Johnson City - A US Army officer, son-in-law of the director of The Johnson City Mental Health Center, was killed in South Viet Nam Wednesday.
Capt. Alvin K. Broyles, Jr. who had been in Viet Nam only three months, was one of two American officers who died as a result of "hostile action while accompanying a Vietnamese patrol," according to a telegram from the Defense Department received here by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin K. Broyles, Sr., Sunset Drive.
Broyles' widow, Mrs. Margie Broyles, 2700 Crestland Dr., is the daughter of Dr. C. M. Creech, director of the mental health center here. She gave birth to a girl, their third child, only last week.
Broyles entered the Army after graduation from East Tennessee Slate University. He had been in the service about nine years.
United Press International reported from Saigon Wednesday that Broyles and another officer were killed and another officer was wounded in a clash with Communist Viet Cong guerrillas about 80 miles south of that city.
The other officer was identified as Capt. Victor B. Kelly of Tucson, Ariz. husband of Patricia H. Kelley. Both he and Broyles were advisors to the South Vietnamese Army.
The wounded officer suffered only minor injuries. He was treated and returned to duty, according to the UPI report.
The advisors were accompanying South Vietnamese Army troops which made contact with a Viet Cong company near Vinh Long.
One of the officers - not identified by UPI - was seriously wounded during heavy fighting with the guerrillas. An amored troop carrier went into the area in an attempt to rescue the wounded American, but it was driven off by enemy fire.
One of the wounded man's companions organized a force of ground troops to drive their way into the area and rescue the officer. The American officer who was leading the rescue force, who was also not identified, was killed in the rescue attempt.
Later, it was learned, the wounded officer had also died.

In Tennessee William had grist mill, farm and store; in his spare time he was a carpenter and cabinet maker. In 1882 the family (children aged 7-22) left for Albert Lea, Minnesota where Ruble kin were established; then went on straight west to Dakota Territory (McCook County) where they bought what has since proved to be choice land, and on 800 acres they made a new home. They could have survived financially and prospered in spite of hazards of climate, prairie fires and pests, but they could not survive William having been a Confederate soldier in a northern community. A group of neighbors, aided by a "Shyster" lawyer found an "error" in the title and the DeWald's lost everything. In the meantime their son, Henry, had gone farther west to Canyonville, Douglas County, Oregon, where Tennessee relatives (John Kitzmiller and daughters Eliza (Kitzmiller) Hughes and Kate (Kitzmiller) Manning) had settled and pronounced the prospects "good." In 1890, William Valentine and the family with exception of two eldest sons moved to Canyonville and the Umpqua Valley, and soon after that to Cottage Grove where they had a fine home and a grocery store the last 15 years of their lives.
