Little York Farmer Drowns In Spring …..
Omer Anderson Meets Tragic Death While Cleaning Out …..
Spring At Farm;
Omer Anderson, 63, prominent Little York farmer, met tragic death by drowning Monday afternoon. His body was found, head downward, in the spring near a stock tank on his farm by two neighbors summoned by Mrs. Anderson when her husband failed to return to the house at chore time.
Clarence Gross and Bert Thompson discovered the tragedy about 6:45 p.m. Monday evening. Mr. Anderson’s head and shoulders were submerged in the water and mud in the bottom of the spring.
Death probably occurred about 1 p.m. according to Coroner Frank Newkirk, who pronounced the cause as accidental suffocation and drowning.
Mr. Anderson had talked with Mr. Thompson Monday afternoon and said he thought he would clean out the spring which furnished water for his stock. The spring is in the bottom of a well-like opening, with a pipe loading from it to the stock tank.
He has apparently dipped most of the water and mud from the spring and was attempting to clean out the pipe with a piece of wire when he slipped into the mud and water at the bottom.
Mrs. Anderson began looking for her husband when he failed to return to the house towards evening. Seeing his horses she thought perhaps he had gone on into the fields until she noted the dog had returned to the house. Becoming alarmed she called her neighbors and Mr. Thompson and Mr. Gross went to the spring.
Mr. Anderson had resided in the Little York community for the past five years. Before that time he lived in the Hickory Grove community in Franklin Township. He was a lifelong resident of the county.
He was born August 9, 1886 to William F. and Malinda Floyd Anderson. He was married to Lula Tash, daughter of Benton and Elva Tash.

A life has been lived, not long but well. You will miss his handclasp, his smile and words of encouragement. But you will always bare the memory of a life well lived.
You have the memory of an unselfish life, devoted to duty and those he loved. He returns no more at evening with the dust of honest toil on his shoulders, to greet his family and friends. But to you, you have the rich heritage of the memory of his life of devotion. This shall be your consolation and comfort in this darkest hour. He says to you always, “Carry on! For that is what I want you to do.” His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, “This was a man.”

Simon Spurgeon Dies At Age 70
“The Hoosier Schoolmaster”
Simon Spurgeon, 70, widely known in this area as “The Hoosier Schoolmaster” died suddenly at 2:30 p.m., last Wednesday while visiting at the home of a brother-in-law in Salem.
He was born on July 23, 1897, in Washington County, son of the late Jesse and Mary Morris Spurgeon.
He received his education at Hanover College and Indiana University.
After completing his education he taught school for several years in Salem and Washington County Schools, establishing himself as a big favorite of students and parents alike. His philosophical outlook and cheerful disposition were the main reasons behind his popularity.
His nickname “The Hoosier Schoolmaster” came from the radio program by that name which he narrated as an employee of the local station fifteen years ago.
A flawless character, clear and concise voice, stern face with rimless glasses framing twinkling eyes and his slightly-stooped walk alone made him the epitome of the conception of a rural schoolmaster.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Effie Terrell Spurgeon, a stepson; Lendall Terrell of Dania, Florida, a step-daughter; Lalah Yarbrough of Hollywood, Florida, and three step-grandchildren.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the Hollis Funeral Home in Salem, with burial in the Winslow Cemetery. Bro. Arthur Walton officiated.
