delegation on General Noble Circle of the ladies of the G. A. R. of which Mrs. Dirlam was a member went through the funeral rites of their order. These elderly ladies all appeared in snowy white and the ceremony was very pleasing.
A large number of autos were in waiting to convey the assembly to the burying ground which was the beautiful necropolis of the Masons. There the prodigality displayed in the wealth of beautiful floral tributes attested the esteem in which the departed was held by her many relatives and friends.
CARD OF THANKS
We desire to thank through these columns all we cannot thank in person for the acts of kindness done and the words of sympathy extended to us in the hour of our bereavment and for the flowers sent in friendly remembrance of our dear relative, Mrs. M. J. Dirlam, when her spirit had taken its flight.

Note: Matilda married Charles S. Dirlam on June 18, 1919 in Phelps County, Missouri.

OBITUARY - Saint James Leader-Journal, June 1, 1900
Mrs. Fanny Devault Gorman, after a most painfull and distressing illness of ten months, peacefully passed away on Saturday, May 26, 1900.
She was born in Maries county on the 26th day of February, 1870, and was married to William J. Gorman, at the bride's home, in the presence of near relatives on Nov. 27, 1889.
Although everything possible known to the medical preofession was ministered and human sympathy had spent itself in vain, the physicians were forced to the the awful verdict that she must die. Long and trying had been her sickness, and a change for the better would inspire hope in the hearts of anxious watchers, until finally the summons came and her voice was stilled in death.
The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church by Rev. John C. Sanue.
She had been a consecrated member of the Baptist church for several years, and during her illness would calmly talk to her heavenly home beyond the shores of this life. Relatives and anxiious friends were about her bedside, and to them she had a parting word. Calm as in the midst of vigorous life, she spoke of her departure to a beautiful land beyond the sun, and it was a well known fact by all who were present that this was a happy death-bed scene. She leaves a devoted father and mother, a loving husband, one brother and two sons and one daughter aged respectively 8, 6 and 2 years to mourn her demise.
Sorrowing friends joined the cortege in its march to the grave in the Masonic cemetery, and there, beneath the sod on which were placed sweet flowers, the tribute of sad hearts, we left her knowing that in heaven there is rest for her. A. FRIEND.

OBITUARY - St James Journal, St. James, Missouri, October 16, 1903
Mrs. Jacob Devault died at her home at Broadway, Saturday night, Oct. 10, 1903, after a lingering illness, at the age of about 62 years. Mrs. Devault was well known throughout that portion of Maries county, where she had been a resident for many years. The funeral was held Monday. Interment at Rock Springs graveyard. To those who are left to mourn her taking away, the deepest sympathy is extended them in their breavement.
Note: I think the reference to the Rock Springs Cemetery is incorrect. Most of this family is in the Southard Cemetery, including a stone for Sarah. However, we do have some DeVault relatives in the Rock Springs Cemetery near High Gate.

BASIC FACTS
William Robert Davault was born on 13 April 1862 in Vichy, Maries Co., Missouri.1,3 He and Martha Victoria "Victoria" Cox were married on 27 November 1889 in Phelps Co., Missouri.6 He and Minnie Glenn were married on 2 October 1911 in Phelps Co., Missouri.6 He died on 4 December 1925, at age 63, in Johnson Twp., Maries Co., Missouri.7 He died on 10 December 1925, at age 63.1 He was buried in Southard Cemetery, Maries Co., Missouri (V.)8 William Robert Davault had reference number 14782. He was enumerated on the census in Maries County, Missouri (1870, 1900, 1920.) He was a Farmer - general farming (1900, 1920); farmer (death certificate.)7,4,5 HARRY V. MARTIN
In late 2019 I became involved with an investigation that led to the conclusion that William Robert Davault fathered a son by the name of Harry V. Martin. Below I will attempt to explain how the investigation unfolded and how I came to the conclusion that Harry V. Martin's parents were William Robert Davault and Martha Victoria Cox.
The investigation started when I was contacted by Sheridan Marie (Pugh) Lucas. Sheridan was trying to learn more about her step-father's father, Harry V. Martin. Even this brief introduction requires some explaining. Sheridan was raised from birth by Carroll Rodney "Cal" Chacon-Martin-Pugh (1927 - 2008) and Rosemary Pater (1928 - 2019). Late in life Sheridan learned that Carroll Pugh was not her biological father. He was, however, the only father she had ever known.
Carroll Pugh was told by his mother, Jessie Marie (Chacon) Pugh-Eubanks, that his biological father was Harry V. Martin. Jessie also gave Carroll a photo of his father in a military uniform. On the back of the photo was a note, apparently written by Jessie that said, "Corp Serg Harry V. Martin, 15 Co, Fort Mills, Philippines Islands." Sometime after Sheridan's father (Carroll Rodney Pugh, Sr.) passed away, she set out to learn what she could about his biological father, Harry V. Martin. Her investigations were mainly in two areas: 1) She contacted the National Archives to learn what she could about Harry V. Martin from the existing military records, and 2) She had her half-brother, Howard Alan Pugh, a biological son of Carroll, Sr. and Rosemary Pater, submit his DNA to several sites.
I became involved when Sheridan received the results from Howard Pugh's Y-DNA test from the company, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). I had previously had my Y-DNA analyzed by FTDNA. The results that Sheridan received showed that both Howard and I have almost identical Y-DNA. Sheridan contacted me wanting to know how Howard and I were related.
I suggested to Sheridan that she have Howard's autosomal DNA tested by Ancestry.com. That test revealed a number of things. but, most importantly, it revealed that Howard was a close relative of Aubrey Bruce Davault. Based on the amounts of shared DNA and the approximate birthdate of Harry V. Martin, I deduced that Harry V. Martin was a biological son of William Robert Davault (1862 - 1925).
I first assumed that Harry V. Martin was the issue of an out-of-wedlock relationship, possibly after Martha Victoria (Cox) Davault passed away. However, further analysis of Howard Pugh's Ancestry.com DNA matches showed that Howard was biologically related to a number of people that were descendants of Martha Victoria Cox's parents. These people, all biologically related to Howard Pugh, appeared to have no Davault DNA. Based on the amounts of shared DNA I was led to the conclusion that Harry V. Martin was a son of both William Robert Davault and Martha Victoria Cox. I surmised that Harry may have been adopted out due to Victoria's very ill health. (She died of tuberculosis not long after Harry V. Martin was born.)
Further review of Howard Pugh's Ancestry.com DNA Match List showed several more people that biologically are descendants of William Robert Davault but that had not previously been identified by traditional genealogical research methods. These people include Meg Stengele, half sisters Sue Hoyt and Pat Hee, Craig Erickson and Chris Dance.

OBITUARY - Saint James Leader-Journal, December 18, 1925
William Robert Davault, better known as W. R. Davault, was born April 13, 1862, in Gasconade County, Missouri. When yet a small boy he moved with his parents to what is known as the Uncle Jake Davault place northwest of Broadway.
On October 27, 1889, he was married to Victoria Cox, and then moved to what is known as the Dora Gates place where he resided the remainder of his life. To this union were born four children: Rainey of Red Bird; Wm. J., of St. Louis; Effie of St. Louis; and Dorsey Davault, all of whom survive him. His wife, Victoria, prededed him in death in 1904, leaving the future of the four children to the care of the loving father, who bore the trial faithfull and reared the children until his second marriage to Mrs. Minnie Southard on Oct. 2, 1912, who from that time shared the trials with him. To this last union two children were born: Clarence, now 12 years of age and Anneta, 7 years of age, both of whom survive him with their dear mother.
Mr. Davault was a strong, robust man all of his life up to February 1925 when he began ailing, but being of a strong constitution he bore the trials with much resolution until death overtook him the 4th day of December, 1925.
His remains were laid to rest by the Modern Woodman Lodge in Southard Cemetery - Dec 6th.

Red Bird Community Center Plants Stricken Farmer's Corn
12 Neighbors Plow Sow, 17 Acres On Arthur Davault Farm
When Arthur Davault of Red Bird was stricken with the mumps recently, he was confronted with the problem of getting his 17 acres plowed and planted with corn. To his rescue come the Red Bird Community Center, Inc., a non-profit organization striving for the betterment of the community.
Twelve men from the Red Bird area gathered at Davault's farm early one morning, with 10 tractors and a truck. They immediately set to work to get the 17 acres divided into smaller plots, plowed and planted before the ground became too dry and Davault's hopes of a corn crop ruined. The tractors plowed and prepared the ground for planting and then planted the seed, with the seed corn and fertilizer being carried by the truck.
At noon, the meal was prepared and served by the lady members of the Community Center organization. Other ladies unable to attend also sent covered dishes. This was another of the helpful projects of the organization. After the meal, the 12 men finished the task, which took about a whole day.
The Community Center, Inc., was organized in march of this year and was given a grant as a corporation. The old Red Bird School building was purchased by the Red Bird Ladies' Club and donated to the organization and it was then converted into a community center. Officers elected for the first year were: Tom Lacy, president; Bruce Zulauf, vice-president; Albert Spurgeon, secretary-treasurer; Artie Scheel, and Thomas Bowen, directors.
The Red Bird Community Center is an example of community progress, goodwill and helpfulness. No one knows this better than Arthur Davault.

DAVAULT, SAMUEL
A Popular Young School Teacher Is Dead. Samuel Davault departed this life September 9, 1900, being cut down in the prime of his life, being only 32 years of age. In this as in many other cases we see that death has no respect for persons. Those who are in the track of the destroyer must yield to his power, whether they be young or old. All men prepare for life but how few prepare for death. Mr. Davault never made any public profession of religion, but many times in conversation with the writer he has remarked I have great faith in God and His promises are sufficient. He was born in Maries county April 16, 1868, and was the second son of Jacob and Sarah Davault. He was one of the most prominent school teachers in Crawford county and had followed that profession for over ten years. At all times he was a man of kind heart and excellent judgment and loved by acquaintance, and the many expressions of sympathy on his untimely death warmly attests the strong friendships held by him in his life. About four weeks ago he fell down stairs, which caused malarial fever, followed by cancer of the spleen, which finally resulted in death. His death will be most widely felt as he was a most intelligent, useful and valuable citizen. With a mind perfectly clear and a faith admitting of no doubt, he peacefully fell asleep. To his widowed mother, brothers, and sisters we kindly say you are left to travel the balance of life's journey alone, but rest assured your parting will not be long. You shall meet again where there will be no more sad farewells and where all tears will be forever wiped away.-G. S. McIntosh.
