BASIC FACTS
Henry Carr Kitzmiller was born on 24 February 1835 in Washington Co., Tennessee.1,2 He and Annis Amie "Anna" Cox were married on 5 October 1856.2 He died on 3 June 1914, at age 79, in Fordtown, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.1 He was buried in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, near Fordtown, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.2 Henry Carr Kitzmiller had reference number 5490. Civil War, Confederate Army, 5th Tennessee Brigade, 3rd Maryland Artillery.5 He was a Farmer (1860.)3 He was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1850, 1860.) Portions from a history of "The 3rd Artillery, CSA"
Henry Carr Kitzmiller enrolled as a Private in the 3rd Maryland Artillery, CSA (aka Ritter's Battery) on 20 April 1862 at Jonesborough, Washington County, Tennessee. In May, Henry and 24 fellow Tennessee recruits marched as a unit to Clinton Tennessee.
In June the battery was back to Chattanooga, then to Morristown, Loudon and Blain's Cross Roads, where 50 Georgians joined the battery. Then back to Tazewell in east Tennessee, where, as a part of General Reynolds' brigade, the battery helped push Federal troops back to Cumberland Gap. For several days Reynolds engaged Federal troops around the Gap. On the 23rd General Kirby Smith ordered Reynolds to join him in Kentucky.
The battery marched to Richmond, Lexington and finally Covington, opposite Cincinnati, Ohio. The move by Smith was a feint to draw troops away from Louisville, General Braxton Bragg's objective. The battery moved with the army from point to point through September. On October 4th the battery was to provide a 14 gun salute during the inauguration of Governor Hawes (the Confederate Military Governor), but Frankfort was threatened by a large Federal force on the 3rd and abandoned. Smith retired to Harrodsburg. After the Battle of Perryville, Bragg retired to Tennessee, the 3rd Maryland returned to Knoxville, serving in the army's rear guard during the retreat.
In January the battery was sent to Vicksburg, and again split up. On the 23rd three guns were sent down river to Warrenton. A crew was placed on the "Archer" and sent down river a few days later. On the 30th a detachment was sent up river to General Ferguson's command at Deer Creek. On the 27th the crew on the Archer fired with effect on the DeSoto, a Confederate ship captured by the Federals. In February the Federal Ram "Queen of the West" was captured and the crew on the Archer was transferred to her. On the 24th the "Queen" the "Webb" and the "Grand Era" sailed up river and captured the formidable "Indianola." During the action the "Queen" came alongside the "Indianola" and the Maryland crew fired point blank into the Federal ship while exposed to point blank fire from the Federal crew. On April 14th the "Queen" was sunk at Grand Lake, Louisiana. Nine of the 13 man crew were killed, drowned, or captured.
Captain Latrobe left the service in March. Lt. Claiborne was promoted to Captain, and Orderly Sergeant William Ritter to Junior 2nd Lt. On the 21st he was promoted again to Senior 2nd Lt.
During the siege of Vicksburg several men were wounded and two killed, including Claiborne. Lt. Rowan replaced Claiborne, and Ritter was promoted to Senior 1st Lt. When Vicksburg fell, 3 officers, 70 men, 5 guns and 135 horses and mules of the 3rd Maryland fell into Federal hands. Henry Carr Kitzmiller was one of those captured on 4 July 1863.
Henry was paroled after signing an oath not to bear arms again. He returned to his unit on 26 July 1863 and was furloughed. Later he was reported as a deserter on the company muster roll.

Tennessee.6 She was buried in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, near Fordtown, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.2 Annis Amie "Anna" Cox had reference number 5494. She was a Manager - general farming (1920.)3 She was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1860, 1920.) Annis's parents were John Jeremiah Cox and Eleanor Amanda King. Eleanor seems to have gone by Ellen or Amanda. John Jeremiah Cox died in 1844. He is buried in the Cox Cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee. Amanda soon married Jacob Cox. In the 1850 Census, Annis is listed with the family of Jacob and Ellen Cox. She is listed out of birth order suggesting that she was Jacob's step-daughter. On her death certificate, Annis' parents are given as John J. Cox and Matilda Cox. The informant was George Washington Hawk, husband of Annis' daughter Florence. Florence was George's third wife. He did not marry Florence until fifteen years after Annis' mother had died. I think he can be forgiven for getting the name of his wife's long-disceased maternal grandmother wrong.

1860 - 1922. Marriage and census records suggest that Mary Jane White was only eleven or twelve years old when she married Martin Kitzmiller. There is a possibility that our Mary Jane White was the daughter of Alsup White and Nancy Elizabeth Nuchols. In that case she was born in 1864 and that would be a more reasonable birth date for a marriage in 1881.

She is listed as a servant.
Family information from the research of Mary Bowery Carter. (Ref - Elizabeth S. Collins, Jennifer Kitzmiller Olinger, Estelle Coffman, Fred & Sarah Kitzmiller, W. M. Hawk and Elizabeth Corum)
The Hawk Family log house is located on approximately one and one half acres in the 12th District on Ford Creek Road.
Mrs. Lemons lives in the house now, with her son and grandson. She has lived there since 1962. She and her husband bought the house in 1973 from the Hawk family heirs. (Her husband has since passed away.)
The house was built (or re-assembled) from the logs of the house George W. Hawk was given in payment of a debt owed to him by Jack Irwin. The logs are all hand hewn. This house was assembled in early 1900.
Florence Hawk, the bride of George Hawk, had saved $65 from work she had done, and this money was used in the construction of the home. (This information provided by Elizabeth Hawk Corum, the youngest daughter of George and Florence Hawk.)
In the most recent visit to the Hawk house, Mrs. Lemons told us of a mural of the house which is on the cafeteria wall at Daniel Boone High School, near Gray, Tennessee. The mural was done by a student, and both Charles and I were able to view it.
Note: Directions to the Hawk house: Take Johnson City Highway 36 towards Johnson City, turn right on Profitt lane and follow it to the end. Turn left on Old Fordtown Road. It's just a short way to Ford Creek Road and the Hawk house. If you turn right on Old Fordtown Road, you will come upon the Fordtown Baptist Church and Cemetery where George W. Hawk and others are buried.
