Lafayette P. Smith, who died at his home in Palmyra, Tuesday, November 28, was born in Scottville township, Nov. 2, 1852. He acquired his education in the common schools of Illinois and Missouri. After concluding his early education he accepted a clerkship in a store in Missouri. Afterwards he returned to Illinois and for a time worked at Nilwood, later going to Girard, where he was a clerk for the R.J. Walker Grain company for a few years. In 1881 he went to Palmyra and for at time was employed as a book-keeper for the Duncan, Richie & Mahan Lumber company. He held this until 1885, when he became cashier at the Bank of Palmyra, holding this position until 1892. In this latter year he was admitted to partnership in the firm, having acquired a one-third interest in this establishment. Following the death of D.N. Solomon in 1900, Mr. Smith was elected president of the bank. Mr. Smith was also interested in farming pursuits and was at the time of his death owner of 180 acres of fine land. He was a feeder of cattle and hogs and at this was most successful. February 26, 1879, deceased was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Duncan, of Girard. To their union five children were born, namely: J.A., of Palmyra; Mabel Davidson, of Mount Auburn, Ill.; Laura B. James, of Belton, Texas; Ethel C. Lakin, of Fort Scott, Kansas; and Byron Smith, at home. Mr. Smith had for many years been a valued and hard working member of the Baptist church, of Palmyra. He was a member of the Palmyra lodge, no. 463, A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Modern Woodmen. In politics he was a Democrat. Mr. Smith was a dependable man under all circumstances. The simple weight of his sterling character and ability carried him into important business relations with a large part of the people of Palmyra and vicinity. His death is a distinct loss to the community where he had so long resided. Funeral services were held Thursday for (sic) the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Williams, of Alton, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. Johnson. Interment was to Oak Hill cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic lodge.
