BASIC FACTS

Prudence "Prudy" Davalt was born in 1838 in Darke Co., Ohio.7 She was born on 5 October 1838 in Crawford Co., Missouri.8 She was born in October 1839 in Missouri.9 She and George C. DeVault were married on 25 March 1858.1 She and Lawrence Leonard "Old Man" Dyer were married about 1909.10 She died on 27 June 1917, at age 78, in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., Missouri.10,11 She died on 27 June 1919, at age 80, in Poplar Bluffs, Butler Co., Missouri.12 She was buried in Marble Hill Cemetery, Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., Missouri.10
Prudence "Prudy" Davalt was also known as Prudy. She had reference number 14873. She resided in Crawford Co., Missouri; Saint Francisville, Clark Co., Missouri; Roscoe Twp., Davis Co., Iowa; Dart Co., Ohio; Poplar Bluffs, Butler Co., Missouri.3,2,10 She was enumerated on the census in Palo Alto County, Iowa (1900); Butler County, Missouri (1910.)12 Prudence's first husband, George DeVault, was originally from Ohio. He came to Missouri where he met and married Prudence Davalt. They returned to Ohio where their first two children were born. Then they moved to Missouri and eventually to Iowa. When George died he was buried in Norwalk Cemetery, Warren County, Iowa with the Parker side of the family.* George's and Prudence's son James, James' wife Gertrude and one of James' and Gertrude's sons are also buried in Norwalk Cemetery.
Eighteen years after George died Prudence married Lawrence "Old Man" Dyer. They lived in Poplar Bluffs, Butler Co., Missouri. In the summer of 2002, Peggy (Cassady) Harris, her sister Linda (Pillow) Bilek and their mom, Lucille Marilyn "Lou" (Parker) Cassady-Pillow, visited Marbel Hill Cemetery. They could not find Prudence's grave (most of the graves are unmarked). Prudence's granddaughter, Nora Leona "Leona" (Peterson) Parker, said that it would have cost $10.00 to bury Prudence within the town limits of Poplar Bluffs, but her second husband, Old Man Dyer, saved money by burying her on the outskirts of town. Leona obviously resented how Old Man Dyer had buried her grandmother.

* George's granddaughter, Nora Leona "Leona" Peterson, married a Parker.

BASIC FACTS

Jane "Jennie" Medley was born about 1860 in Missouri.8 She was born in 1862.9 She was born in February 1863 in Missouri.10 She and James Canny Davault were married in 1883.2,10,11 She died on 13 December 1946 in Kansas.9,4 She was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas.9
Jane "Jennie" Medley had reference number 14875. She resided in of Redbird, Gasconade Co., Missouri.1 She was a Servant (1880.)2 She was enumerated on the census in Gasconade County, Missouri (1880, 1900); Pratt County, Kansas (1915, 1920, 1925.) Jane's birth year is variously shown between 1860 and 1863.

Several trees on Ancestry.com show Jane Medley, wife of James Canny Davault, as Nancy Jane Medley, daughter of Milton Medley and Martha Ann Keller. This is incorrect. In the 1880 Census for Gasconade County, Missouri our Jane Medley was listed as a servant living with the Samuel Harvey Davault family. In the 1880 Census for Dallas County, Missouri (Dallas County is over a hundred miles from Gasconade County), Nancy Jane Medley, daughter of Milton and Martha Ann (Keller) Medley, was shown living with her parents and family. In September of 1880, still in Dallas County, Missouri, Nancy Jane Medley married Elizah (probably Elijah) H. Stephen.
In August of 2019 I decided to revisit the problem of determining the real parents of Jane "Jennie" (Medley) Davault. After consulting Cathy (Crabtree) Cook and Donald Boyd, Don provided the clue that was crucial to solving the problem. Don noticed that in the 1880 Census the family of Jesse Paul Medley was living next door to the Samuel Harvey Davault family. Also living with the Jesse Paul Medley family was Sarah Medley who was listed as a cousin of Jesse. Based on their ages, Don suggested that our Jane (Medley) Davault was either a sister or a cousin of Jesse Paul Medley. This turned out to be correct.
Jessie Paul Medley's parents were Daniel Robert Medley (1813 – 1886) and Catherine Null. A examination of Daniel and Catherine's children showed that they indeed had a daughter named Jane but her birth year (1855) seemed to rule her out.
The next step was to try to determine if Jane (Medley) Davault was a cousin of Jessie Paul Medley. Daniel Robert Medley’s parents were James A. Medley (1760 – 1849) and Sarah E. Smith [Find-A-Grave and Genealogy prepared by mrmedley1951 (Ancestry.com)]. James and Sarah Medley had five children as follows [from mrmedley1951’s tree]: Joseph Allen Medley, Thomas Medley, Daniel Robert Medley, Mahala Medley and Jesse A. Medley. After checking the other male children I ended up checking the last one, Jesse A. Medley (1826 – aft. 1880). Jesse A. Medley married second, Rachel Elizabeth Jones. They had eight children [from various sources but primarily the 1870 and 1880 Census records]: Sarah (b. ~1859) [This turned out to be cousin Sarah living with the Jesse Paul Medley family in the 1880 Census.], Jane (b. ~1860) [This turned out to be our Jane "Jennie" (Medley) Davault.], Joseph (b. ~1866), James (b. ~1867), Henry (b. ~1869), Nellie (b. ~1873), Susan (B. ~1878) and George (b. ~1880).
Looking for some final confirmation, I ended up with daughter Nellie who married John Ruben Sorrell and died 21 Nov 1945 in Missouri. Her obituary below confirms that Jane Medley, daughter of Jesse A. Medley and Rachel Elizabeth Jones is indeed our Jane "Jennie" (Medley) Davault.

OBITUARY - Nellie (Medley) Sorrell (sister of Jane "Jennie" (Medley) Davault); The Bland Courier; Bland, Missouri; Thursday, November 29, 1945; Page 1 (Newspapers.com)

MRS. RICHARD SORRELL DIES NEAR RED BIRD
Mrs. Nellie Sorrell (nee Medley), wife of Richard Sorrell died Nov. 21 near Red Bird, a the age of 70 years. Leaves besides her husband one daughter, Mrs. Clara Rhodes, 2 grand children and I great-grandchild; 1 sister, Mrs. Jane Devault of Pratt, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Sorrell had been married 53 years. Mrs. Sorrell united with Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in her girl hood days and lived most of her life in and near Red Bird. She will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held November 23 at the Red Bird Church and burial in Bowen Cemetery. Services by Brother Creth Mitchem.

Note: I do not know why the obituary lists Nellie's husband and Richard Sorrell. Nellie is buried in Bowen Cemetery and shares a headstone with John Ruben Sorrell.

In Memory of Jean Dee DeVault March 25, 1925 - February 9, 2015
Auburn-haired Jean Dee (Frazier) DeVault was born in Jamestown, North Dakota to Edith and John Frazier on March 25, 1925. She was a responsible girl – so much so, that according to her younger brother [John] Paul, when sent on an errand to the store with the instructions "to not stop and mess around, to go directly to the store and back," when her brother was hit by a car while crossing the street, Jean completed the shopping task and toted home the groceries sans the little brother. When asked by her Auntie Mary about Paul's whereabouts, Jean replied, "He's going to be fine, he's on his way to the hospital!"
The family moved to Aberdeen, WA for a short while before settling in northeast Portland, Oregon where Jean attended Rose City Park Elementary and graduated from Grant High School, class of '43.
Jean met her husband-to-be when her Aunt Mary brought him home for dinner. Her Aunt who volunteered at the USO Club, regularly invited military personnel for dinner in their home or transported them about town. She saw a pair of uniformed men waiting at a bus stop and while driving them to the Portland Army Air base, she invited them to Sunday supper. Roy, an Army Air Corpsman immediately was taken by the genuineness of the family, their laughter and most certainly enjoyed Jean's company. They were married June 9, 1946, Jean worked briefly in the Kaiser Shipyards as a riveter while they lived temporarily in Vanport before moving to their first home in Parkrose on Freemont Court.
Jean and Roy welcomed their first child, Nancy in 1948 and purchased property and house plans with the intention to build their home themselves. David was born in 1953 completing the family and they moved to their home on Eugene Court three years later.
Jean was an attentive wife, devoted mother, the consummate homemaker - well-known for her cooking, delectable potato salad and beautiful pies. She found deep satisfaction in caring for her children, assisting her Mother and Great Aunt, helping her neighbors and working in her yard. Jean was an avid and powerful bowler, and once her children were raised, she and a friend had a part-time painting and wallpapering business.
Jean was exceptionally wicked at playing Scrabble and doing crossword puzzles; she was as artistic as she was articulate. She had a great sense of humor and could be an imp at times – when a neighbor asked her to shorten his slacks, she made the requested repair and then basted the back pockets and the ankles closed; when the unsuspecting man attempted to don his trousers he could not get his foot through the bottom, nearly falling on the floor trying to force his foot through the leg of his trousers. Of course, once he figured that out, he had a great laugh and was tricked again when he attempted to put his wallet in his back pocket and discovered it closed as well!
At the time of her passing, Jean resided at Summerplace Assisted Living in northeast Portland, OR.
Jean is survived by her loving children, Nancy and her husband Terry Pettit of Vancouver, Washington, her son David DeVault and his wife Karen of Nehalem, Oregon, three grandchildren, Becky Pettit Renfro and her husband Christopher of Vancouver, WA, Chad DeVault of Beaverton, OR, and Amy DeVault Smith and her husband Bryan of Carbondale, CO, seven great grandchildren, Nick and Jake Renfro, Trevor, Cody and Kyialynn DeVault, and Milo and Mina Smith.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband Roy DeVault and her brother John Paul Frazier.
At her request, there will be no memorial service, "please remember me as you knew me." In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Alzheimer's Association of Portland, Oregon or to the Children's Cancer Society of Oregon.
Private inurnment at Rose City Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
