Mary Jane (Taylor) Kitzmiller taught the first school at Cedar Hill, Tennessee (Now Milligan College). After their marriage, she and Abdiel moved to Missouri and, sometime after their last child was born, moved to Macoupin County, Illinois where Abdiel's parents lived. Abdiel died there in 1862. Later, after the Civil War, Mary Jane returned to Cedar Hill, Carter County, Tennessee where she and her three children lived, for a time, with her father. There she taught in the old log church house, known as the Buffalo Christian Church. This school, or schools taught by Mary Jane (Taylor) Kitzmiller can be truthfully said to be the embryo of Buffalo Institute that later grew into Milligan College. In 1873, Mary Jane married Samuel H. Millard, D.D. Below is the biography of her second husband. It contains much information on Mary Jane's first marriage. (Some of the above information comes from the notes of Larry W. Harrell.)

SAMUEL H. MILLARD, D. D.
On the 26th of October, 1873, was celebrated the marriage of Samuel H. Millard to Mrs. Mary J. (Taylor) Kitzmiller. His death occurred on the 10th of October, 1886, at the advanced age of ninety-one years. Mrs. Taylor died in 1844, in her forty-fifth year. Abdiel's mother was Rebecca Duncan. Mary's mother was Nancy Duncan. There is some speculation that they were sisters, but I have seen no evidence of this. Further note: Larry W. Harrell, in his genealogy of the Global Harrell Family says that Rebecca and Nancy were sisters. This makes Abdiel Unkefer Kitzmiller and Mary Jane Taylor first cousins.
