HOTELS
The Commercial hotel was built in 1869, and was first kept by John Carr, proprietor of the building. He kept it several years, and then let it to others. Since that time it has had a varied history. The present landlord, THOMAS DUNCAN, took the house in Aug., 1882, and it has met with its first success under his management. This success has been well deserved, as Mr. Duncan is a boniface who spares no pains to make his guests comfortable. He and his estimable family are a welcome addition to the city of White Hall. The house contains 20 sleeping rooms, besides the other appurtenances of a good hotel, and has a liberal patronage.

THOMAS DUNCAN, the present proprietor of the Commercial, was born at Jonesboro, Eastern Tenn., March 1, 1821. He is a son of James and Sarah (Hunt) Duncan, both natives of Tennessee. He lived with his parents until he had reached the age of 25, being engaged in farming with his father. In 1856 he moved to this state, and bought land near Girard, Macoupin County, where he was engaged in farming nine years. He then sold his farm, and engaged in the grocery business at Girard, in which enterprise he was engaged for 11 years. He then embarked in the hotel business in the same place, taking charge of the Enterprise hotel, which he conducted for about three years. From there he removed to White Hall, and took charge of the Commercial hotel. He was married, Aug. 7, 1856, to Elizabeth B. Kitzmiller, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Carr) Kitzmiller. They are the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living - Martha M., married to L. P. Smith, living at Palmyra, Macoupin county; Mary E., Sarah E., Ella B., Laura A., Katie J., Birdie Irene and Ethel V. All of these, with one exception, have been endowed with a marked talent for vocal music. The one deceased was an infant, not named. The family are devout members of the Baptist church, the young ladies being leading singers in the choir. Mr. Duncan is a man honest and upright in the fullest sense of the words. He is a republican, politically.

DaughterMary Elizabeth "Mollie" Kitzmiller (b. 25 February 1861, d. 10 February 1933)

BASIC FACTS

Abdiel Unkefer Kitzmiller was born on 8 June 1829 in Washington Co., Tennessee.5,1 He was born on 8 June 1829 in Carter Co., Tennessee.6 He and Mary Jane Taylor were married on 30 January 1855 in Carter Co., Tennessee.7,8 He died on 2 April 1862, at age 32, in Macoupin Co., Illinois.5 He was buried in Macoupin Co., Illinois.1
Abdiel Unkefer Kitzmiller was also known as A. U. Kitzmiller.9 He was also known as Abdial Kitzmiller.10 He had reference number 11285. He was an Educator, prominently known in that connection throughout Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee; school teacher (1860.)10,3 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Tennessee (1850); Gentry County, Missouri (1860.) Newland DeVault says that Abdiel was never married and moved with his father and stepmother to Macoupin County, Illinois. This is incorrect. Abdiel remained in Tennessee, marrying Mary Jane Taylor there on January 30, 1855. In the 1860 Census, Abdiel, Mary and three children are shown living in Gentry County, Missouri. They moved around some as their children were born in Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri. The family must have returned to Macoupin County, Illinois shortly after the 1860 Census was taken as Abdiel died there in 1862. After his death, Mary and her children returned to Tennessee where she eventually remarried. Abdiel's mother was Rebecca Duncan. Mary's mother was Nancy Duncan. There is some speculation that they were sisters, but I have seen no evidence of this. Further note: Larry W. Harrell, in his genealogy of the Global Harrell Family says that Rebecca and Nancy were sisters. This makes Abdiel Unkefer Kitzmiller and Mary Jane Taylor first cousins.

BASIC FACTS

Mary Honora Kitzmiller was born on 10 November 1833 in Washington Co., Tennessee.9,10,3 She and Jesse Winton May were married on 4 April 1852 in Washington Co., Tennessee.3,11 She died on 20 September 1924, at age 90, in Raymond, Montgomery Co., Illinois.3 She was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Raymond, Montgomery Co., Illinois.12
Mary Honora Kitzmiller had reference number 11287. She was enumerated on the census in Washington Co., Tennessee (1840, 1850); Macoupin County, Illinois (1860, 1870); Montgomery County, Missouri (1880); Lawrence County, Missouri (1900); Montgomery County, Illinois (1910, 1920.)3 She resided in Girard, Macoupin Co., Illinois (1859.)13 Newland says that Mary made the migration with her family to Macoupin County, Illinois. (She would have been seventeen years of age at the time.) He goes on to say that, after Mary's father died on July 1, 1854, she continued living with her step-mother, Elizabeth Christina (Davault) Kitzmiller, and was shown living with her stepmother's family in 1870 Census. Also, after her stepmother died, Mary stayed close to the family, moving to Bates County, Missouri with her half-sister, Margaret (Kitzmiller) Scott and two half-brothers about 1880. And finally, Newland says that Mary, still single, died in Bates County, Missouri in the '90s (or in her 90s).
It turns out that most of this is incorrect. Mary and brother Abdiel remained in Washington County, Tennessee when their father and stepmother moved to Macoupin County, Illinois. Both Mary and Abdiel married and started families in Tennessee. Then, about 1856, both Mary and her family and Abdiel and his family moved to Macoupin County, Illinois.

OBITUARY

GRANDMOTHER MAY PASSES AWAY
Mary Kitzmiller was born in Washington County, Tenn., Nov. 10, 1833, and passed out of this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Florence Bradley, in Raymond, Ill., Sept. 20, 1924, aged 90 years, 10 months and 10 days.
In infancy her mother was taken by death, and under the careful management of a devoted father she grew up to young womanhood days.
She was married to Jesse W. May on Apr. 4, 1852, and in 1859 the young husband and wife came to make their home in Illinois. They lived for some time at Girard and then came to Raymond, where Mr. May as a contractor and builder erected many of the buildings and homes in the little town just starting.
Mrs. May was the mother of six children, Marshall and Jesse Winton dying in infancy, and before some of the remaining four children had passed the teen-age Mr. May was taken by death, leaving a lonely hearted wife and mother. She saw her three daughters and one son married and settled in their own homes. The son, Millard F. May, died Nov. 10, 1899.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Mollie Wood, of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Mrs. Dora Steel, of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Florence Bradley of Raymond, Ill., with whom Mrs. May has made her home for many years. She also leaves five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A posterity of which any parent might well be proud. Her children and grandchildren have made good in life. The great grandchildren are among the brightest and most talented young students in the schools which they are now attending. The grandchildren who have lived there are well known to the people of this community. Mrs. S. B. Bentley possess a rare musical ability, has rendered a beautiful service in our town, and is now greatly missed by her recent removal to Taylorville. The twin grandsons, Ed and Fred Bradley, live with their families at Virden.
Mrs. May was a member of the Christian church from early womanhood. Her husband and his partner, Orman White, built the Christian church in Raymond and were elders for many years.
The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Florence Bradley, in Raymond, conducted by Miss Lou Watson, whom Mrs. May had engaged for this service since Miss Watson held a two years pastorate in the church here in 1909 and 1910. Burial was made in the family lot in Asbury cemetery.
The large number of friends and neighbors in attendance bespeak the high esteem in which Grandmother May and her family are held.
