OBITUARY - Find-A-Grave

Our beloved father, Jim "Pates" Paton, 68, passed away January 1, 2012 in Spokane surrounded by family and friends.
Jim was born in Seattle, Washington in 1943 to William and Eleanor Paton(Haskins). After his family relocated to Spokane, he attended Finch Elementary and Havermale Jr. High and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1961. Jim participated in many high school sports and extra-curricular activities including football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, clansmen club, drama and band. He received the MVP player award, was captain of the football team and the All-City football team and was the student body vice president for his class. Jim attended Washington State University where he played football and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduating in 1965, Jim played football for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Seattle Rangers and Columbia Lions of the Pacific Football League and Canadian Football League from 1965 - 1968. Jim's teaching and coaching career began in the Highline School District. In 1970 Jim returned to Spokane and began coaching and teaching at his Alma mater, Shadle Park High School. He coached football, wrestling and J.V. baseball at Shadle for seven years and was named the head baseball coach at Rogers High School in 1977. Jim also coached football and many summer leagues while at Shadle and Rogers. Jim strived for improvements and "firsts" in the baseball programs he led, always for the benefit of his players. Many of his players have said that he was a true inspiration and viewed him as a father figure. Jim took All-Star teams abroad to Australia, China and Russia and his players visited places such as Cooperstown Hall of Fame, Alaska, Florida, Louisiana and California. Jim continued coaching and teaching for 25 years, and after retirement remained active in youth sports for many years. Although he lived with Parkinson's Disease for more than 30 years, he never let it hold him back from what he wanted to accomplish. He achieved in maintaining a positive outlook on life and never lost footing in his passion for baseball and athleticism. Jim loved anything sports related and was a superior athlete on many fronts. In addition to his football career, he achieved a black belt in karate, ran thirteen marathons and was a triathlon competitor. He loved to dance, attend or watch any sporting event and carried an adventurous spirit into every aspect of his life – there wasn't anything Jim wouldn't do or try. Jim also deeply cherished his friendships and seemed to be the ringleader amongst his friends. During the later years of his life, Jim also enjoyed spending time with his three granddaughters. Jim had a gift for organizing manpower and raising funds to support causes he truly believed in. This could be seen, and was highly recognized, in the baseball and sports programs he led as well as in his actions as an advocate for Parkinson's. Jim received many honors and recognitions during his lifetime including the 1986 Washington State Baseball Coach of the Year, inducted into the Washington State Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988, received the SGMA (Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association) Heroes Award in 1995, received the Spokane County Volunteer of the Year Award in 1991 for his contributions to youth sports and was listed in the Spokesman-Review in 1997 as one of the greatest stars to wear crimson and gray for WSU. Jim also initiated the All-Star Feeder games for Spokane and hosted the baseball All-State game for years.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Eleanor Paton and brother William "Billy" Paton.
He is survived by his daughters Polly Maxwell and Emmy Wise, their husbands Shawn Maxwell and Trent Wise, and his granddaughters Peyton Maxwell, Madelyn Maxwell and Lilian Wise.
He is also survived by his sister Cheryl Liedke and her husband Don Liedke.
A scholarship fund has been established in his honor to carry on his dream to provide opportunities to youth throughout the Spokane Community.
Contributions may be made to the Paton Memorial Baseball Scholarship Fund, c/o Wash.Trust Bank, 27 E. Indiana, Spokane, WA 99207.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 14th at 1 p.m. in the Shadle Park High School's Auditorium. Dad...you were truly one-of-a-kind… Happy Homeruns.
