Searchers seek boy near Palomar
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The search for a 10-year-old boy missing for more than 24 hours in sub-freezing temperatures on Mount Palomar was called off Sunday night because of darkness, a San Diego County sheriff's spokesman said.
More than 100 persons, including a county helicoptor team, scoured the mountain's 4,500-foot level in cold rain in search of James Beveridge of Spring Valley.
The boy reportedly became lost Saturday after a hike with his two brothers. The three were on a camping trip in Doane Valley, an area located on the west side of the mountain.

Heavy Rains Drench Southern California
By The Associated press
As a storm drenched Southern California for the second straight day, rescuers searched rugged Mount Palomar today - pummeled by heavy rains - for a 9-year-old boy missing on a weekend hike.
There were no reports of major flooding, but caution remained for those living near canyon areas stripped of vegetation by last fall's brushfires.
Young James Beveridge, 9, of Escondido had been hiking Saturday on Mount Palomar when he became separated from his brothers. He was wearing tennis shoes and a down jacket, his brothers said, as temperatures dipped below 40 degrees in the mountains overnight.
Searchers including the boy's step-father, Escondido police Sgt. Larry Beveridge, continued their efforts in a driving rain today.

Missing Boy's body is found; hunt goes on for lost searcher
ESCONDIDO (AP) -- A hiker Wednesday found the body of Jimmy Beveridge, a 9-year old boy lost five days near the freezing rain swept summit of Palomar Mountain.
But the largest search in San Diego-area history pressed on for a man who disappeared Sunday while trying to find the boy.
The boy's death lowered hopes for Eric Enell, a retired San Diego police captain with high blood pressure. A friend of both said Enell was the boy's godfather who "wanted to go out and hunt although the family begged him not to."
Enell, 44, joined the father, San Diego police Sgt. Larry Beveridge a day after Jimmy bacame lost while racing Saturday along a mountain trail with his two brothers.
A storm that hit that night lasted almost four days, shrouding the 6,126-foot mountain in heavy fog and rain. Nighttime temperatures dipped to freezing.
Supervising Coroner's Deputy S. J. Thomas said the boy's identity was confirmed but no cause of death was fixed as yet. The boy's parents, who view the body, observed their wedding anniversary Wednesday.
A ski Jacket and tennis shoe worn by the boy were found Tuesday afternoon.
The youngster's body, clad only in a white T-shirt, socks and denim pants, was found in a heavily wooded area by William Thompson, hiking alone within two miles of the base camp. It was less than a mile from where young Beveridge was reported lost.
His parents and brothers stayed in their motorhome near the search command post. Their home is in Spring Valley, near San Diego about 50 miles south.
A detachment of 120 Marines from Camp Pendleton joined the search Tuesday, expanding it to 225 men.
Although the temperatures dipped to almost 30 at night, the persistent fog lifted, allowing a helicopter with spotters to fly.
A search coordinator said 24 highly trained trackers, "about the best around," hunted all night.

Note: Eric John Enell, Jr. apparently survived the search. He died in 2007.

OBITUARY - Evening Tribune; San Diego; California Wednesday, November 13, 1985

For four years Robert Beveridge tried to cope with the guilt he felt because he had left his younger brother Jimmy alone one cold, cloudy February day while hiking on Palomar Mountain.
"Robbie always felt that if he had not left Jimmy behind Jimmy wouldn't have become lost and died," his brother Rick said today.
"After Robbie was married about six months ago, he changed. He was so happy with his job and because his wife was pregnant and they were starting a family of their own."
Yesterday, 21-year-old Robert Beveridge was on his route as a mail handler for Home Federal Savings and Loan Association when the Toyota truck he was driving ran through a puddle of water in the westbound lanes of the 9000 block of Balboa Avenue.
The coroner's office said the truck went out of control and crashed into a tree at 11:10 a.m. Beveridge suffered massive internal chest injuries, said a report by deputy coroner Dan Matticks. Beveridge was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital and died there at 3:03 p.m. "It doesn't make sense," Rick Beveridge said. "It's so hard to believe."
In early February of 1981, the ordeal of 9-year-old Jimmy Beveridge captured the attention of thousands here who hoped that more than 200 volunteers searching for the boy would find him on the mountain that during that week was shrouded by thick fog and pelted by rain. But after a four-day search, Jimmy was found dead from exposure and exhaustion. He was wearing a T-shirt, green denim trousers and socks. His jacket and one sneaker were found about a mile away. Rick Beveridge said Robbie, Jimmy and their 6-year-old brother, Jeff, were hiking near their Palomar Mountain camp site when their father, Larry, called them for lunch.
"Robbie and Jeff ran and left Jimmy behind," Beveridge said. "When he went back to look for Jimmy, he wasn't there. They were close and he always blamed himself."
As a result of Jimmy's tragedy, the Beveridge family established Hug A Tree, a program in which youngsters are trained in wilderness survival.
Robert Beveridge was born in San Diego County. He was a graduate of Mount Miguel High School.
"His life had always been hard," Rick Beveridge said. "He was born with double pneumonia ... and after Jimmy died, Robbie and dad went on a fishing trip to Baja (California). Robbie contracted some kind of virus that caused a hole in his heart. He spent nearly a year in the hospital."
The heart condition disqualified Robert Beveridge from joining the Air Force, Rick Beveridge said. "He was very disappointed. He had planned to go into computers for the Air Force. It was just another setback."
Robert Beveridge is also survived by his wife, Michele; his father, Larry of Spring Valley, his mother, Barbara of San Diego, his stepmother, Jackie of Spring Valley; his brother Jeff of Spring Valley; two sisters, Rene Beveridge and Randee Beveridge, both of El Cajon; his paternal grandparents, Leonard and Arlene Beveridge of Chula Vista, his maternal grandparents, Evans and Ariel Clary of La Mesa; and his step-grandparents, Robert and Marilyn Smith of Chula Vista.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
