DaughterLillian Mae or Matilda "Lillie" Davault+ (b. 28 June 1884, d. 12 January 1965)

BASIC FACTS

Josephine Shuey was born on 23 December 1860 in Missouri.2,6,7 She died on 28 July 1946, at age 85, in St. James, Phelps Co., Missouri.6,7 She was buried in Saint James Masonic Cemetery, Saint James, Phelps Co., Missouri.6
Josephine Shuey was also known as Josephine Shewey.8 She had reference number 20478. She was enumerated on the census in Franklin County, Missouri (1880); Phelps County, Missouri (1900); Gasconade County, Missouri (1910); Missouri, Saint Louis County, Missouri (1920); Phelps County, Missouri (1930.) Josephine's death certificate says her father was Dan Shuey. I could not find any record of a Dan Shuey living any where near near where Josephine was born. Several genealogies show Josephine's parents as John Shuey and Deborah Unknown. I suspect this information comes from the 1870 Census that shows Josephine living with John and Deborah. They appear to be too old to be Josephine's parents and were probably her grandparents. We also have good census records for John and Deborah Shuey for the 1850 and 1860 census years. John and Deborah did not have a son named "Dan." The only son they had was James Monroe Shuey. What follows is pure speculation. I do not think that James Monoe Shuey was Josephine's father. I suspect that Josephine was born, probably out of wedlock, to one of John's and Deborah's daughters.
