Emma Jefferson Childress was born on 1 January 1866 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.4 She was born on 4 January 1866 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6,3,4 She and John Dulaney DeVault were married on 14 October 1885.6 She died on 24 September 1944, at age 78, in Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6,4 She was buried in Paperville Cemetery, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.6

She resided in of Sullivan Co., Tennessee; Bristol, Bristol City Co., Virginia (1936.)7,8 She was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1880); Greene County, Tennessee (1900); Sullivan County, Tennessee (1930.) She was a Seamstress (1900.)5 Dorothy (DeVault) Bicknell has a note in her genealogy of Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania to the effect that Emma (Childress) DeVault was a granddaughter of Henry and Kitty DeVault. If Dorothy is talking about Henry and Kitty (Gross) Dawalt, I can find no evidence to substantiate this claim. Emma was the daughter of William and Lucinda (Davault) Childress. There is an article (Families and History of Sullivan County Tennessee, Volume I, 1779 - 1992, Article 759 - Elijah E. Davault) that states that the Lucinda Davault (later DeVault) that married William Childress is the grandaughter of Daniel Davault and Mary Ann Roller. This means that she is not a descendant of our Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania. William and Lucinda (DeVault) Childress are buried in the Paperville Cemetery next to Henry DeVault Childress and his wife. Henry and Emma were brother and sister.
