Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home
Arthur "Pete" M. Ward, 77, of Eltopia died November 4, 2006, in Richland, WA. Art, along with his identical twin William, was born December 15, 1928, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Howard and Alvira (DeWald) Ward. His early preschool years were spent in South Dakota. In the mid-1930s, his family moved to a farm near Days Creek, Oregon where he, his brothers and sister spent countless hours playing in the creek and nearby woods. In 1956, he meet school teacher Mary Donnelly at the annual Prune Pickers Ball in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and they were married August 17, 1957, in Ray, North Dakota. They returned to Oregon where Arthur worked in the logging industry as a choke-setter and Mary taught school. When his name was drawn to choose a farm in the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project in 1958, he was absolutely overjoyed. In the spring of 1959, he and Mary began farming Unit 135 in Block 14, near Eltopia. They, along with their new neighbors (which soon became life-long friends), made the desert bloom with crops such as wheat, corn, beans, asparagus and alfalfa.
Art felt his greatest professional accomplishment as a farmer was developing two sealed gravity based irrigation systems, which eliminated the need for electric pumps, reduced erosion and evaporation, and were virtually maintenance free. These systems have irrigated over 300 acres for almost 40 years.
Art was an avid sports fan. He loved and knew about all types of sports, from horse racing to swimming, boxing to gymnastics. Although he often cheered for the Seahawks, his life-long favorite team was the San Francisco 49ers. He also loved to go fishing for steelhead at Ringgold and a good game of cards.
Survivors include his wife; Mary, daughters; Sarah, Angela, Bridget, and Kathleen, sons; Michael, Martin, and Peter, grandchildren; Lauren, Clay, Austin, Jeremy, Zachary, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Megan, brothers; James and William and sister; Alice and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Recitation of the Rosary will be Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. at Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home at 1608 W. Court Street in Pasco, WA.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 14181 Glade North Road, Eltopia, WA, Friday, November 10, 2006, at 10:00 a.m.
