Robert L. Smith, 79, of Carrollton, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Texas from complications of cancer. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Survivors include his wife, Jerletta, and a son, Larry, of Hanover Park, Ill.
Also surviving are two grandsons, William and wife Teresa of Friendswood, Texas, and their children, Alex and Rachel; and Michael and wife Lina of Sweden.
Born to Mahlon and Goldie Smith on July 18, 1920, in Center Junction, Iowa, he grew up and attended school in Cedar Rapids. He married Jerletta Tubbs of Maquoketa on Feb. 16, 1941, and began his lifetime career in sales, retiring in 1983 after 27 years of employment with King-Seely Thermos. For the past 29 years Robert and his wife had made their home in the Dallas area.
Mr. Smith will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty to family and friends, and his wit. He loved good music, particularly jazz, having played trumpet with various bands in the 1930s and '40s. He had a passion for auto racing, which he closely followed, and also enjoyed golf, spending many happy hours playing the game. He was an avid reader and especially liked adventure, mystery and suspense novels.
He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
