BASIC FACTS
William Hicks Giesler was born on 13 October 1843 in Bluff City, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.2 He and Mary Catherine Akard were married on 17 June 1865 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He died on 2 March 1911, at age 67, in Jefferson Co., Alabama.6 He died on 10 March 1911, at age 67.2 William Hicks Giesler had reference number 27724. He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Virginia (1870); Bullock County, Alabama (1880); Hale County, Alabama (1900.) He was a Sullivan County, Tennessee Superintendent of Schools (1875 - 1879); teacher (1880, 1900.)7,4,5 Civil War, Rank: First Sergeant, Enlisted: 8 July 1861 (see notes.) From the genealogy of Andrew Tomczeszyn:
William H. Giesler is referred to by the surviving Gieslers as Uncle Will, as he was the oldest of the children of Jacob Giesler II and Clementine Hicks.
He was a teacher at the Jefferson Acadamy. Jefferson Academy was established in 1806 by the state legislature in Blountville and was the first institute of higher learning in the county. William taught there after the Civil War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 at age 17. He achieved the rank of First Sergeant in Co. K, 26th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. His regiment was captured in the battle of Fort Donelson on the Tennessee River, and he was held prisoner near Indianapolis for some months and released in Vicksburg Miss. in Sept 1862. The service records indicated that he was wounded in the hand and side at the battle in Murfreesboro TN, and was allowed to return home to recuperate. His unit was paroled at Greensboro NC on May 1, 1865. He was superintendent of schools for Sullivan County from 1875-1879. His salary was fixed at $300.00 per year. He asked for a raise but the motion failed to pass the school board. On 1 Jan. 1877 the court fixed the salary of the superintendent at $200.00 per year plus $1.00 for each qualified teacher in the district. Mr Giesler was again elected superintendent, but failed to serve the full term.
There is a family story (not proved) that he managed to get control of Jacob and Clementine's property either before or after their deaths, and moved away, possibly to Alabama, where he became well known as an educator. The county land records show property transfers, but some of the deeds were executed by him to his parents and vice versa, so the story is probably hearsay. Another story is told that he arranged for private school tuition for Susam Emeline Giesler "Aunt Emma", the oldest child of Daniel Samuel Giesler, as she showed particular promise.
In an affidavit for a Veteran's pension,Willam Dulaney Harkleroad related that when the war ended he and William H.Giesler had been given leave to go home, and to return with any horses that could be rounded up. They learned that Lee had surrended before they got home, so they both continued on home and never returned to their unit. In 1910 he filed an affidavit in Jefferson Co. AL to enable W. D. Harkleroad to receive his Civil War veteran's pension.
Note: Census records show that after Mary Catherine's death, William remarried and moved to Alabama where he continued his teaching career. In the 1880 Census, William and wife, Beulah Unknown, were shown living in Midway, Bullock County Alabama. By 1900 he was married to Lula Unknown. They were living in Greensboro, Hale County, Alabama. The children of William and Mary Catherine (Akard) Giesler were raised by William's parents, Jacob and Clementine (Hicks) Giesler. More: son, James David Giesler and second wife, Beulah are buried in the Greensboro Cemetery, Greensboro, Hale Co., Alabama.

Exactly 50 years to the day, Kathleen and David Akard St. will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary Tuesday night with a “swinging” shindig at the Bristol Country Club.
None other than the Tommy Dorsey Band, popular when the Akards were wed on Tuesday morning, June 23, 1931, will be playing the hit tunes of the 30s era for the dinner dance celebration.
They’ll whoop it up from 8 to 12 p.m. at the party, given by the Akard offspring and their spouses – Kitty and her husband Jerry Watford, Louise and her husband James Bowdoin, and David Jr. and his wife Melinda. The celebration will encompass the entire clubhouse, which will be adorned with golden yellow flowers and lavender tablecloths.
Lavender is Mrs. Akard’s trademark, her “claim to her fame,” according to members of the family. She had decorated her home entirely in lavender and to feel at home Tuesday night, will dine on a lavender covered table.
Expected to attend the festivities will be about 400 guests of the 485 invited, notably the Kings.
Also expected to attend are the Akard’s eldest grandchild, Leslie, Kitty and Jerry’s 25-year-old daughter in Atlanta; their youngest grandchildren, David and Melinda’s seven-year-old twins, David and Bambi; Kathleen’s baby sister, Charlotte (Mrs. Forrest) Berens of Marietta, Ga. and her baby brother, E. F. Willis, Jr. of Bristol Tennessee.
Congressman Jimmy Quillen, who must remain in Washington, D.C., and Senator Carl Moore, who’s in Europe, sent their regrets.
The festivities will begin with a brunch at David and Melinda’s home on Brookwood Drive for out-of-town guests and family.
The children say their parents met in high school, but were not allowed to tie the knot until Kathleen finished college. Parents had some say-so in those days. At the age of 17, Kathleen received her secretarial diploma at Sullins college in May 1931 and the couple married in June.
Kathleen is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Frank Willis formerly of Lindsay Street and David Sr. is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Akard formerly of 111 Moore St.
According to a faded newspaper clipping in the couple’s wedding album, announcing the nuptials, “the entire lower floor of the Willis home was thrown en suite and adorned with baskets of exquisite garden flowers. Before an impromptu altar of early summer blossoms and palms, the wedding ritual was read by Rev. S. C. Ballentine of the Lutheran Church.
“Following the wedding, an elaborate breakfast was served.
“The pre-nuptial music was rendered by Miss Lucille Hayworth, gowned in lavender chiffon with picture hat and John Saunders. Mr. Saunders played ‘Traumeri’ and Miss Hayworth soloist sang ‘I Love You Truly.’ Mr. Saunders played “To A Wild Rose’ and for the processional, the “Bridal Chorus’ from Lohengrin.
“Miss Helen Mainous was maid of honor and wore a costume of green organdie, beruffled, with pink chapeau and carried an arm bouquet of garden flowers.
“Little Miss Frances Carter, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. She wore a quaint frock of yellow dotted Swiss and carried the flowers in a petite flower girls basket.
“Mr. Allen Pendleton was the ring bearer. He carried the ring in the heart of a white lily.
“The lovely bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a costume of white net over white taffeta, the taffeta being flowered with pink roses and a large pink hat most becoming to her brunette beauty, white shoes and lace mitts. She carried a chatelaine bouquet of sweetpeas, bride’s roses and swansonia, showered.
“Mr. Haskell Weaver served Mr. Akard as best man.
“Mr. and Mrs. Akard left during the morning in their car for a bridal trip but did not announce their destination. They will be away for two weeks. Upon their return they will be at home with Mr. Akard’s parents on the Blountville Pike.
“Mrs. Akard is a young woman of most charming personality with a wide circle of friends in Bristol. She was graduated in June from Sullins College and is also a graduate from Virginia High School. In both schools, she was most popular.
“Mr. Akard is associated with his father in the firm of Blevins Akard Undertakers.
“Mr. and Mrs. Akard will be at home to their friends at their residence on the Blountville Road.”
Another newspaper clipping from the wedding album noted a stag party given the groom, hosted by W.M. Hoover and Haskel Weaver. Before dinner, the guests enjoyed “a swim in the pool… and after dinner, bridge was played.” The couple’s engagement announcement said the approaching wedding was “of much interest to the legion of friends of the attractive bride-to-be and Mr. Akard.”
The couple had their first child (Kitty) when Kathleen was 18 years old. Hope that’s not telling her age!
Natives of Bristol, Kathleen and David Sr. have always lived here, as have their children. His father, J.B. co-founded Blevins Akard Undertakers on Moore St. After Blevins and Akard split, David Sr., at the tender age of 19, took the reins of Akard Funeral Home Inc. which had moved to James St.
David Jr. became president of Akard Funeral Home eight years ago, but David Sr. and Kathleen remain as active in the family business as they have throughout their marriage.
