Eliza J. Minnick had reference number 15022. She was enumerated on the census in Scott County, Virginia (1850 - 1870); Sullivan County, Tennessee (1880, 1900, 1920.) Eliza appears as a child in the 1850 and 1860 Census records for Scott County Virginia. The head of the household is Mary Minnick. In the 1870 Census she is living with her younger brother, Joseph Minnick and his family. In Eliza' marriage record to Michael Weaver Davault, it lists her parents as Henry and Polly. On Eliza's brother's death certificate (Joseph Minnick) it says his father was Joseph Minnick. Eliza's mother is variously listed as Mary/Polly Devault/Duvault. As far as I can tell, Mary is not related to our Tennessee Davaults/DeVaults.

MARY DEVAULT MINNICK of Scott Co. VA, b.ca 1800, By Jean Casper February 28, 2005 at 01:44:45
I am trying to learn more about Mary Devault Minnich/Minnick who was in Scott Co., VA in the 1850 census at age 51. It shows her with her children Sarah Ann (my gg grandmother who married John Wesley Necessary of Scott Co.), 17 yrs., Eliza J., 14, Edmond, 12, and Joseph, age 11. Mary's husband was Henry Minnick. I do not have any information on him either. Sarah Ann (b. 1833 in Scott Co.) and John Wesley Necessary named one of their sons John Devault. The census shows Mary born in Va. I would like to find Mary's line.Any help would be appreciated.

Mrs. Summers came to California in 1880 and to Kern Co. in 1888, first settling in Calleta Hills, later moved with her husband to the Old River district where she lived until her death. He and Julia returned to California by train shortly after they were married. They first lived in San Luis Obispo Co., later moved to eastern Oregon and finally returned to California. They settled on a homestead a few miles from Bakersfield, south of the Taft Oil Fields. It was still a relatively new country and Nora and her sisters often played in an old Indian burial ground, collecting beads, arrowheads, etc. In 1900 they moved down the valley about 12 miles south of Bakersfield on a farm. In later years they moved to town and operated a grocery store.

Alice Odessa Sample1,2,3,4
F, #14773, b. 11 March 1856, d. 18 March 1938
BASIC FACTS
Alice Odessa Sample was born on 11 March 1856 in Iowa.3 She and Jacob I. "Jake" Davalt were married on 21 December 1878 in Cantril, Van Buren Co., Iowa.1 She died on 18 March 1938, at age 82, in Sayre, Beckham Co., Oklahoma.1 She was buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Beckham Co., Oklahoma.3 Alice Odessa Sample was also known as Alice Odessa Samples. She had reference number 15041. She was enumerated on the census in Beckham County, Oklahoma (1920.) Had glaucoma.3 There have been a number of people that have tried to identify Alice's parents. One tree shows John Sample (no trailing "s") and Rachel Stark as possible parents. John married Rachel in 1842. They seem to have had six children. Rachel died in 1860. John married Mary Smith (daughter of Levi Smith and Jane Stroud) in 1862. They went on to have five children of their own. Alice's obituary says that two of John and Mary's children are her half-siblings. One might think that Alice was a daughter of John Sample and Rachel Stark, but wait, Alice, born in 1856, does not appear with John and Rachel in the 1860 Census nor does she appear with John and Mary in the 1870 Census. What does this all mean? It turns out that an Alice, born about 1855, shows up in the 1860 Census with the family of Levi and Jane (Stroud) Smith. Alice is clearly a misfit here. All of Levi and Jane's children were born in Pennsylvania, Alice was born in Iowa. Also, it appears from the census, that the next older child is 14 years older than Alice. Finally, also shown in the 1860 Census record for the Levi Smith family is Mary Smith, age 27. In the 1870 Census, Mary Smith is now married to John Sample and they have four children of their own. Alice Smith is still shown living with the Levi Smith family. So here is what I think happened. Alice was an out-of-wedlock child born to Mary Smith. When Mary married John Sample, Alice remained with her grandparents. Eventually, Alice adopted her mother's married name with an added trailing "s".
