Mary Jane Rowe Hartley McKinney, 71, of Banner Elk, N.C. died Tuesday, September 14, 2004 in a Linville hospital.
A native of Banner Elk, she was the only child of the late Howard and Flossie Lane Rowe.
She was a 1951 graduate of Cranberry High School, 1953 graduate of Lees-McRae College, 1956 graduate from Catawba College, and received her Masters Degree in Supervision from Appalachian State University. She was a Social Worker for Avery County Department of Social Services, and a Day Care Specialist for the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. Mrs. McKinney was a member of the Banner Elk United Methodist Church, former Chapter President of National Association Education of Young Children, and a member of the National Organization of Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Brown McKinney.
Survivors include daughters, Jeannie Hartley Bolen, and her husband, Bruce, of Charleston, SC, Alison Hartley Thompson, and her husband, Russ, of San Diego, CA; son, Warren Hartley, and his wife, Lisa, of Banner Elk; step-son, Phil McKinney, and his wife, Beverly, of Lexington, NC; step-daughter, Karen McKinney of Jonas Ridge, NC; fourteen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Interment will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery.
