Mary Marcille Donnelly Ward, 80, of Eltopia, died December 1, 2007.
Mary was born on November 24, 1927, in Williston, North Dakota, to John and Alice (McGown) Donnelly.
She grew up in Ray, North Dakota. Mary graduated from high school in 1945 and was class valedictorian.
In 1947, she graduated from Mount Marty College in Yanktown, South Dakota, with an associate's degree in elementary education. She enjoyed her teaching career and taught school in North Dakota, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
In 1956, she met logger Arthur Ward at the annual Prune Pickers Ball in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and they were married August 17, 1957, in Ray, North Dakota.
They returned to Oregon where Mary taught school and Art worked in the woods.
In the spring of 1959, Mary and Art began farming Unit 135, in Block 14 near Eltopia. Over the next decades, Mary was active in the daily operations of the farm. Feeding livestock, trapping gophers, balancing the books, there was no limit to her farm management skills.
Mary will be most remembered as a loving mother, adoring grandmother and for her devotion to her faith. Though she had seven children, she took time to help each develop his or her special interests and talents.
Through her example of study and hard work, she instilled a solid work ethic among her children. Mary took great joy in all the entertaining conversations and antics of her precocious grandchildren as well.
As one of the initial members of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Parish in Eltopia, she assisted in developing her faith community by lending a hand with church dinners, landscaping, writing church bulletins and attending Mass and devotionals.
Mary was an avid do-it-yourselfer. She loved to garden and enjoyed sewing quilts.
She loved to read all types of literature; poetry, novels, biographies; her reading interests were unlimited.
During her senior years, one of her most cherished activities was meeting with her monthly book club. She loved all creatures great and small and nursed many a motherless kitty back to health.
Survivors include daughters, Sarah, Angela, Bridget and Kathleen; sons, Michael, Martin and Peter; grandchildren, Lauren, Clay, Austin, Jeremy, Zachary, Margaret, Elizabeth and Megan and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers, Bernard, Hugh and Jerome.
Recitation of the rosary will be Thursday, December 6, 2007, at 7 p.m. with a viewing being held from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, December 7, 2007, from 9 a.m. to time of service at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 14181 North Road, Eltopia, WA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the same location at 10 a.m.

Entered the USN-SeaBees in Sept-l943, boot camp at Williamsburg, Virginia, advanced training at Okland, California. Spent 22 months in the Pacific at Hawaii, Tinian, and Eniwetok. Discharged in Dec-1945, worked in Los Angeles for almost two years, entered South Dakota State University in l947 and was graduated in l949. Taught Vocational Agriculture for three years at Parker, South Dakota, three years at Monroe, South Dakota, 2 years as school representative for Successful Farming Magazine, was a partner in a Purina Feed business and raised broilers (5000 at a time), and in l959 started working for DeKalb AgResearch, Inc as District Sales Manager at Watertown, South Dakota for 23 years. After retiring was DeKalb dealer in the Watertown and Florence, South Dakota areas until l990.
OBITUARY
Clive E. DeWald, age 91, of Watertown, S.D., passed away on Friday, July 1, 2011 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church at 4 2nd Ave. S.E. in Watertown. The Reverend Joel Higgins will officiate. Music will be furnished by Don Seim, soloist and Lesa Dahl, organist. Military honors will be conducted by the Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion. There will be no visitation.
The family requests memorials to be designated to the Alzheimers Association.
Honorary Urnbearers will be all his grandchildren.
Clive Edwin DeWald was born on June 20, 1920 to Earl and Nina (Charnock) DeWald in Sioux Falls, S.D. He graduated from high school in Valley Springs, S.D. in 1938. Clive attended college at Sioux Falls, S.D. He was in the C.C.C. in Custer, S.D. from 1939-1940.
Clive married Ethel Stanley on August 26, 1941 at Valley Springs, S.D. and they lived in California. He worked at Lockheed Aircraft in the experimental department, building the P-80 and also on P-38's. Clive served in the U.S. Naval Sea Bees during World War II in the Pacific Theatre on Tinian and Eniwetok Atoll from 1943-1945.
Later he returned to South Dakota and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1949. Clive taught Vo. Ag. in Parker High School and Monroe High School until 1958. He was District Manager for DeKalb Seeds for 23 years for 13 counties in northeast South Dakota. After he retired Clive and Ethel spent the winters in Arizona for 20 years.
Clive was a very active member of First United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for the city and the hospital. He was also a member of the American Legion and Masons.
He enjoyed hunting, sailing, gardening and woodworking, and making macrame' chairs. He was also active in a variety of different sports.
Clive is survived by his wife, Ethel; his three sons and two daughters: Ed (Judy) DeWald of Wilsonville, Oregon, Jerry (Judie) DeWald, Cheri (Bruce) Erlandson and Yvonne (Ken) Nigg all of Watertown, South Dakota, and Earl "Val" (Becky Johnson) DeWald of Redmond, Washington; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his brother, Earl C. (Mildred) DeWald of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters-in-law, Irene Williamson of Hartley, Iowa, Pearl Lemkuil of Sacramento, California and Beatrice Powers of Primghar, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Sean DeWald; and his brother, Charles DeWald.
