INVESTIGATION INTO VERNON'S HALF-SISTER
In October 2018, I contacted Dorothy Jean (Ahner) Bricker. Among other things she asked me to investigate some sketchy information she had on her father's half-sister. This is what I was able to come up with.
Vernon's father was Ernest Paul Ahner. He was first married to Effie E. Kalka. Effie’s parents were John Frederick Kalka and Susie Lingo. Effie was born on 8 Oct 1899 in Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma. She married Ernest Paul Ahner on 20 February 1918. Effie died just eight months later on 10 Oct 1918. I’m sure she died as a result of childbirth. Effie is buried in the New Zion Cemetery, Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma. Ernest and Effie’s daughter, Elnora C. Ahner was born on 5 Oct 1918 (just five days before her mother died). Elnora, Vernon’s half-sister, was raised by Effie’s parents. She was shown living with them in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. Elnora C. Ahner was first married to Henry C. Griswold. I believe this to be Henry Chauncey Griswold (1913 – 1990). They had a daughter, Myra Lou Griswold, born 15 Aug 1940 in Tryon, Lincoln County, Oklahoma. Elnora C. Ahner married second, Lee C. Brown on 7 Aug 1953 in Kern County, California. (Elnora used her maiden name on the marriage record.) Elnora died in January of 1986. She was living in Kenai, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska at the time. Lee also died in 1986. Lee and Elnora (her name is spelled “Elenora” on her stone) are buried in Spruce Grove Memorial Park, Kasilof, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska. Lee’s obituary is shown below:
Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Tuesday, November 25, 1986
Services for Lee "Brownie" C. Brown, 67, will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Kenai at the Peninsula Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Byran McCord of the Bahai faith officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.
Mr. Brown died Nov. 21, in his Anchorage home.
Born in Pawhuska, Okla., Oct. 26, 1919, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and had served in Europe.
Mr. Brown came to Alaska in 1957 and worked in the fledgling oil industry. He was on the first discovery well at Swanson River when oil was struck.
Due to poor health, he quit the oilfields and went to work as a custodian for Sears Elementary School in Kenai. He retired several years ago.
He loved to fish, play pinochle and watch Little League baseball games.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Elnora C. Brown. After she died in January, he moved to Anchorage to live with his stepdaughter.
He leaves his stepdaughter, Myra Hooper of Anchorage; two brothers, Charles H. Brown of Norman, Okla., and Herman Brown of New Mexico; one sister, Mabel Parkinson of Tulsa, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be directed to the Soldotna Girls Softball League.
Burial will be in the Kasiloff Cemetery.
Service arrangements by the Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Bragaw Chapel in Anchorage, and Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
Myra Lou Griswold married Garrard Paul Hooper. She died on 5 Jun 1996. Myra was in the U.S. Navy and is buried in Fort Richardson National Cemetery, Fort Richardson, Anchorage Borough, Alaska. Myra’s obituary is shown below:
Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Saturday, June 8, 1996
Longtime Alaska resident Myra Lou Hooper, 55, died of a sudden illness June 5, 1996, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. today followed by a funeral at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel with the Rev. Chris Reinke officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Garrett, Vernon and Taggart Hooper, Ben Moyer, Carl Fleetwood,
Larry Taylor and Lloyd Johnson.
Mrs. Hooper was born Aug. 15, 1940, in Agra, Okla., and had resided in Alaska since June 1957, living in Soldotna from 1957 to 1965, and in Anchorage since 1965.
Mrs. Hooper had worked in the Wendler Junior High School lunchroom during the mid-1970s and was a member of Women of the Moose. She loved doing arts and crafts and spending time with family and friends. She spent winters in Kingsville, Texas.
The family said: ''Everyone she met became a friend for life. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.''
Mrs. Hooper is survived by her husband, Garrard of Anchorage; sons, Garrett and Taggart of Anchorage and Vernon and Ted of Seattle; daughter-in-law, Sabra of Anchorage; granddaughter, Cami; nieces, Sheri and Alyse; nephew-in-law, Roy; uncle, Don Garrett of Ohio; sisters, Molly Soto of Denver and Pat Micheals of Arkansas; aunt and uncle, Marquita and Gradro Brown of Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Jean Aberle of Soldotna; and many other relatives and friends.
Myra’s son, Vernon Paul Hooper, died in 2002 in California.
